View Full Version : What is the best cell phone on the market today, and why?
Mobile technology is always changing and new phones come out all the time, but currently as of Jan 2010, what's the best phone out there across all carriers and why? I know everyone is in love with the iPhone and Blackberry is the biggest name in smartphones, but why choose one over the other? What's everyones take on the worlds best cell phones....? I am thinking of ditching this old Razr and going the way of an all in one device, so any help would be fantastic, I'm open to anything really.

I have a simple Samsung phone. It has a camera but I only ever use it to grab wallpaper. I think these fancy smartphones can be useful if you are a business man or a lawyer who needs to keep track of appointments, but for a simple consumer like me, it's not necessary. I have an ipod for music, a camera for pictures, a portable dvd player for movies, and a computer for programs. Shoving all of that into one device may be cool and time saving, but when that battery dies you have a paperweight. At least if one of my batteries die I can switch to something else. :)
Don't take this as an attack on smartphones. If you want one, you are welcome to have one.

You must be an Apple fan. My Droid (which I absolutely adore) has a *gasp* replaceable battery that I don't have to send the whole thing back to the manufacturer for.
The Droid's MP3 and video players are every bit as good as the ones on my iPod, and it has a speaker so I don't always have to use headphones. The best part about smartphones is having internet access any time, anywhere. Since I got it my lunch hour at work is no longer 60 minutes of staring at a wall. But as a phone? I really don't know. I've used it to talk to actual human beings probably twice since I've had it. Seems OK so far though.

Pfft, the Droid. Actually, the iPhone 3G and 3GS have removable batteries, you just have to remove two screws on the bottom of the iPhone and then you can take the battery out, it isn't soldered down like in the original iPhone. Personally, I like my iPhone and I see no reason to switch, the Safari web browser can't be beat, the apps are so much fun and the MP3 player is amazing, it's the worlds best phone. The Droid is pretty cool if your on Verizon and the newer slimmer Bold on T-Mobile and AT&T looks amazing, but for me the Apple iPhone is where it's at. If I needed a video camera or a high MP digital camera then I would probably get a BB or something different.
I love downloading games and other fun apps, I even have a police scanner on my phone and those things cost over $200 at some stores but my app was only $.99. Anyhow, get yourself an iPhone if you want the best of the web and applications.

No no no! That's not what I meant by "when the battery dies". :p I meant when you are out of juice. I like listening to music but I don't like having no phone when the battery is empty. This is my same argument against the kindle: you don't need electricity for a paper book.
I've had my ipod for three years now and I haven't had to send it back. A good defrag can solve many of the other user's problems.

I've been on Verizon for a little over 2 years now and have had zero problems with the connection.

I admit the battery isn't nearly as good as my iPod's, but its usually at 35% or so when I come home from work and I've got music playing probably half of the 9 hours I'm there. As long as I remember to plug it in once I get home its fine. Although, I never use it as an actual phone which I believe is usually the most taxing thing on the battery. Doesn't take much to surf the web and send texts I suppose.

I have never had any issues with AT&T, I have 3G service pretty much anywhere I go and call quality is very clear. I live in a major city so that may have something to do with it too....
My ONLY complaint about the iPhone is it's pathetic battery life, I have to charge it every night which is something I have never had to do before, but I use it a lot to which helps to drain the battery. Still, after calling someone and talking for 20 mins and then checking my Facebook and Twitter I am down to about 70%, the screen size and somewhat weak battery are the main factor in this I'm sure.

For me the Safari web browser on the iPhone can't be beat. Not to mention all the apps and not to mention the iTunes synching.

No you cant replace the iPhone battery by removing those two screws. CNet already shot down this myth a long time ago. I love my Iphone 3GS and its 140,000 apps, but besides the iphone, there is Google's Nexus One phone running newest Android 2.1 software. its the best Google phone yet. It can even transcribe voice into text for text messages, so all you gotta do is speak and press the send button.

I have done it myself with a much more powerful battery with more MAH, there are two screws underneath on the iPhone, when they are removed you can remove the screen, backing and everything else to it with a little force and trickery). I have replaced friends screens for $80 each this way, it's a good way to make some extra cash on the side, I have replaced my battery and my screen before too. It's no myth, the 3G and 3GS batteries are not soldered down like on the original iPhone with the metal backing.
A couple of other good phones out there would be the AT&T Tilt (original), it's bulky and big but it is great for a windows mobile "Palmtop" experience, it's a little old now though. Also, the Blackberry bold 9700 (the new one, not the old) is an amazing device with lot's of power and the new BB 5.0 OS.

Yea voiding the warranty in the process.

It's still possible though, my warranty was voided the moment I decided to jailbreak my iPhone anyway. Hehe.
Since it launched in 2007 the iphone has been the best cellphone on the market, no denying that. There has been plenty of "iphone killers" like the G1, blackberry storm, pam-pre, droid and now the Nexus 1 which like the others have failed and at the end of the day the iphone is still the benchmark on smartphones. Blackberry dominated the market before the iphone and because of it businesses still cling to it but its slowing down and will continue to it.
The battery of any smartphone will only get you through the day, but thats all you need, no smartphone is going to last longer than a day they all have to be charged at night.
In the near future the Android OS by google is going to be a big contender against the iphone but right now its just not good enough.
Anyways, I love my iphone and don't know how I lived without one and anyone who says they don't need one clearly haven't owned one ;). I have no loyalties to apple though as soon as the android is better I'll switch and if apple continues to be the benchmark I won't.

I like the look of the iPhone, but it's not something that I'd buy for myself because I don't see the point of paying extra for a bunch of features that I'd rarely (if ever) use. Basically, I just make calls when I'm out, which is why I have a pay-as-you-go phone. I would like to have an mp3 phone, so I'd have both a phone and an mp3 player in a single device (but I still want it to be pay-as-you-go). That will probably be the next phone that I purchase.

Boost Mobile just released the Blackberry 8330 as a pay as you go phone with unlimited calls, text, web and pic messaging for $60 a month. There is a ton of MP3 prepaid phones out there, Virgin has the Rumor 2 which can play MP3's, as well as the XTC, Boost has at least 2 or 3 and AT&T has a few that can do it as well.
