You all came up with this to have a holiday the same week America has Independence Day, didn't you? I can see it now. It's like that Simpsons episode where they came up with Love Day. A bunch of CEOs were sitting around in Canada, trying to figure out how to compete with Independence Day and they all said, "I know! Love Day!" Then they said, "Oh, that was taken by the Simpsons." "Ok, then, how about Canada Day!"
Just kidding. Seriously, what is Canada Day? I guess if it celebrates a specific event, it's cool, but if it's just there to be there to celebrate something in general, I'd have to put it in the same category as Love Day.
And a happy Canada Day to you to, DickGrayson! ^_^

It's when Confederation was signed in 1867 (Is that the date?), July 1. :P
Ahhhh Molson. How would we define Canadian without them? (I think it's funny that last year Joe Canadian said he was not a lumberjack, and this year's commercial has lumberjacks in plaid and stuff).

Yeah it was on this day today in 1867, that John A. Macdonald signed our Confederation (which is kinda funny since it's not really a confederation but a federation). Anyway, HAPPY CANADAY EVERYONE! yay!

Thanks for the info. I feel so uneducated in the history of the rest of the world, it's sad. Maybe I didn't take the right electives in school!
DickGrayson, I'm surprised you hadn't seen that already. It says right in the location field under my avatar! ^_^ I'm from Ontario.

I hate how movies protray canada as being cold constantly. In reality, Canada is just the USA, it has it's colds and hots. Canada just get's em' first.. :)

Yeah, what's the deal with the territories? I know Nunavut got carved out of somewhere, and I thought I heard reports about something being carved out of Quebec (or maybe it was a lawsuit about Native American lands there). Unconfuse me, someone.
(Maxie, doing his best to feign an interest in the Great White North ;) .)

Nunuvut was carved out of the eastern Northwest Territories. As for Quebec, they've been trying to break away for years. The French held on to that province the longest, so it has a different culture & has as many French-speakers as English. The Native American lawsuits are all over the southern half of the country, I think.
Anyway, happy double holiday to both sides of the border! I think both countries should celebrate together, not just the border states/provinces. The more the merrier!

I knew all about the Bloc Quebecois (sp?) and the separatism issue; I just wasn't sure if Nunuvut was carved out of NW or Y territory; I wasn't even sure it wasn't detached from Quebec itself. Anyway, do you know what the lawsuits are about?
Only 25 posts, Old Maid? Your posts are too good; that low count cheats the rest of us. :)

So I'm interested in the opinions of the Americans on this board of the polar bear hunting issue in Saskatchewan

I think polar bears should be allowed to hunt Saskatchewans without limit or interference. After all, when polar bears with guns are outlawed, only outlaw polar bears will have guns.
Or is there some facet to the issue I'm missing? ;)

I didn't know there was an issue. What's the story?

Nah.....it was in Rick Mercer's "Talking to Americans". Only I boffed it up, it's supposed to be "polar seal hunting"
Americans were also asked their opinions on the cod overfishing in Saskatchewan, and if they want to go on top of the Peter Manns bridge.

You're too kind. :)
The lawsuits ... so many to choose from. A fishing rights dispute on Bruce Peninsula (Lake Huron) ; lobster harvesting and fishing by the Micmac in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. The reason there's a problem is that the government decides what constitutes "subsistence" harvesting. The figure's too low for for tribes but too high for the non-natives (who are subject to seasonal limits.) Also, some years back there were complains from the tribes in British Columbia about a gold mining operation. The company wanted to run a power line (over 3000 km) through traditional hunting grounds. That same region was flooded out by a dam. I'm sure I've missed a few more. The reason so much is happening now is that times are changing. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought First Nations didn't get the vote until 1960.
Still, better to resolve it in the courts than on the street.
Belated happy birthday, Firefly! Hope you enjoyed it!
