View Full Version : They should do Matt Wagner's "Trinity" as a Brave and the Bold DtDVD

So everyone's worried that Brave and the Bold might end at 52 episodes, and that both Superman and Wonder Woman will have never "properly" appeared due to legal reasons.
But if they did a Brave and the Bold direct to DVD movie, those legal barriers will be side stepped. And how perfect in style and in story would it be if they did the story of Matt Wagner's "Trinity" as the plot for a Brave and the Bold DVD movie?
BatB already established an awesome Ras Al Ghul, and there's no Superman or Wonder Woman continuity to contradict. AND they could even throw in a comical "first time meeting" between Batman and Aquaman. It'd be the perfect finale to Brave and the Bold, IMO.

I'd love to see a DTV for BatB but I don't see it happening. DC seems to think shows for kids and DTVs for a mature audiences. Counting that they are releasing three DTVs per year they could easily have one of those be based on the current incarnation of a cartoon like BatB; I don't see it happening sadly though. I'm guessing the last few DTVs didn't sell too well or to their expectations (The Batman Vs Dracula, Teen Titans Trouble in Tokyo, Superman: Braniac Attacks, Batman Mystery of the Batwoman). The Batman's second DTV about Hush was cancelled sadly...JLU Worlds Collide was changed to remove the DCAU designs and released as crisis on two earths unrelated to the show.
BTW any legal restrictions are probably still there even for DTVs. Which are dumb, if we get a third season though maybe they can finally get to use some characters they weren't able to use before like Superman/WW, it happened in Teen Titans and The batman. Our best hope is for BatB to have good DVD sales for it to be considered and the toyline which I think is not doing too hot.

The benefit BatB has is that it's still on the air. Trouble in Tokyo, Mystery of the Batwoman, Brainiac Attacks, and even World's Collide were all trading on the popularity of shows that had already ended. Only "Batman versus Dracula" was done within the lifespan of it's show, and i'm pretty sure that got excellent reviews all around. (Don't know what it's actual sales were, but it's generally well liked by fans)
As for the Wonder Woman and Superman right issues, both of those have to do with "broadcast" rights, but not direct to video rights. If both Wonder Woman and Superman can appear in "Crisis on two Earths" then they can just as easily appear in a trinity movie under the "Brave and the Bold" banner.
And anyway Wonder Woman's rights issues only have to do with the rule that she has to be in a starring role in anything she's in. So while she wouldn't be a main character in the "Brave and the Bold" tv show, she COULD be a main character in a "Brave and the Bold" movie.

I think you've really got something going there theRedDeath. I haven't read all of Trinity but if the rest of it was anything approaching how good his Rising Moon duology was then I'm all for it.
Of course the BTBATB style would kick in as well, but I think it weould work very well to have the trinity together.

If they were going to adapt Matt Wagner's Trinity as a DTV, I'd rather that they do it as a DTV animated in Matt Wagner's style, and/or do a Big Wow Finish of The Brave and the Bold with Superman and Wonder Woman guest starring. Not that I wouldn't like to see either one, but I think the fundamentally serious tone of Trinity is entirely wrong for the more lighthearted Batman: The Brave and the Bold. By the time you shoehorn one into the other, you'll have lost most of what makes them both enjoyable in the first place. It seems like a unnecessarily complex solution to a problem that would be better handled by the Brave and the Bold crew coming up with their own story to match up the big 3 from DC.
I would definitely like to see something by Matt Wagner getting the DTV treatment, though. I love his art style and I love most of his work. I'd totally dig it if someone did an anthology film series of his Grendel comics by handing individual stories to a bunch of wildly different animators and saying, "Go nuts," but that's not DC so it kind of doesn't count.
James Tucker's also pointed out (http://www.toonzone.net/news/articles/25155/toon-zones-brave-amp-the-bold-james-tucker-michael-jelenic-amp-linda-m.-steiner) that there's probably precedent for Superman not showing up since he never appeared in the comic book until the very last issue before its reboot.

Brave and the Bold is a clearly a Batman vehicle, and the guest stars are kind of gravy if anything. You still watch for Batman, and the heroes just give it flavor to make it stand out from previous Batman TV serials.
On the other hand, Trinity was supposed to be a marquee feature for all three characters. In reality, it didn't work into a 1:1:1 story (WW comes across as a little naive and weak, and Batman's biggest role seemed to be having his villain be the mastermind). I haven't watched much of BatB but I guess I just don't immediately think of Trinity as a potential storyline.
For a comparison, I thought Loeb's Superman/Batman run was clearly a Superman book featuring Batman, though that's not to say Batman didn't have his moments. When Public Enemies came out on DTV, they made a few changes to make Batman have a more important role in the story, and in the end the movie felt different. I'm not going to claim that Wagner's Trinity is above editing and modification, but I'm not certain it was written in the same spirit of Trinity which tried to give each hero the focus per issue.
But most of all, the tone of the two just don't really compare all that well. It's one thing to make a BatB story guest starring Supes and Wondy, but making an adaptation of Trinity? I feel a lot would be lost (and gained), if they really wanted to make a specific adaptation a separate DTV would be a better route IMO.
