For avatars I mean...

for whatever reason, .art images aren't subjected to the same standards as .jpg & .gif images. .art images don't have to be 75x75, they can be as large as people want, both in file size, and screen size..and it's really annoying.

Not only that, but .art images aren't supported by all browsers..

I can't see them @ home, where I use Galeon (a Linux Browser)

Well, Toon Zone doesn't actually use .art images, but there are users out there who try to sneak them into their avatars. If you happen to come across someone who does, let us know so we can fix the problem.

And, I believe the biggest user of .art files and the reason it's still around... AOL. Blech.

Yeah, it's an AOL proprietary image type. It isn't very good, and lacks cohesive support. I wasn just hoping there was some way to prevent people from using them in the avatars...

Unfortunately, as of right now the only way to prevent people from using them in their avatars is through manual labor. From what I understand, the board can't tell the difference when people use .art files (HOWEVER, this is *NOT* an open invite for people to alter their avatars to ART files, anyone doing so will be punished by tribble!) Perhaps there'll be a fix for it in vB3... until th en, the best we can do is work together against all art files... so if you see em, don't hesitate to tell any Admin thats online.

This thread might have been inspired by me! :o

Every avatar I have used is the size it was found at. I usually end up posting to ask an administrator to resize it. I don't know how to correct the size or the type of image. Every time I try to list an image other than .art, the message comes up: "This image is above the maximum size of..." so I feel like there is no choice. No, I don't like large or poor pictures.

Help?

You can resize images using various programs. You might have Photoshop, for example. I use the Mihov Image Resizer to shrink images down to the right size. You can download for free it at http://www.webattack.com/get/imageresizer.shtml and it works on JPEG and GIF files. It is very easy to use, just select the file you want to shrink, put the controls on the right to "Better Quality" and "75 pixels" and you are all set to shrink the file. It will just add a "mini-" prefix to a new version of the shrunken file.

For .art files, I imagine that you can probably convert them to JPEG or GIF form by opening them and choose "Save As" and select either JPEG or GIF. This can be done with the program "Paint" which can be found by going into C:/Program Files/Accessories
