It's rather hard to describe Zixx. I know that the majority of you, the readers, have never heard of the show, given that most of you likely live in the United States. But we've somehow snagged weekly advance copies, so you're getting the inside scoop whether you like it or not. And you should like it, because this is a very well-made kids' show.
Zixx, Flanngo, Riley, Meghan and Dwayne are the Masters Of The Universe -- sorry, make that Guardians Of The Globe -- two aliens and three humans out to save Earth from evil space aliens ready to take it over via The Keep, a mega-Mainframe with more mysteries than meatloaf.
Riley's been obssessed with this old man that helped him out once. He knows he has something to do with The Keep, and the librarian's true story is revealed in this week's episode, "Talk Like An Egyptian." He's the Architect of The Matrix -- make that the Archaeologist of The Keep. With Zixx' help, he can find the key that everyone has been looking for and will unlock the Golden Gate.
While the recurring cast has remained mostly unchanging, with the exception of the recent addition of Dwayne, the villains and side characters have consistently changed. We miss Earl, but we have the lackluster Mark O. to deal with now. Here's to hoping we see the Archaeologist some more, as his verbal tete-a-tete with Flanngo gets the lizard to be more than talking set decoration.
Once again, though, the show's biggest weakness is the length of the episodes. The mass of plot doesn't come through as well in a half hour as it would in a whole hour, or perhaps spread out over two episodes. Zixx isn't the only show in its genre with this problem. One of the major flaws of Power Rangers SPD is that many single-parters could have easily been two-parters. Something has to be said for a show that manages to be entertaining despite its time constraints, however.
