View Full Version : "Ice Age" for toon lovers only.
I saw "Ice Age" yesterday....A wonderful full length toon, that is fast paced, well written, excellently directed, and just plain fun. A number of gags show up almost directly taken from classic toons. A squirel shows up from time to time, obsessed about holding on to and eventually eating an acorn.... Good reviews from Chicago papers that I read, but any toon lover, who likes to laugh, should see this on a big screan, not a TV. There is a largeness to the Ice Age that is not over played, but is felt by watching it in a theater...I am sure that some of that will be lost by seeing at home. But most importantly, at least to me, this film is as much fun as any full length toon. I'd like to hear what others say on it... Lastly, I didn't think 20th Century Fox had it in them to release this type of movie... thanks , Stuart

My girlfriend and I really liked it. It was a funny and just plain fun movie. I liked the fact that it was rated PG. I was a little upset about the short running time and having to pay so much money for a short film, but after watching it I thought the running time was good. We went to a 9:10 showing and then thing was sold out. There were people of all ages there. Adults were laughing pretty good, and the little kids were screaming. Sigh, but what are you gonna do? They're kids. :)
Our tight assed reviewer for The Oregonian here in Portland gave it a C and recomended everyone not to see it. He said it was not funny and unimaginable. He only liked the squirell. I couldn't figure out what there was not to like about it. This guy reviewes every film very harshly. The guy is horrible and I don't know why they keep him around.
The whole time even though I knew it was Denis Leary voicing Diego, he sounded so much like George Clooney.
I gotta agree with oldtoonguy on this one. A good movie and definately worth a trip to the theater to see this.

Dose anyone know if The Powerpuff Girls Movie trailer was infront of Ice Age? Please let me know. It'd be nice if more 2d animated films outside of anime would follow the approch that CGI films take, then maybe so many people wouldn't brush it under the rug so much. The Emperor's New Groove is a good example of this.

Sorry, but they didn't show the PPG movie trailer, at least, I didn't see it if they did.
I thought "Ice Age" was a pretty funny movie. I went to see the 7:00 showing, and was lucky I got there before it was sold out.
The rating didn't bother me that much, I thougt it was a good movie for all ages..... :) If you haven't seen it, go see it soon! :D

I saw this movie yesterday, and it was great. I liked how they used both Scrat teaser trailers in the movie. Did anyone else love the ending as much as I did? Poor little Scrat :D. The only trailers I remember are The Country Bears, SWE2, the animated horse movie, and I think a couple more. I thought there was a PPG trailer, but I guess I'll have to wait.

The only trailers that haven't been mentioned that we saw were The Crocodile Hunter's movie and Hey Arnold! The Movie. Didn't see Country Bears, but do I want to? The only good thing about that movie is that Christopher Walken is in it. Either as a voice or a human.

Yeah I still don't know if the Powerpuff Girls trailer made it or not. It wasn't on in my local showing, nor was Lilo & Snitch or Hey Arnold! Here are the trailers I did see:
Country Bears (A worse Disney movie than Lilo & Snitch)
Star Wars
Scooby Doo (A worse WB movie than PPG)
Stuart Little II
Crocidile Hunter Movie? This is a dumber idea than the Country Bears!
More trash I don't care about Like Mike
But my theater also treats animated feature films like garbage. They have had Osmosis Jones, Monsters Inc. and Ice Age on the same ripped screen. So I didn't expect them to tie good trailers with the film.

Here's the trailers I saw:
Lilo & Stitch
Star Wars
Hey Arnold!
that horse movie thing
Scooby
and I can't remember anymore......

Hmm, the trailers I saw before Ice Age were: the animated horse movie, Hey Arnold, Like Mike, and Star Wars Episode II. And I thought Ice Age was really funny - I liked it a lot. I loooved Denis Leary as Diego-he totally fit the character he played! XD My boyfriend and I are big Leary fans anyway :D

I saw this last night with my Star Wars bud's and we all enjoyed it. Of course, we were the only ones making any noise for the Ep2 trailer. ;)
As for the other trailers we saw:
Scooby Doo
Like Mike
Country Bears
But there was a commercial for some new Fox kids tv show...blech...
But the movie was great fun. I wasn't so sure 'bout Romano as Manny...but it worked.
The bits with Scrat were great...even the slightly expanded 1st bit that was in the first trailer for the movie. But the poor guy can't catch a break...kinda like the Coyote. ;)
I'd definately recommend it. :)

Ice Age...Dare I say it?-was one of the funniest and greatest animated films I've ever seen. I think I love it too much, but me, who never saw Monsters. Inc and find Shrek overrated, was so happy that it went beyond my already-high expectations. The sad parts(You know...Manfred's past...)weren't sapy; they were geniunely sad. Sid and Scrat(My fave character)were simply hilarious, getting the best lines and bits in the film. The only gripe I have was the ending, which was a little too sappy(And you know what happened with Diego...The same thing happened in Homeward Bound, so I had suspiciouns confirmed.). Otherwise, it was just classic. I'm keeping my eye out for the DVD.
And did I mention that I'm ecstatic about its' success? I knew it was a big risk and after seeing it, am simply thrilled at the fact that Fox has found a success in CG films. A shame they closed their traditional animation department after the failures of Anastasia and Titan AE, though; they were both quite good.

Haven't seen Ice Age yet... I'll probably catch it on video.
And I haven't seen the Country Bears trailer, but don't count it out yet. It was directed by Peter Hastings (the man behind Pinky and the Brain) and written by Paul Rugg (he IS Freakazoid). If Disney hasn't mucked it up too much, it could be a wonderfully wacky coda to Warner Bros' "silver age."

I haven't seen "Ice Age" yet, but the reviews and the previews look promising. It's an added bonus that they show the "Hey Arnold" trailer with it. By the way, here's a word of advice. The theater my brother, a couple of friends, and I went to last Saturday didn't have "Ice Age" playing, and they wouldn't let us into "Resident Evil" because my brother had no proof he was 17 (he forgot his wallet), so we saw "Showtime". If you are a smart person, you wouldn't even go NEAR "Showtime". It sucked THAT bad. We hated all of the characters execpt for Robert DeNiro, which, according to the reviews we read beforehand, we were supposed to hate. It looks like we're having the "Ice Age"/ "Resident Evil" double feature next week...

If I went to a movie and started to see a scooby doo trailer, my eyes would be closed, and I would try to rush good thoughts into my mind as fast as possible.

How short was it, approximately?

Hey, I don't blame you. If I go to A movie, and one of the trailers is stupid (This usually comes from movies that I know will be stupid.) , it ruins my movie going experience. I usually stand outside untill the film starts, unless any of the trailers are good, which are few, and far between.

I went and saw the movie on Sunday afternoon. I thought it was a fun film and offered a lot to the movie goer. As far as the previews go I got to see the Crocodile Hunter, Scooby-Doo  and Episode II :D.
I couldn't believe how packed the theatre was either. Go see this movie if you get the chance!

You are all lunatics. :)
The Crocodile Hunter and Scooby-Doo trailers were AMAZING. I would see these movies. I'm a fan of Steve Irwin, so I'd probably get a huge kick out of Croc Hunter: Collision Course, and I'm not a fan of Scooby at all, but the Scooby-Doo trailer was great. It really looks contemporized, not dated (Flintstones) or self-depreciative (Brady Bunch) or retarded (Charlie's Angels).

I'll probably catch it on video. You know how when you go to a mountain and you look at the view, it's breathtaking, then you watch a tape of it, and it's nothing compared to actually being there? Well, seeing Ice Age on video is OK, but seeing it at the theater gets you a little closer to the mountain.

Hey Terminatah, did you make that avatar of Scrat? I've been dying to find a Diego avatar, man! :D
Heeey I like the Crocodile Hunter too! I can do a pretty good impersonation of him - my parents think that's hillarious ^^;
Oh, and for that person who asked how short the movie was, it was 1 hour and 35 minutes (I think).

But yes, I made all the Scrat ones I've been using, and my real name is Diego, so they're all Diego avatars when you really think about it. I mean REALLY think.

Haha! Well there's an interesting coincidence! XD Nive avatars by the way - Happy St. Scratty's Day!
I tried my hand at making a Diego avatar tonight, and it came out really good. Waddaya think?
Most films aimed at the kids audience run 85-95 minutes...Disney has been running them that long for years, made money on it, so the other producers, just follow that model. In this case, length doesn't matter, Ice Age is just fun. An additional note on length; Harry Potter, I read, originally ran close to 4 hours. They had to convince the author, who had final editing rights, that kids couldn't sit that long. .She allowed a version of about 2 1/2 hours and the kids still loved it. I liked it too. I thought Potter was very well done.. (also another note on film, very rarely does an author have final editing rights, often, the author's version, turns out completely different from the movie version, and the author's complain their work has been ruined, many many examples of this. ) Stuart

Shorter running times are specifically part of feature animation, because the forty extra minutes going from 80 to 120 minutes would be better used on the next movie. In the case of Ice Age, a character (Sylvia the sloth)was cut out completely to improve pacing, as well.

I think 2 hours is a little long, as I would get too tired of even a good one by then. Besides, would using shorter running times possibly mean more "next movies"? Or is it just a cheap way for the producers?

Both. Next toon movie is becoming more about greenlighting AFTER the previous one does well when it opens.
Fox laid off some of the Blue Sky people when Ice Age wrapped up production, but now that upcomingmovies.com mentions a sequel being planned.
