View Full Version : Marvel Going Glossy?

Anyone else notice that Marvel has been adding glossy paper into some of their more high profile titles recently. NEW X-MEN and PETER PARKER: SPIDER-MAN are the latest additions to the glossy paper. What surprised me is how long FANTASTIC FOUR has had glossy paper. And it's a nice surprise to see them keep the price the same, even with this new paper. Obviously, Marvel is doing this on their more high profile titles as they become for...well...high profile in the mainstream.

I actually don't like it. It keeps the prices of comics jacked up and they are already too high anyway. Bring back baxter paper, at least. Something to make the comics lower in price. Who needs glossy paper for every freaking title? I remember when that was only reserved for special titles and graphic novels.

I'm with Calhoun on this one.

Glossy paper is nice, but wouldnt regular paper do just as fine and cost less?

I suppose its a small quibble overall, but hey, its my wallet I guess...

They haven't bumped up any prices for putting this in. I'm assuming Marvel's doing this to make the titles look more "special", and therefore stand out somehow. But Baxter Paper? Man...no way...that paper is just a bad excuse to bump up prices...

Stupid Question #365 - What in the world is Baxter paper?

Basically thicker newsprint paper. AZRAEL is currently being printed on Baxter paper, as is CATWOMAN. Personally, I can barely tell the difference.

Yet. I thought I read something on the news page from Jim about them bumping up the Canadian prices tho. I might be mistaken....

And why would baxter paper bump the price up? Wouldn't it keep the cost down? I personally would prefer to see ALL regular monthly comics printed on the same kind of paper that the DC animated comics are printed on. And that would keep the comics at a $1.99 price, theoretically. That would be nice.

I believe most of DC's titles are printed on the same paper as the animated comics, but are still at $2.25 (some, like Birds of Prey & JSA, at $2.50). The only reason the animated books are at $1.99 is to make them cheaper for kids.

This is weird, but...I hate it. Ask anyone who knows me, and they'll tell you that I regularly mention how every comic should have glossy paper. Well, I don't know what it was, but NEW X-MEN looked like crap. It totally ruined the story for me, and only VERY RARELY does art ruin a good story for me.

I really don't mind the glossy paper on the comic books; as long as the art and the story's the same, it doesn't really matter to me. :D

For me, the artwork in this month's NEW X-MEN was horrid. Igor is a talented fellow, but thias was just a terrible rush job, and most panels looked muddled and terrible. I don't midn the glossy that much. It worked very nicely in this month's PETER PARKER and always makes the art look nice int he TEAM UP books (especially UMTU #2 - #3 - wow).

i remember when comics were under a dollar

for that matter when my dad started collecting (a collection that included spiderman's first appearance, Xmen #1 and many other awesome comics that his mom proceeded to throw away as many mothers of those days tended to do) they were cheap

i can remmber when comics went up to 1.25 then 1.50

now some issues are almost 3 bucks an issue

honestly i like glossy paper and as long as the comic doenst go up in price im happy :)

Yeah, see, with the Ultimate books it works really well. Gotta check PP.

And...yeah. The art was just so darned bad in NEW X-MEN, I couldn't really tell if in was the penciller or the inker or the colorist or the glossy pages that ruined it. The glossy pages were new, so it was convenient to blame them :D
