View Full Version : Cartoons that are pointlessly edited

Okay. Blackface gags, suicide jokes, extreme violence, or racist remarks I can see being edited. but CN could easily restore some edits that really don't need to exist anymore. I'll run through a list (and remember, I'm beiong fair here, I'm thinking like a censor.)

"Gift Wrapped"
what could be considered the funniest scene in this entire cartoon is now edited on CN. Sylvester finds an Indian costume and archery kit in the presents, and uses it to hunt Tweety. However, the scene is certainly not offensive, since no Native Americans appear. And what really bugged me today was that CN aired the clip toon "Tweet Dreams", with the entire scene left in. Even if Warner won't send a new copy, can they not just replace it using "Tweet Dreams"'s footage?

"Claws for Alarm"
This cartoon used to air with only a minor cut, but over about 3 years it has been losing more and more footage, and is now time-compressed. In short, this is a mess. It's not just lightly sped up, tolerable anyway, but RUINED, like "Dough For the DoDo". I think CN did most of these cuts, and why shouldn't they fix them now? The gags here are no more violent than Tom and Jerry or Wile E. Coyote, in fact less so because nothing bad ACTUALLY HAPPENS to Porky or Sylvester. Besides, the noose-and-razor gag is the funniest part of the picture!

"Daffy's Inn Trouble"
This cartoon is fine, except for the little gun gag. There is a scene that has Daffy trying to show off with a gun, and it ends up blasting his face. Now, this is TAME compared to some of the nasty things that happen to Tom Cat (TNT, beheadings, mousetraps, guns, mallets, irons, ironing boards, sharp objects, bowling balls) and similar gags show up in other LT cartoons (take, for example, Wild and Woolly Hare, in which Bugs and Sam actually shoot EACH OTHER in the face.) Besides, Daffy's gun mishap only lasts a few seconds.

"Drip Along Daffy"
Okay. We all know this one, the most ridiculous edit I have ever seen in a cartoon. 'Twould be different on any other cartoon, but the folks at Warner who did this should know better than to do this, particularly to such a popular Chuck Jones laugh riot like this.

"Baby Bottleneck"
They show the drunk stork uncut on the Bob Clampett Show, plus all those cartoons that have people getting drunk, like "Wise Quacks", "I Wanna Play House", "Mouse on 57th Street", "to name but a few, they're 0n all the time. Why edit it elsewhere?

How 'bout the asinine edits to ROMAN LEGION HARE, THE HASTY HARE, and HARE SPLITTER?

Was there something taken out of "Tweet Dreams" between the end of the clip from "Tweety's Circus" and Sylvester's introduction to the clip from "Gift Wrapped"?

I have a few in mind:

1) "The Midnight Snack" (1941) - all of Mammy's scenes have been edited out. This cartoon now makes no sense whatsoever. Why bother showing it at all?

2) "Cross Country Detours" (1940) - the scene with the frog "croaking" has been excised, but the stuff leading up to the punchline remains. How inane is that?!?

3) "Wild & Woolly Hare" (1959) - the whole scene with Injun Joe (who isn't even dressed like an Indian) is missing, leaving out a great gag with the old guy drinking Injun Joe's beer after being shot by Sam ('Yep, I get more free beer thisaway!'). I don't think the scene is offensive.

4) "Daffy's Inn Trouble" (1961) - besides being time-compressed, the scene with Daffy accidentally shooting himself and leaving in a cloud of gunsmoke is cut. Why? They'll show him shooting himself in "My Little Duckaroo" but not in this short. How strange!

5) "Trap Happy Porky" (1945) - the opening establishing scene at "Uncle Tom's Cabins - Boarders taken for all they got!" Like kids really know who the heck Uncle Tom was! Gimme a break!

6) "The Mouse Comes To Dinner" (1945) - the whole opening scene with Mammy singing while setting the table and Jerry hiding amongst the linen napkins as though they were teepees is gone. The cartoon begins after Mammy leaves the dining room and Tom pops out of a potted plant. Just plain stupid! Mammy doesn;t even sound like Mammy! How can that be ofensive to anyone?!?

How about the cut in "Flirty Birdy"? The scene where Tom looking like an Indian chief after his encounter with the laundry only lasts a couple seconds. However, since this is removed we also lose Tom getting the idea to disguise himself as a female bird. Which one would think would be important to the plot.

With editing Mammy out of "Fraidy Cat", the ending now makes no sense. We see Tom hide behind a corner with a sneaky look on his face, then cut to Jerry --- who is happy about something --- quickly getting spooked by his own reflection. Why is Jerry happy? What happened to Tom?

Until the year 2000, I never thought blackface gags were even black. I always thought they were explosions leaving a dirty face.

At least I have Drip-Along Daffy unedited on tape (Carrotblanca)

Just like Jon metioned,I have seen the cut and Uncut versions of "Fraidy cat" and it makes no sence cut.

It really gets to me when you watch a toon and some thing explodeds then theres this sudden cut to the next scene, its quite obvisious that something is missing STOP IT CN!!!

Does anybody know if the Black toys are cut from the sniffles cartoon "Toy trouble"?

billyjoelfan, the edit in "Drip Along Daffy" ( the dumbest edit in animation history ) is this:

Daffy is a sanitation worker at cartoon's end, and he says to the audience, "I told you I'd clean up this one-horse town". And that's how it ends on CN. The cut scene features Sheriff Porky saying to the audience, "Lucky for him, it is a one-horse town". Now, come on, not only is that laugh-your-butt-off funny, but it's also completely inoffensive; they don't actually show what Daffy would be cleaning up!

How stupid whats so bad about a toy that features black people playing instruments... Yoy know I've heard that even White people play music now-a-days.

You'd think CN are the racists taking ever reference to black people or native americans out of cartoons.

You've got a point, the majority of the Censored 11 feature the black characters playing instruments and singing and dancing. I mean come on, that's what they were famous for back then. And to draw them with big lips, what are u supposed to draw them anatomically correct. If u did then it wouldn't be funny. They drew every character with over sized body parts, even the famous people. So basically those cartoons were the same as all the other cartoons that they carictutured about musician and actors.
