Why hasnt there ever been a cartoon based on agirl superhero? i mean im not a girl and i would be interested in it. So many good characters out there even maybe a Harle Quinn animated series would rule.... just something i was wondering cause i got bored.

A Supergirl series was considered by Timm and Co. But it never eventuated...you can always watch the Gotham Girls online...but that's not nothing to get too excited about.

Hehe -- that would be a interesting series. In this perspective, we could see Harley Quinn as more of the main character and Batman as the villain.

Raven would also be a good series or Black Canary or Huntress... Aquagirl would probably be made into a friggin Little Mermaid series :P

I dunno - the only female DC superhero that has the chance of supporting her own series would be Wonder Woman - but even that is pushing it. I admit, I don't know THAT much about Wonder Woman, personally, but I've been led to understand that compared to Batman and even Superman, her supporting cast isn't nearly as fleshed out.

There was the idea of a CATWOMAN series, too, but that fell by the wayside. What are the chances the WB or FOX or whatever would run a children's program that places a villain in the shoes of a hero?

I'm not against the idea of an animated series putting a woman in the lead role, but I don't think that we're "ready" for that. From my experience, most people seem to look at these sorts of things as filling in a sort of "quota" - ie, "We need Batgirl in more of the new Batman episodes, because the producers say we need to represent women better and sell more action figures". And on top of that, we'd get results like the HARLEY QUINN comic series (gag me with a spoon), episodes like GIRLS NIGHT OUT (ugh), and GOTHAM GIRLS (light, fluffy fun, but hardly the stuff that an animated series should be based on).

The Wonder Woman idea could easily be developed into something greater. In the meantime, however, I'll be happy with the odd story that prominently features a woman; those are usually good enough for me. :-)

I honestly don't think Wonder Woman or Harley Quinn could carry their own series. It would probably be good, but no woman hero out there has the popularity or drawing power of Superman, Batman, etc. And ratings are what counts.

For the record though, I would love to see an animated adaptation of Birds of Prey.

well Static, Zeta and Batman Beyond had no popularity they were just made up..

A Harley Quinn toon? You've not read the comic have you?

I think Harley Quinn could work! After all, since many superhero comics are bizarre, why not have a bizarre twist on bizarreness?

The reason Harley Quinn comics are'nt that good is that Harley only really works in the animated world. Her antics and personality are destroyed in the mainstream, but that does'nt mean that a Harley Quinn cartoon series would be bad also. ;)

It doesn't neccessarily have to be an existing female member of the DC animated universe. They could always make a new character off from scratch.

Not entirely unheard of (i.e Bats Beyond, Zeta, Static Shock)

I just think it should be pointed out that Batman Beyond isn't really from scratch, it's like a spin-off. You have many characters from the original series appearing in some capacity-Bruce Wayne, Barb Gordon, Mr. Freeze, Superman, Green Lantern, Tailia, Ra's al Ghul, Two-Face, Riddler, Killer Croc, Harley, Robin, The Joker/Jokerz. It took an idea that already existed and made expanded on it, it wasn't completely made up.

Oh and I would be skeptical of a female lead DC toon. If let's say Supergirl got her own show it would still probably rely on Superman's villains and occasional appearances by Supes himself. A female hero show would be nice to have, but I think a few Wonder Woman/Hawkgirl focused episodes of JL will be the most you'll see for awhile.

Howdy all,

If Paul Dini's Zatanna miniseries is good, I wouldn't mind if he and some of the old crew at WB Animation took a crack at a weekly TV series for her, focusing on the mystical aspects of the DCU. Some enterprising graphics programmer also needs to figure out a way to overlay fishnet stockings over traditional hand-drawn animation, so she could have her proper stage outfit =8^).

I have to completely disagree that Wonder Woman couldn't carry her own series, and point to the 70's Wonder Woman with Lynda Carter as evidence. Admittedly, that series took a lighter approach to superheroics, but it still managed to capture the essence of the character. Whether or not the current WW voice actress can pull it off is debatable, but she's getting better.

I also think they're doing a spectacular job with Hawkgirl on Justice League, and Maria Canals is terrific as Shayera Thal. She could totally carry her own series.

There are a lot of reasons for this. Classically, comics have always been written for boys and men. If any females were introduced, they were usually watered down versions of male counterparts. To add insult to injury, until recently they were given the "girl" label instead of "woman" or a unique name.

Batgirl, Supergirl... only the villians got a "woman" tacked on to the name and only because they were not female versions of already existing villians.

Wonder Woman was a good start and was the logical choice for her own series. I think when male writers and animators stop thinking of "girls in skimpy costumes" and start thinking about real heroic women, Chibi will get his wish... along with lots of women.

Sorry, but there's no possible way for a Harley Quinn series to work. I understand that you all love her and would love to see more of her, but honestly, without Joker, she's not really an incredible character. Joker, without Batman, is not an incredible character. The only way I like seeing Harley Quinn is as Joker's sidekick, fighting against Batman.

And don't argue that she has her own comic book series, because it's awful. I'm sorry for the fans of Harley, (and there are probably a lot more fans of Harley Quinn than Starman, who would make an infinitely richer animated series,) but once you remove her from Joker and the Bat-universe, she's not all that compelling a character.

I love "Harley Quinn" (yes the comic book!) In what ways is it so bad??? I can see the lightheartedness not being your cup of tea if you're attached to the more serious detectivey gotham stories, but other than that Harley is just a fun filled romp through the eyes of a psychotic clown girl. I especially love the recent story arc that takes place in metropolis and spoofs the entire superman universe! And I must say, GL, that I enjoy her more without Joker. It's not that I dont love her with Joker, but Joker always overshadows everyone and the only way for her to be developed is out of that shadow. THe best Harley episode by far was "Harley's Holiday" and there wasnt a bit of Joker in it. I see her series as one big "Harley's Holiday." Joker's important to her origin and all but he's not necessary to tell humorous interesting Harley stories.

I dont know if she could hold her own in an animated show totally revolving around her, but if its presented in the same way the comic is then I know I'd watch it.

I guess the most likely candidate for a female starring in her own show would be Wondy... but id rather see Zattana. Actually I'd rather see the best character get a show first regardless of gender... which means that Nightwing, Aquaman, Flash, GL, Dr. Fate, etc, are just plain cooler than any of those girls and would probably have a better show built around them.

When is Zatanna having a mini-series? And Two-Face was in BB? If its in ROTJ, I haven't seen it, so don't tell me please. Sorry, thats off topic. But anyways, Birds of Prey is getting its own live action series, or at least a pilot. That should be cool

BOP animated could be so beyond cool ^-^. I think a reason why a female hero series wouldn't work is because most of the girls/women are paired up with men. Batgirl is with Batman, Robin and Nightwing, Supergirl is with Superman, Harley and the Joker. They can't carry a series by themselves because they aren't normally by themselves. Batman and Superman are the ones we always see doing things solo. Wonder Woman could work because she's never been paired with a guy, she's always number one, out on her own. But, as someone said earlier, the rest of the cast would be too weak to keep the series going for long.

Personally, I think if an animated show is going to star a woman, it better co-star some demons and monsters with lots and lots of tentacles.

Ooh, that was bad. :O

Howdy all,

Looking back on my message, I can see how folks could get confused by my statements. The Zatanna mini-series I was referring to is a comic book, not a TV show, and is due out in the fall of this year, I believe. Penned by Paul Dini of BTAS fame, who also wrote the "Zatanna" episode of BTAS (which, IMO, was good, but not as insanely great as I had hoped).
