Although this might have been under a sort of sleep-deprived hallucination, I thought I read an article in a magazine (I forget which one) saying that Sony is developing Playstation 3 to come out in a few years. What would be a reason for pushing PS3 out this fast?

Actually, I think Sony is aiming for 2005. It may seem fast since the Gamecube and X-Box have just come out, but it's not really out of the ordinary. The Japanese launch for the PlayStation was December 3, 1994, and the PlayStation2 launched March 4, 2000. About 6 years and 3 months. If you look at the launch days in the U.S. you have September 9, 1995 for the PlayStation and October 26, 2000 for the PlayStation2. About 5 years and 1 to 2 months. 2005/2006 seems about right when you look at the fact that the PlayStation2 will have been out as long as the PlayStation.

Maybe I've been smoking the peace pipe, but does anyone else think 2006 is really far away? Crap, I'll be in college then!

They don't need to rush it. The PS2 is kicking butt. If the PS3 is backwards compatible (plays PS2 games. plus DVD's and audio CD and MP3's.) It will blow everything else out of the water.

Sony just need to bring it along slowly.

Of course! The Playstation 3 will be backward compatible with the original Playstation and the Playstation 2. Sony, in their infinite wisdom, has decided to make that the benchmark of their Playstation consoles. And it's great! :p

And The Dark Knight is right, it is a reasonable release date, when you think about it. Five years is a long time for a console to be fully supported. The PS3 will likely come out in Japan in 2005, and in the U.S. and Europe in 2007.

As long as Sony does this, and gives software companies freedom to make whatever they want, however they want to, on their systems, Sony will dominate the video game market.

Nintendo and Microsoft have a long, hard climb ahead of them.

Well, if the PS3 is coming out in '05, then Sony had better get busy and start downsizing the PS2, in size and in price. (hard to believe it's nearly two years and it's still $299! ) And before you know it, by '05 the PS2 will be N64 sized, be top-loading, and be called "PS Two." :p

...and I still don't own a PS2 :( LoL, by the time I can finally afford one not only will PS3 be out, but I'll be out of college and might no longer have the time to invest in the epic console RPGs I enjoy so much. :(

TV is way overrated. Play some video games! :D

If Nintendo get's their head out of their ass, they may be able to make good decisions... like going with DVD-G's instead of mini-disks

I waste all my money on DVD's. I get alot more use out of them and I know they won't be obsolete in a year. I have a gamecube with 7 games, been having it since November, it'd be pushing it to say I got 10 hours of play out of it since then. It's not because I don't like my Gamecube, it's because I don't like video games.

I'd much rather blow my money on DVD's.

I was going to make a thread about this. They said 2006, not 2005. That's one thing about Sony, they won't rush it out.
