As a kid, I saw a lot of Flintstones back on Cartoon Network in the 90's and on Boomerang in the 2000's. However I haven't watched any of it in several years now.

I remember really enjoying the show, but is the show still worth watching now as an adult? I've been thinking about getting the DVDs?

Keep in mind I'm talking about the regular series, not the spinoffs or movies.

Nothing is as great as any one remembers. If you get a great deal it is worth it

I was never a major hardcore Flintstones fan, but I am guessing it would probably be just as good as you remembered. It was meant for adults afterall.

Well, I watched it in the 60's (in its prime time slot) and I'm still watching it today. Some episodes aren't as funny as they once were, but others are funnier today that they were back in the day. It's a classic. :D

I can't tell you if The Flintstones is as good as you remember it being, for the simple fact that I'm not you and therefore don't share your life experiences nor your personal tastes. I honestly couldn't tell you if the show is as good as you remember; I can only give you my impressions of it, which is this:

I first caught The Flintstones in syndicated reruns during the ancient 1970's. I was never a hardcore fan of the show, me not being a huge Hanna-Barbera fan to start with; I found it to be kind of cheesy and repetitious in some areas (particularly after the kids came along), but it had some funny moments as well. The Flintstones was never my favorite cartoon, but I could watch it for half an hour and not complain (unless something better was on).

I was always basically 'so-so' about The Flintstones as a kid, and that continues to be my general opinion of the show lo these 40, going on 41 years. Not bad, just not the best.

I find it as enjoyable as I ever did today, but I was never a huge Flintstones fan. I almost enjoy it more now that I'm older. And if you still have Boom they still show it so you could check it out and see if you still enjoy it.

It is a great show, I think the early seasons are the best. The pre Pebbles era I prefer. It gets a little goofy towards the end with the add on characters and trying to parody pop culture of the time.

If you really a hardcore fan, check out the source materal the Honeymooners, that is even better in my opinion. No matter how many times I watch, the Honeymooners never fail to make me laugh. I could only watch reruns of one or the other, I would rather watch Honeymooners reruns over the Flintstones reruns, they are the original. Fred and Barney had nothing over Jackie and Art on the top of their game. Their comedic timing was just all time great in my opinion. But that is another story.

It's at least better than most other Hanna-Barbera cartoons from the 1950s-1980s.

Yes, some episodes are dated (mostly the latter season's pop culture parodies or the "stay in the kitchen" aspects), but overall, I think the show still holds up as one of Hanna-Barbera's best efforts. I sometimes tune into an episode on Boomerang and still find Fred and Barney hilarious.

I liked the Honeymooners as a kid as well (along with the Flintstones)...

Well I still watch it and find it enjoyable. However again, as some people here said I'm not you. It could be different opinions, they have it airing on Boomerang. How about you watch it on TV first, see for yourself, than if you still love it as much as you used to, buy it.

I really can't imagine The Flinstones holding up too well against what The Simpsons did during the 90's. But then again, I can't really imagine ANYTHING holding up to what The Simpsons did during the 90's.

As someone who watched quite a bit of The Flintstones in his youth, I can only say that now the show mostly makes me cringe. It's not funny or clever, so I don't know why I'd watch it. Even The Jetsons is better, and I can't stand The Jetsons.

The Flintstones was a primetime show with sitcom storylines. So, chances are you'll like it more since you'll actually get the humor more.

Not just the Simpsons, but King of the Hill, Family Guy, and American Dad also took the basic "animated sitcom" format pioneered by the Flintstones and did it much better.

The writing of The Flintstones is more basic and less witty than the shows it inspired. Maybe it was drop-dead hilarious in the '60's, but it sure doesn't seem like anything special now.

The Flintstones was just a product of it's time. It's style of humor seemed cutting edge back in 1960, when the series debuted, but times change, and people look for a different type of entertainment now.

I don't know where you got 1966 from. It was 1960. Also, I wouldn't call the show cutting edge. It was basically an animated version of The Honeymooners.

I watched it as a kid and liked it especially since I loved dinosaurs, I don't remember it being an great show though, I seriously doubt its that good. I do plan on re-watching the series some time in the future but mostly for nostalgia reasons. I'm sure its not a bad show I just don't think its compelling enough for an adult.

I just don't think its compelling enough for an adult.

It's no different than watching I Love Lucy, Dick Van Dyke, or The Honeymooners. It's the same type of plots and humor. The Flintstones is just an old sitcom, but animated.

You're right. The Flintstones began in 1960 and ended in 1966. That was a typo and I've since fixed it.

Also, I wouldn't call the show cutting edge. It was basically an animated version of The Honeymooners. It was the 1st animated prime time sitcom. I'd say that was pretty cutting edge, wouldn't you?

True, The Flintstones isn't considered "adult" by today's standards, but it was tackling the same sort of of subject matter that every other prime time series was doing at the time. Like I said, product of it's time.

From a technical point-of-view? Yes. From a story/character point-of-view? No.

Still holds up today in my opinion. Holds a bit better than some of the early 90's simpsons. (IMHO)

Exactly. You can debate the quality of some of the stories, but really it uses the exact same situations and type of humour as those shows you listed.

I think The Flintstones is for those a little older than the 5 year old set. It hews pretty closely to the old formula of the bickering-but-loving married couple, and that's not something little kids would necessarily "get". At least those younger than 10 years old.

I say if you enjoy the recent sitcom The King of Queens, then you should have no problem with The Flintstones. They are pretty much the same shows.

Me, I still think it's funny. At times. Obviously it wasn't a consistently funny show, being written by writers of varying degrees of skill, but it does occasionally hit some great jokes at times. I do enjoy it better than some more recent animated sitcoms as well. But you have to view The Flintstones with a different lens, something many younger viewers may not have the ability to do.

From a technical point-of-view? Yes. From a story/character point-of-view? No.

Aren't Fred and Wilma the first animated couple to have a baby? I mean usually in animation (anime included), a couple will usually be blessed with a child during the finale of a series and not the middle.

But taking the ground breaking aspect away, it's no masterpiece and I could recommend better cartoons. But it is decent, and should entertain you if you can enjoy simplicity.

I haven't really gotten an idea as to if Flintstones is worth getting on DVD. Keep in mind I know Flintstones won't have many (or any) jokes that will have me sitting there laughing out loud.

I just want to watch an enjoyable episode and the antics of Fred and Barney.

If unsure, I'd suggest renting the show on DVD first. The series' high points would probably be the first 3-4 seasons (Pebbles came along midway through the third season)...

I got mine on a sale for $15 per season set. Would I get it for more than $30 per season? Probably not.

Again, consider the prices of the places that you frequent. If you can get a set for lower than $20 then it's a worthy gamble.
