View Full Version : Are Turner's AAP LT/MM Prints theatrical projection prints?

I ask this because I notice most AAP prints have "cigarette rings" at the end of each cartoon. I work at a theater and I notice these on all movie reels (which are useless to us since we use platters)
It would make sense if WB just gave AAP whatever theater prints they had around since making new dupes would cost too much money.
If so...that could mean that for most Warner cartoons, the original negatives might have only been used ONCE or at the most, TWICE! (Once for original release, then another time for Blue Ribbon version)
Given that idea...perhaps the cartoons don't need any restoration (depending on state the B&W cartoons are in...since they're on nitrate AKA flammable)
Thats what those rings at the end are? Why are they called "cigarette rings." I've actually wondered about that my whole life...

You've never seen a cigarette burn mark?
My guess as to their purpose is as a cue to the projectionist to start the other projector ('cause this one is at the end of the film)
anyone know for certain?
Actually, they always struck me as looking like medallions, not burns...

Yep. You're correct...or at least that's what I was told they were for.
I believe the movie "Fight Club" explains it nicely.

Originally 35mm film is stored on 10 min reels
so if you watch any old film you'll see these que marks
every 10 min which indeed is the projectionest que
to "fire" up the other projector so you won't have any
continuity break those reels with film geat pretty heavy
so there for the 10min reel changes a seventy min film will
be shipped on 7 reels.

I think I asked this question on the old, board, the OLLLLDDD one, and I believe all the responses here are correct. As I recall they would either literally burn a hole in the end or drip melted wax on it, and it would notify the projectionist to change reels.
