View Full Version : The Fancy Anvils

This special was kind of disappointing. Not nearly as funny as last year's Big Game special. Not surprisingly, Cartoon Cartoons won almost everything. A Dexter Lab cartoon won "BEST CARTOON" over "What's Opera, Doc?" and "I Love to Singa" (to quote the perplexed dog from "Cheese Chasers": IT DON'T ADD UP!).

Highlights: The 30 second "dance" montage of clips from B&W Harman & Ising Merrie Melodies. The nice tribute to Hanna, Noble, and Jones.

It repeats tomorrow afternoon, I think.

I was particularly peeved to see a second rate Dexter-Mandark cartoon (they could have at least nominated a better one that that) win over Sam's performance in Ballot Box Bunny! Come on, Sam is practially perfect in Ballot Box Bunny!

Jon, I believe that, like the rumors over the years about the Golden Globe Awards, the Fancy Anvil Awards are fixed (Even if Dexter was more justified in winning than Pia Zadora was for "Butterfly" back in 1982). Wouldn't surprise me at all to find out those Russian and French judges from the Olympic pairs figure skating competition were involved with this one as well...

To say the least, the special sucked. CLASSIC CARTOONS AND MODERN CARTOONS ARE SEPARATE, CARTOON NETWORK! SEPARATE!

The point was the award was "WORST Villain".

Sam wasn't technically a villain in that toon..

What confuses me is why is Mandark in the category of best villian anyways? He's Dexter's rival. That not exactly a "villian".

Really sucks that Daffy lost.

I don't think it was fixed at all. There probably aren't enough classic cartoon fans to swing the vote. :(

Classic cartoons really got ripped off! I'm almost surprised ANY classic won... one, that is.

Funniest part for me: the Flintstones presenters. Just looking at the 4 of them up there alone were LOL.

They didn't "play Scooby Doo off the stage" fast enough! :D
An "Oh, brudder!" from Bugs during the "tribute" would've been nice.

It didn't thrill me all that much. I thought the Flintstones scene was funny, also the Foghorn/Chicken scene and the black and white cartoon dance. I also thought the tribute to Hanna, Noble, and Jones was very heartfelt and very good. They used clips from a series of interviews CN did a couple of years back, with Porky Pig (albeit badly drawn) introducing it. The rest of it, though...don't waste your time.

Okay, I'll take that back. The show didn't suck 100%, because of the parts everyone else mentioned. So maybe about 70% of it sucked...:p

I think all of this was meant to parody the Oscars.

They nominated second-rate cartoons like Knighty Knight Bugs over What's Opera Doc?, so why not put two totally different genres together?

<<It sucked that Daffy lost>>

I agree. He should have won!

I guess this wasn't the best progam. I would have liked to see more "Looney Tunes" or "Tom & Jerry" rather than all those new toons. But I did like some parts. Specifically Captain Whatshisname making fun of Elmer Fudd. When he told him his "l"s and "r"s sound like "w"s, then Elmer responds, "Weally? That must be why I'm a wegend!" And I liked that tribute to S----- D-- with all the guest stars, but I won't get into that because I'm the only person here who likes that show and I don't want to argue. Oh, and it was nice that Porky did a tribute to the animators who have passed away this year, especially Chuck Jones. So, what I'm trying to say was it wasn't too bad, but I agree I could have been better.

That was obvious.

Knighty Knight Bugs was nominated? What's Opera, Doc wasn't? I think it was the other way around on the online voting.

He means the real-life Oscars. Knighty Knight Bugs won the Oscar for best cartoon in 1958, What's Opera Doc? was never nominated (it would have been in the 1957 Oscars, BTW). I would have liked to see The Three Little Bops win that year, such a fun cartoon.

Well, then why did you do it? I think he was just parodying Cpt. Linger's constant lingering.

And just to let you know, we like to do stuff like that and have fun on this board, which is why it's the most visited board on Toon Zone! :D

I don't mind that they aired an Ed, Edd and Eddy cartoon, a Powerpuff cartoon and a Looney Tune in their entireties. What got to me was airing THREE Dexter's Lab cartoons during the special. The whole thing just came off as a clever way to glorify the Cartoon Cartoons.

OH MY GOD, DID THIS SPECIAL SUCKED BIG TIME

This special was a shamless two hour promotion for their home made "CRAP" cartoons as I was totally digusted with this special from start to finish.I mean a Powerpuff Girls (for best cartoon) is better than "What's Opera Doc" ?????? what in the hell are these people thinking over at CN and Mandar a better villian than Sam from "Ballot Box Bunny"?

Boy Cartoon Network, you guys BETTER get you facts straight if you decide to another awards show for next year....

I never got a chance to see this special.
I heard how bad it is and I'm glad that I missed it.
But, who won the awards?

Can someone fill me in on that?
Thanks!

I merged this thread into the other "Fancy Anvil" thread.

The Winners were:

BEST FEMALE: Bubbles from THE POWERPUFF GIRLS
BEST VILLAIN: Mandrak from DEXTER'S LAB
BEST MALE: Dexter from DEXTER'S LAB
BEST TEAM: Ed, Edd, & Eddy
BEST SONG: "Rabbit of Seville"
BEST CARTOON: "Mock V" from DEXTER'S LAB

Well, AT LEAST the classics had more of a chance to win in the Best Song category (and one did win).

It just makes me mad that no other classics won in the other categories...

I don't think any of the other winners were worthy of winning.

What really annoys me is that "Dexter's Lab" had to win 3 times. That's half of the categories!

Well, I'm sure most of the voting was done by kids, who have their own opinions on whether Dexter is better than Bugs. Personally, I'm satisfied that just one classic cartoon got in there. Plus we were fortunate to see some of the classic LT characters, the excellent tributes to Hanna, Noble & Jones, and the Merrie Melodies dance. Just be glad that it wasn't 100% Cartoon Cartoons and Scooby.

I really enjoyed it but it wasn't as good as BG.I DID expect classic cartoons to get shut out though...........sirry :(

I voted for Goober myself! :D

I like Dexter's Lab, but it doesn't hardly compare to the quality of the classic toons. I can't understand why the kids prefer this new stuff.
