View Full Version : I'll probably anger everybody with this, but...

Maybe it's just me but was anybody else appalled at Jerry Beck's planting that link to that abominable hidden mysteries of the Flintstones??? I know, I know the thing was SUPPOSED to be funny. But talking about sex acts of the Flintstones was just gross, not funny. Far, far worse was by planting that link, Beck became party to accusing Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera of drunken homosexuality (allegedly as the origin of "yabba dabba doo") and that is vile beyond words and legally actionable!!

Now that he has finally deleted th link to that crap, he ads a link to a ridiculous long piece of published goat-tripe (courtesy LA Times) praising and fawning over Haim Saban for giving $ 7 MILLION to the Democratic Party. We all know Beck's a political liberal, fine that's his business, but most cartoon lovers care about CARTOONS , not being propagandized by the LA Times (or anybody) for the Democratic Party or Haim Saban. And for most of us Saban is about as relevant to animation as a chihuahua...

Umm, I never noticed Jerry linking anything to that stuff. Was it on his secret page?

When did he post that link?

I saw that link, but I think he just tries to link to pages that are pertinent to the news or amusing in some way or another. I didn't think the Flintstones thing was funny either, but Jerry didn't write that. I don't know his political views really, but so what? He can say or link to what he wants...it's his page. I think you're overreacting a little, don't you?

The first one mentioned in this thread is plain dumb. The second is none of our concerns.

I don't know what you're talking about. Could you please post the link here?

Nowwwww I said it was likely to anger everybody didn't I !!! ...But that wasn't my goal. (I know full-well that Jerry is viewed as absolutely sacrosanct around here.) The Flintstones link was in his NEWS column!! (That was NEWS????) And it was on for about a week, I BELIEVE he took it off in the last 24 hours... Sorry I did NOT copy the URL either, so I can't guide you to it. And YES of course he can post any darn thing on his site he wants to... For that matter there is a site of a pornographic Betty Boop pictures that some people could say is relevant for cartoon art and/or for humor as well...  But I have NO desire to see that link or URL on his site either.

Am I over-reacting?? Noooooo. What I mentioned from it about Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera qualifies as serious libel and would be treated as such in a court of law. And spreading it with a link would be treated as part of that libel. It is very, very serious and Jerry needs to think about such things. Annnnnd how many people on this board are underage and read his site too. Additionally the lawyers for AOL-Time-Warner would likely take a keen interest in any site that might damage the continuing value of any cartoons that they now own... Including the Flintstones.

As for his political leanings, as I said before they are his business... Except when they intrude on US poor innocent cartoon lovers. Anybody remember the Presidential Election of 2000??? Jerry Beck veered way off-course on that one and posted how HE was going to vote and urged all of us to vote like him!!! (As if just because people liked his and Friedwald's book that they would follow them politically). When he posts political news and links they become our business (even if about someone as unimportant animation-wise as Saban).

Tim, if I were the Republican National Committee I would shout from the rooftops to the parents of America that the man who inflicted the "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" on them via their too-easily deluded children is the biggest single donor to the Democratic National Committee. Once word of that connection got around the political races for November of this year would be a foregone conclusion. Heck, I'd put Tom Daschle, Ted Kennedy and Hillary Clinton in Power Rangers suits just to drive home the point ;)

On a more serious note, when I see those little blurbs on the left hand column of Jerry's page, I do expect them to link to various news items relating to animation or to some sort of interesting animation web page. The Flintstones link definitely failed to qualify on either category and should not have been posted. You might as well link to a page showing Popeye and Olive having sex for all the animation info/humor that came out of that page.

However, if Jerry finds a similar page about two months from now relating to Scooby Doo, when the hype about that movie is in full bloom, I might be a little more charitable......

 Well, I dunno how that little link slipped past me. But seriously, you may be overreacting just a tad. Granted, he freelances for AOL-Time Warner, but I do believe that he has the right to post whatever he pleases...I honestly don't think they'd go after Jerry, rather they'd go after the one responsible for that stuff; and even then there's very little they could do besides sue the poor guy (the creator, not Jerry) to death, seeing as such a thing is a parody and falls under fair use provisions.

I once saw a flash animation/video of some...well, let's just say rather controversial action going on between Fred/Barney/Wilma. And frankly, it made me laugh because of the very absurdity of it. (My humor tends toward the twisted side. ;) ) And, as you and I both know, That's only the tip of the iceberg as far as net perversion goes.

As far as being angry, no I'm not, because you have a right to your opinion, and only the Mod's can tell you not to do something on the TTTP or any other boards. More power to you, dude!

One, I never saw the site in question. I saw the link, but never followed it, so I can't comment there. Two, lots of things are potentially actionable, but since the Supreme Court decision in Falwell's suit against Flynt, satire is more broadly protected (and that's what this sounds like) and thus a case would be hard to win. Three, I'm not at all angry with you (for the record, I've not been offended by anything anyone's ever posted here. I have a thick hide and translate things like that into Pig-Latin anyway), I actually enjoyed the rant. Finally, one's support for freedom of speech is measured not by the willingness to support speech with which you agree, but your willingness to support speech you loathe. Even if it's Ed, Edd and Eddie (easy stomach, don't turn over, now) or something equally billious. I frankly am more concerned about not being able to see something, even if it bugs me-heck, particularly if it bugs me. End of sermon.

I may not agree with what you say, but I defend to the death your right to say it-Voltaire

While I didn't follow the link, it doesn't sound particularly appropriate. What he does and does NOT include on his site reflects on him. Sick pornography, whether cartoon based or not, would seem to be the type of thing Mr. Beck wouldn't include.

Is that Saban hack a cartoonist? I for one am glad to hear about his huge political donation to the Democrats. It gives me yet another reason to avoid all things "Saban".

As to politics in Hollywood, they are all so far to the left, I consider Schwarzenegger to be a soft moderate! Heston is the only one worth his soap :)

Ham Sabin is a businessman who has made himself rich mainly by taking Japanese kids shows like "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" and then repackaging them for the U.S. market, with American kids substituted for the Japaense youths.

Actually, since Hollywood producers Harry and Linda Thomason were responsable for many of the documentaries in praise of Bill Clinton over the past eight years (and Harry is currently at work on another one) it's kind of funny to contemplate what the image of a Ham Sabin-produced documentary for the Democratic National Committee would look like -- characters gesturing widly, Democratic senators jumping on each other's shoulders to form a super-powerful Social Security robot, some kind of theme song like "Go Go Power Democrats" and a badly-dubbed George W. Bush taking the role of Rita Repulsa and spouting dialogue in something like the same cadance as Mojo Jojo on "The Powerpuff Girls." ("Auggh! The Power Democrats have defeated my invincible judicial nominee monster despite the fact that no one can defeat the invincible judicial nominee monster with which I am planned to take over the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals for which there shall be no other nominee but mine! Curse you Power Democrats!")

Sadly, all too often, our politicians behave like characters in bad anime (to anticipate the coming deluge, yes, there is good anime. Just not much of it and they show precious little of it on CN. Before I'm pilloried, I don't much care for most anime, but some of it is good) and we generally get the government we deserve-bad government. After all, we pick them out.
