View Full Version : Movies on Adult Swim

Do you think Adult Swim should have movie specials like Toonami does? I think if they were ever to broadcast movies on the block, they should broadcast the Lupin the 3rd and Tenchi Muyo movies, as well as the Cowboy Bebop and Gundam: Char's Counterattack movies. They would be perfect for AS Action and none would need editing (except for Cowboy Bebop). What do you think?

Lupin and Tenchi would need editing, also.
I would love to see movies, but the only one that you listed I would want to see is Knockin on Heavens Door. I'd love to see the Inu-Yasha movie, The Boy Who Saw the Wind, or classics like Mononoke or other works of Hayao Miyazaki.
Off topic a bit, but I wish they'd pick-up the Inu-Yasha series. It wouldn't be hard since Viz is about to start the dub, just ask them to edit it while they're at it. It'd probably work better on Toonami than AS, though.

FUNimation is producing an edited version of Lupin the 3rd. Whether this means a TV deal has been set is unclear.

You're crazy, Koggit, for not wanting to see Lupin the 3rd movies, one of which happens to be written and directed by HAYAO MIYAZAKI, whom I believed you mentioned. Without Lupin, there would be no Bebop.

I think that it would be great to have Action movies on ASA. But i think thats its too early to be shwoing movies being that the block is so new.
And don't forget thats its only on once a week so it may be hard to skip out on episodes from running series.
Movies would be great oce every sp often to keep the block fresh

I would like to maybe see some movies based on existing AS shows produced specifically for the block. Sort of like the disney channel original movies, only not so crappy. Think how awesome a Home Movies....errr.... Movie, would be.

They probably wouldn't show the CB movie because it's going to be (somewhat) commercially released for the U.S.
By the time these movies come out, both AS comedy and AS action will be on their own two feet with large, dedicated audiences. Which is why when that happenes they need to show an unedited Char's Counterattack.

Editing the Cowboy Bebop movie would take all the fun out of it (Ive seen it) and it is gonna be released soon anyways i suppose.

The Fatal Fury movie and specials should be on AS. I believe two of them have already appeared on Sci-Fi channel with minimal censors. They'd just have to pick that up.

I've seen the movies and they're ok. I think they'll be good movies to show. And they scfi cencorship was just not drawn over like the toonami stuff. :D

Grave of the Fireflies should be on AS. I can't think of any other animated movie that would fit so well on AS. Heck, I don't even think there would be anything that would really require editing in that movie. That movie should be shown uncut on AS.

Yes, Grave of the Fireflies is superb. Best. Animated Movie. EVER. It rocks, pure and simple. Roger Ebert even put it on his "The Great Movies" list, joining it with such classic as 2001 and Citizen Kane. And it wholeheartedly deserves that spot. It would be the most sensitive and truly adult thing yet shown on the block. It would prove to people that AS has the potential to be more than throwaway comedy and mindless robot action.

*Sniffles*I can't find Grave anywhere, and I don't have the cash to buy it online...
Do a lot of people like Akira? I've heard so many mixed feelings about that movie, but it's important in that it really brought anime into the US.(Though it wasn't the first; Astroboy and Matsumoto series aired long before.) And considering it was just remastered and redubbed for a special edition, the time seems pretty ripe.
Hmm.....Are the upcoming Matrix animes going to be movie or show-length? They might fit.
And yes, the Tenchi movies would be great.(Though little would have to be edited even for Toonami.)
Sorry if my suggestions are stupid. I'm still a budding otaku, remember?

I picked it up at Media Play a couple of weeks ago. Suncoast might be a good place to check.

You limit yourselves. Why Not show americian animation features on Adult swim?

Cause last time I checked, the last time an american made an animated film that tried to be remotely mature, Titan AE, it was a piece of crap. Despite all the negativity around TV animation, atleast we got the Simpsons, South Park, Futurama and King of the Hill. When was the last time a remotely good adult animated flic was made by americans? Is there even one? I can't name one.
Actually, come to think of it, there is the South Park movie. But CN could never get that

The guy's Names are bill plympton, ralph bashki, and, uh Bill Plympton animated "The Tune" Himself.
So The mainstream dosn't have that many directors, but if cn where to dig around they could probobly find somthing.
Why dig just because it's American?

Heavy Metal (Not 2000) is the only good, mature, American movie, I'd want to see on AS. I have nothing against American animation, very little tops it in the Fun-for-the-whole-family-area.
Just, for the most part, I prefer anime. Especially when it comes to action.

Action, sure, but I wanna see comedy movies too. And there's been some GREAT stuff out of the independent animation scene.

LoL, I saw that. Didn't much care for it, seemed like it was made just to be 'naughty' with the nudity and stuff.
Things can have nudity and tons of violence yet still be childish if they lack good plot and characters. DBZ's a perfect example :p

Sure, of course. We need names though. I think an AS movie night should have rotating action/comedy.

Hey, this is the thread I was looking for!
How about Akira?

For the love of god, no!
I think we'd have a whole lot of people running around bashing it because they would say it "Lacks plot"... if we could some-how force people to read the manga, and then play the movie, it could work. I don't want people bashing one of my favorite movies just because they don't understand it.
*gets to work on mind-control device*
Akira does seem to be one of those love/hate movies. Its biggest downfall is that you can't understand what's going on until you watch it the second time. There are so many things that just don't make sense until you've seen the end, and then while rewatching it starts to fall into place.
Which makes it bad for TV viewing. New audiences will be sitting there at the end going, "What the hell just happened?" Usually, that's where people either love it or hate it: some want to go grab it and watch it again out of curiosity, while others want their two hours back.
I'd love to see Princess Mononoke on ASA Movies sometime. I really enjoyed it, and it does fit the block. It's too complex for kids, has enough action for teens and some very interesting moral questions & social issues for adults to follow. CN might be a bit shy about the 'gods' though.

I actually think I understood Akira the first time I saw it (although I'm still not certain). I don't really think you need to completely understand it, because it's so cool anyhow. But yeah, I'm sure people would still ***** anyway.

There's only two ways to fully understand Akira. One, is to read the manga, the other is to have the manga explained to you.
You can't compress 1000 pages of manga into two hours and expect it to make sense. If they weren't going to show the entire government conspiricy, they should've left it out all together and spend that 10 minutes explaining more about Akira himself. The movie is more of eye-candy for those who read the manga. It can be enjoyable even if you havn't read the manga, but I don't think watching it more than once will help you understand something they didn't explain.

Actually, I downloaded a guide off the net that explains almost all the "Huh?" stuff. But I agree, having it weird and unexplained was a bad idea. And they would have to put it on very, very late if they want it uncensored. (Even then, I'd be cautious watching it. That last scene....Uggh....That was just too gross for my tastes.)
The sad thing is, CN could probably pick it up, but not Mononoke. You know who has the American rights, right? Remember who brought it out in the US?
That's right.
I guess the only things I can say that would fit would be the Tenchi movies and Grave of the Fireflies(Which I haven't seen, but because I'm such a dirty bastard I read a synopsis online. Sounds very good.). There are probably more obscure ones out there that would be good, too, but they'd have to do some searching.

They did a good job with the Mononoke dub, and I have high hopes for Spirited Away.

I'm not talking about HOW they dubbed it. It's the fact that Disney owns the rights, and there's not a chance in hell they'd let a rival network show it.
And they have shown little interest in doing Spirited Away last time I checked.

That's changed. They have the rights to it (both Disney & Dreamworks were in negotiations with Ghibli) and Pixar is dubbing it. It should have some kind of a release in theaters this summer.

I'm pretty sure I figured almost everything about Akira (for the movie at least)by the end of my first viewing, you just have to sit there and think "what the hell was that supposed to mean" during the filler scenes.
I really liked the end scene, it wasn't THAT gross. I think Invader Zim did a tribute to it in the ep about space babies.
