Only one new movie opened this weekend and it was the Martin Scorsese/Leonardo DiCaprio thriller Shutter Island which took the number one spot with $40.2 million! If it holds strong in the coming weeks, it shouldn't be a problem to reach and exceed it's $80 million production budget.

Last week's number one movie Valentine's Day fell 69% to take the second place spot with $17.1 million and a $87.4 million total.

Bouncing back up one spot to third was Avatar which in week 10 took in another $16.1 million and has pushed it's total now to $687.4 million. It's worldwide total is up to $2,462,821,000.

Coming in fourth place was Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief which made $15.3 million and a $58.7 million total.

And rounding out the top 5 is The Wolfman with $9.8 million and a $50.3 million total.

Out of the top 12 this weekend was only The Blind Side (13th) which leaves having made $1.5 million this weekend and having had a fantastic run with a total now at $247.1 million.

Opening next weekend are two new movies. First up is the comedy Cop Out (http://www.comingsoon.net/films.php?id=53253) (rated R) starring Bruce Willis, Tracy Morgan, Adam Brody, Kevin Pollak, Guillermo Diaz, Seann William Scott, Jason Lee, and Ana de la Reguera.

And the other new film of the weekend is the remake to the George Romero film The Crazies (http://www.comingsoon.net/films.php?id=44676) (rated R) with Timothy Olyphant, Radha Mitchell, Danielle Panabaker, and Joe Anderson.

I guess Paramount's decision to delay the movie for 4 months wasn't that dumb after all.

Coming in fourth place was Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief which made $15.3 million and a $58.7 million total.

The sequel still in limbo.

And directed by, wait for it, Kevin Smith, who after the failure of Jersey Girl is taking another risk by leaving his comfort zone.

Titanic was 800 what after inflation adjustment?

Just curious. It'll definitely beat 700, but 800 will be extremely difficult.

Man, you just can't keep Avatar down.

Let's see it stay up like this when it's forced to relinquish its 3-D screens to Alice in Wonderland...

It's nice to see Shutter Island on top. Good marketing campaign to a well done psychological thriller.

Also, if we're gonna talk about inflation-adjusted box office returns, I think Gone With the Wind is pretty untouchable.

Also, if we're gonna talk about inflation-adjusted box office returns, I think Gone With the Wind is pretty untouchable.

That's only counting the many re-releases, though. Avatar's already sold more tickets that Gone With the Wind's initial run.

Currently Avatar has the 15th highest adjusted box office overall and the 7th among films that haven't benefited from multiple releases. The 6 films ahead of it are The Sound of Music, The Ten Commandments, Titanic, Jaws, Doctor Zhivago, and Ben-Hur.
