As I picked up Order #2, I noticed New X-Men. At first, I thought Ultron was in it by the cover. So I picked it up and opened it. Once I saw the shi'ar empire in it, I bought it! Also bought #s 122, and 123. To catch up in the story line.

Also picked up the first issue of Xmen. There are 5 different covers. It even was voted one of the top 25 comics of all time. So I bought 1 of each cover version (4 were $3, and 1 was $5) as well as issues 2 and 3. They were only 3 ea. Got 15% off too. Had a coupon. Not a bad deal! My ttl. came out to $28.86. For those backissues, and new comics.

I also have to read some backissues of Amazing Spider-man I bought last week or so.

For you New Yorkers. They still have these issues in stock. I know Vincent Benenati lives in my area. If you want the name of the store let me know. You can run a search for it at marvel.com comic book store locater.

so how is New X-Men? I never read any of the new ones. Does it have a good story line with the last 3 issues?

NEW X-MEN rules. Seek out everything since Morrison took over. There's a TPB of the first few issues. It just plain RULES. I never thought I'd read X-Men regularly, but I love this comic.

Ive decided I can't stand New X-Men.
It's so stupid storyline. First off Cassandra takes over Charlie's body. Then there's the fact that when the X-mansion was being attacked, where were the self-defense stuff that Forge put in?
And it seems that all the X-Men on the team are faceing enemies who are totally, kicking their butts. The issue where Scott and Emma walk into the Nu-Men office was outragously stupid, it had trap written all over it. Plus the new mutants aren't much help when the NuMen showed up, or any other threat.
Plus the going public, has screwed the X-men more than ever. It's going to invite any anti-mutant group their home.
This is a bad series, and I not reading it anymore.
If this was a revamp it could have been more in the Authority-like revamp. Powerful Mutants dishing out justice, their way or no way.

Call me Kane

I'd like to address a few points in the above post for those of you considering whether or not to buy the title. Be warned, there are spoilers (but hey, the above post took care of that):

*
*

Cassandra takes over Charlie's body: Well, wouldn't you? It was the perfect trap to kill mutants.

X-Mansion gets attacked: I'm no X-Men scholar, so I'm afraid I don't know much about the defense systems. However, no security is absolute. Cassandra probably took care of it when she was running (er...wheeling) around as Chuck.

X-Men facing enemies who are winning: What fun would it be if the X-Men kicked their butts in the first ish?

Scott, Emma, and the U-Men office: They're the freakin' X-Men! They gotta take risks to get the job done, and they trust their training if things go to hell.

New mutants not helping: Actually, when the U-Men showed up in issue 120 (I think; don't quote me) they helped a bit. Next time around, they were a little unprepared. And hey, they're still students! The staff doesn't wanna give 'em too much responsibility because they're not fully in control of their powers.

Going public: Yeah...that was part of Cassandra's evil plot. Looks like it provided a good distraction, and also opened up a lot of doors for human/mutant peace (as seen in issue 123).

"Powerful Mutants dishing out justice, their way or no way:" Since when has it EVER been that way? The X-Men's mission is one of peace, and to further educate the world that mutants are people too. Why would they start going the way of the Authority, killing and not giving a crap, as long as they beat the bad guy? The X-Men aren't ABOUT "beating the bad guy." It's a PEACE mission, full of compassion and optimism.

So that's my bit.

New x-men is starting to get on my nerves some. I see what he is trying to do but it seems to be missing some cohesion. Plus this months art left a lot to be desired. It started of OK but it is apparent that it was rushed at the end.

Emma's little telepath kids are very cool though. It will be fun to see how they grow in the future.

All right, there's NO WAY I'm gonna be able to cover everything without having the issues by my side, so anyone can feel free to add their own bit. Also, never try to read any Grant Morrison story without picking up every previous issue. Heck, this might even be longer than reading the issues themselves.

Cassandra Nova takes us on a tour through the ages and shows how, is primevil times, man evolved, and the evolved man killed the man it evolved from. Nova believes that history will repeat itself and mutants will one day conquer the world. Back with the X-Men, a lotta character interaction takes place as we get introduced to Cerebra, an amped-up version of Cerebro. Beast has a new look, and all the X-Men have new costumes. Cyclops and Wolverine rescue a mutant named Ugly John.

Things go crazy from here. Nova captures Cyclops, Wolverine, and Ugly John. Ugly John is on the brink of death, so Cyclops blasts him. Wolverine gets a hold of Nova and nearly kills her, but Cyclops stops him. Nova's vocal chords are ripped out. The big finish comes, as the mutant island of Genosha is wiped out by Nova's amped-up Sentinels.

Nova tries to take over Charles' mind. Charles nearly shoots himself to save the world, but Jean saves him. Yup, he has a gun.

Clean-up time. Beast and Jean Grey go on a mission to the remains of Genosha to search for survivors. They find Emma Frost and bring her back to the X-Mansion. One of the big deals here is that Magneto is counted among the dead. Also, Nova gets free from the trap the X-Men have her in. She reaches Cerebra and puts a plan in motion when Charles shoots her, nearly killing her.

Charles reveals to the world that he is a mutant.

The team finds out they have the flu.

Beast discovers that the human race will be extinct in four or five generations.

Beast issue! Beast trains a young mutant named Beak. When Beast returns to his lab, he encounters Charles. He tells Charles that Charles and Nova have the same DNA, and asks Charles why this is. We find out the Charles' mind was taken over by Cassandra Nova, and that Charles' mind is now in Nova's body. "Charles" unleashes on Beast, giving him mental and physical torture. Beak comes in, and "Charles" forces him to beat up Beast with a baseball bat, putting Beast in a coma that no one can figure out.

Beast is in a coma. X-Men still have flu. Jean Grey kisses Logan. X-Men still don't know that Nova is in Charles' body. "Charles" takes off to meet the Shi'ar. A team called the U-Men, who take mutant parts to make ordinary people mutants, capture Cyclops and Emma. They also take the X-Mansion by storm, but are stopped by Jean Grey, who unleashes the Phoenix power that nearly destroyed the world before.

Beast emerges from his coma with "Cassandra" in his arms and reveals the truth that Cassandra and Charles switched minds.

Jean Grey and Emma Frost take a journey into Charles' mind, and discover that Charles and Cassandra are twins, and that Charles tried to kill Cassandra while they were still in the womb.

"Charles" takes over the Shi'ar empire.

Cyclops searches for the mutant Xorn to help the X-Men. He finds him, but they are both captured by the Shi'ar.

The media make a trip to the X-Mansion, with positive results.

Beast discovers the reason for their sickness: Nano-Sentinels in their bodies.

The Shi'ar empire invades.

Issue 124 comes along, but no one knew what was happening there. Gonna have to read that again.

Oh, don't forget that Wolverine recuits the newest member, ANGEL - the Latino girl with fly wings. Plus there's Xorn...who I am really looking forward to seeing in action, myself. I think Quitely will be able to do some great stuff with him. Aside from the inconsistent art, NEW X-MEN has been an amazing read. The character interaction is great, the new uniforms (not costumes) look great (and are obviously movie-influenced). X-MEN hasn't been this good in ages...

finished with 124. Not bad. Better than the other 2. I think this story could improve a bit, but still not bad. Im not crazt about how they drew Gladiator. But its all good, i guess. Ill be picking up 125 next month. Too bad more xmen arent in it.....

My bad on the Magneto bit. I didn't buy X-Men 'til Morrison came on (yeah, I'm new school). All I know is that Charles was sitting horrified and saying "Magneto is dead" after the Genosha incident, so I just kinda assumed the two were related.

I didn't mention Angel 'cause she hasn't done a flippin' thing yet. I do really like her character though. She's got a lotta potential and I think she'll end up being important, but for now...

Xorn...dammit, I wish I could find a copy of the NEW X-MEN ANNUAL 2001 (the big Marvelscope thing). If anyone has an extra copy or knows where I can find one, hook me up!

Waspy...don't count 124 as an example of this run. That was just...ugh.

I really like the new uniforms, although most of the fans who've read this for ages don't. I just think they make sense for what the X-Men are.

But by far, out of ALL this, the scene that I feel most guilty for laughing out loud at (yes, there are many) is that scene in the school where the kid kills the other kid to get his x-ray eyeballs. If you find that issue (no, I can't remember the number), buy it no matter what the price.

What happened was Lobdell had Wolverine kill Magneto (to which nobody truly belived Mags to be dead, because hey, it's Magneto, and he's "died" so many times now it's hard to keep track) and then a mere two months later Morrison had the Sentinals kill Magneto, and pretty much the rest of Genosha (but Quicksilver and Polaris seemed to have been away at the time, because no one mentioned their deaths.

Personally, I don't believe that we've seen the last of Magneto. He'll be back at some point, probably because he was conveniently off the island or something similar.

But we didn't see Magneto die when Wolverine cut him with his claws. I don't even think they said he died directly, which would make sense why he appeared the next month in the comics in a super breif cameo before apparently being wiped out. But Magneto is like a bad rash and keeps on coming back. I bet he ain't dead. Not by a long shot.

Exactly! Or the Green Goblin in Spider-Man! You can decapitate him, douse him in gasoline, light him him on fire and then push him off a cliff - but he keeps coming back!

That would be Scott Lobdell, who wrote Uncanny when Claremont moved over to X-Men, and then after the Onslaught saga wrote both titles until the end of the Operation: Zero Tolerance storyline in X-Men and cowrote the Trial of Gambit issue of Uncanny (#350) with incoming writer Steve Seagle. Joe Kelly took over X-Men. They both quit a little over a year later (shortly before the Magneto War) because of editorial involvement, which plagued the X-Books for years, until now with Morrison & Casey (who might be better off with editorial involvement).

It's a shame, too, because the first few months of the core X-Books post-Lobdell were some good stuff. After they left, Alan Davis came onboard and wrote (and drew X-Men) about a year's worth of stories, climaxing with the long-awaited Twelve. Then he had to do a three-parter that basically set up Claremont's return, which looked as if it were going to be good, judging by the first issue, but turned to crap quickly. Joe Quesada came on board, shoved Claremont into a corner with X-treme X-men, and had Lobdell come back for an 8-issue run, setting things up for Morrison and Casey. For the most part, the run was good, except for most of Eve of Destruction. The character stories, such as Collossus' sacrifice, Kitty dealing with that, and Cyclops & Corsair's fishing trip, were really well done.

I actually liked the issue with Collossus curing the Legacy Virus. While it pained me to see the big guy go, I was glad he was finally able to gain the rest he deserved.

The Green Hornet
03-26-2002, 12:17 PM
he deserved a lot better than to kill himself to save mutant kind

i mean the legacy virus thing was so poorly handled over time-- they would have done better to retcon it with a colossus mini-series where he time travels or something

Spider-Man
03-26-2002, 12:22 PM
The Legacy Virus has been around the X-Men Universe since X-MEN Vol. 2 #15 I think, and it was just a waste, I found. Since Marvel was going to be streamlining the titles quickly, they wanted as many subplots to be tied up as fast as possible, and this was done, at Colossus's expense. Thankfully, Piotr can still be seen in Ultimate X-Men. The story was great, though. It was well done and the art was great. It was the highlight of Lobdel''s short run, up there with the Cyclops.Corsair issue. The rest of his run was mediocre at best, but still better than Clarmeont's confusing and befuddled run. His X-TREME X-MEN title is horrible, BTW. I'd prefer Casey's current stuff over that!

I like how they refer back to his sacrifice everyonce and awhile. While I am a bit cheesed Marvel offed him, I hope they keep him dead. I mean, the creamated the guy, so there's no way he can some back, except for some convoluted plot twist which will likely happen.

Colossus died in issue #390 of Uncanny Xmen. Also check out Xmen #110, which followed Colossus' sacrifice....
