Is it me or have films picked up some bright on one side and dark on the other technique? In many older films lighting been normal as if you were in the room, but now when in a building most newer films look like they were filmed in a darker room with the sunlight pouring in through the window. Does anyone know why this is? I'm guessing its something to do with a film that was highly infuential.

I wouldn't say it was the first film to pioneer the technique, but the type of "source" lighting you describe can be traced back to John Alcott's cinematography for Kubrick's Barry Lyndon.

That was made in the 70's, about 20 years afterward lighting would still star normal, todays comedies usually stick to commom lighting.
