Here is the letter I plan to send. Any comments are welcome. Now if I only knew who to send it to....
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing in concern of your recent decision to pull twelve cartoons from Cartoon Network’s upcoming “June Bugs” marathon. I believe that this is a very unwise decision. I think every Bugs Bunny cartoon deserves to be shown. Certainly, many of the jokes and statements in these cartoons are unacceptable by today’s standards, but these weren’t made with today’s standards. This was a time when this country was ignorant to the injustices done to these ethnic groups and we must be constantly reminded of how wrong we were. Here are some more reasons to show these cartoons:
1. These cartoons would have garnered very high ratings even at 3am. These ratings may now be lost and the ratings the rest of the marathon would have gotten may drop as well.
2. Don’t worry about tarnishing Bugs Bunny’s image. You couldn’t tarnish his image if you tried. Bugs is loved by millions all over the world and will continue to be for years to come.
3. I personally don’t think that showing these cartoons or any others for that matter with racial stereotypes, slurs, or humiliation would offend anyone. They are cartoons, not real life. I think the state of mind of America is beyond that. If anyone actually does get offended, I am deeply worried about the state of this country. I feel that we are open-minded enough to handle them.
4. Other cable networks (whose names I’ll not mention) aren’t afraid to show such shows as All in the Family in primetime. One episode even featured a blackface scene. And don’t say kids aren’t watching, because they are. I know. I used to be one of those kids. Has this affected America’s morals? Certainly not. If anything, it has strengthened them. It has made us more aware of the racism that is out there, and we should certainly be aware of it to prevent it.
I hope you will reconsider your unfortunate decision and air these cartoons, even at 4:00 in the morning with a strong disclaimer. Thank you for taking the time to read my letter. I hope it has touched you in some way and at least made you think for a while.
Sincerely,
Greg Brobeck
