We know there are innumerable in-jokes peppered about the show...the recurring red and blue and yellow pallette, the refs to steel and flying and "super", the Daily Planet truck, the black glove in Lex's vision, and even "Good Old Boys" in Johnathan Kent's car. Now I hear talk of a young Bruce Wayne appearing in Smallville somewhere along the line.
My first query would be, can metahumor be taken a bit too far to the point of beating us over the head with it?
My second is, could the writers sneak in Justice League refs, as in having Clark meet younger versions of his future associates? For example, a geeky but brash blonde ornithology buff who gets really mad when her classmates derisively call her "that hawk girl" and who wants to be a cop? There were several Hawkgirls--were any born on Earth? I think one was named Shayna or Shania or something like that, which gives us a ready-made name for her (and someone for Lana and Chloe to automatically get jealous of and hate!). This could work as long as the writers don't fall into the "make her a kryptomutant" trap....

Ya know I was thinking a little about the overkill factor, earlier tonight at work in fact. It wasn't about Smallville, cuz I think so far Smallville is fine with the in jokes, but it was that Superman Lives script that Kevin Smith wrote. It seemed saturated with them.

We wouldn't wanna over do it, because the logical thing to do is have an equal ballance so both Superman fans AND newcomer fans can love it.
