View Full Version : Dubbing Existing Subbed Series for AS

I realize that it isn't likely subtitled anime series will appear on Adult Swim - subtitles turn off a large number of viewers (never mind that I prefer them) and Japanese voice actors' residuals are extremely high - but is it at all possible for Cartoon Network to pay to get an existing subbed series dubbed into English?
I ask this because there are a lot of great anime series currently unsuitable for television only because they are subbed and not dubbed (including many of my favorites). In other words, do companies that offer only subtitled anime do so because they feel that replacing the original voices would ruin them or because they don't want to take the time to do it?
Hmm...I wouldn't have anything against subs. What shows were you thinking of?

Subtitles turn off kids, not adults. A subtitled anime would fit well in Adult Swim Action. Cartoon Network would gain limitless respect in the Anime community if they showed a good anime series subtitled, Evangelion uncut & subtitled on cable TV is an anime fans dream.
Of course, they'd slightly edit it, and everyone would call it a disgrace to the Japanese version...
Otakus are idiots.

Personally, I would love to see something subtitled on TV. But...
Subtitles tend to turn off your average American adult, as well. Not just kids.

It looked to me that things like Crouching Tiger were well recieved. I think that subtitling wouldn't turn off any adults who would like the things they show in the first place.

Crouching Tiger Sucked. i don't no why all those critics say it was so good. Critics are always wrong. I've seen so much more better Chinese style movies. That movie had absolutly no plot. The reason why the subbed it was because it took place in China thosuands of years ago and it would only be accurate if it was in Chinese. I do agree that the audiance did accept it suubed but that's a real life movie. Anime on the other hand should not be subbed. I think it turns the majority of people away. Plus wouldn't be better to listen to the voices in english so yoo could hear and watch at the same time instaed of spending the hole time reading. And if they leave it in Japanese it'll sound so foriegn and might take some getting use to. And from my experiences, many anime series have bad voices. I gues sthis is because they don't have enough actors for all the different shows. Their voices end up sounding so plain sometimes. And if its in english' you'll hear ll things your use to and understand what the character is feeling. If its subbed you really can't tell the tone of the character's voice.
In the end, i think anime in the states should be Dubbed...... unless they Dubbing company doesn't know how to do it good.
( plot candidate for example should be left subbed) Think of Cowboy Bebop, it had excellent dubbing. I think the english voice talents were better than the original Japanese voice talents.

Depends. If it takes place in Japan, than I'd rather see it subbed. Cause, you know, they speak JAPANESE in Japan. But if it's in Space or Europe or planet Sheeza or God knows what, than I'd probably rather see it in English. Considering it's a decent dub, of course. I will confess that I prefer to watch and listen to my animes, not read them.

I didn't know it was gonna be subtitled when I went to see it, but I'm happy it was. I doubt that if it was more commonly known it was subtitled that it would have done so well.
And yeah, Adult Swim's target audience would be turned off by subtitles. I only know 2 people my age, besides myself, who will even look at a subbed anime (and both prefer it, btw). I'm 17, btw. I know that if my dad didn't think any show that was drawn was made for peoplee with a single digit age, he still wouldn't watch an anime if it was subbed.

Subs arent bad. I watched the Cowboy Bebop movie subbed and had no problem with what was going on. Lotsa blood in that movie....Spike gets shot quite a few times too...

subs good ... dubs bad ... but you see, almost 99% of the shows that get picked up have already been subbed, otherwise, how would we know that they are good?

I beleive CN has already said they will not be showing sub-titled anime any time soon.
Anyway, Appleseed was shown subbed on Encore's "The Action Channel", and did amazingly well considering the movie is medicore at best. It received the highest ratings of all anime shown in Febuary, second only to Ghost in the Shell (Which was shown at a MUCH better time slot).
I prefer a dub. I don't want subbed, I want better dubs. Out of all my DVDs (60+/68 of which are anime), the only ones I watch subbed are Nadesico and Evangelion. But that's only because I hate Spike Spencer to no end.

Most shows are subbed simultaneously with the dub. Unless you mean fan-subs, in which case, are just about always bad quality when veiwed full-screen. I can't stand watching anime on comp.</edit>
Like reduced editing, the key word is wait.
