Beyond Evangelion, or perhaps it is....Evangelion Beyond. Anyway, lets talk about Neon Genesis Evangelion. A great anime, with a not so great opening. (That would be directed towards Oranthal.) It is pure genius...well maybe not pure. But lets say 'strained genius.' The first time you see NGE, it strikes you as another anime with that same story line, Earth is under attack by creatures. Blah Blah Blah. But after getting into the whole story line, it is much more than just that. ONLY students born in the year 2001 (it takes place is 2015)can pilot the robots used to fight the creatures, which are called 'Angels.'
I would like anyone who has seen this anime, and knows more into the show, then just the robots fighting angels, to post on this thread. So others can be informed about this anime (Japanese Cartoon).
Not simple things such as the names of the characters, but things if you had researched farther into the show, and found out more. More, complex things.

I've pretty much talked all the Eva I could 3 years ago when I first finished the series.
The opening ain't bad...
I think it resembles an Ingmar Bergman film--lots of choppy editing and onscreen text. Also like Bergman, it gets really into the psychological states of the characters. Actually, it's more psychiatric than psychological. All of them are nutcases, and much of the show is like a shrink session.

dammit, i just typed a long response and i got logged out for some reason when i hit the submit button. here is roughly what i typed up:
saying that evangelion does not have a great opening is just...is just blasphemy, MAN! yeah, i agree with you that initially it is a rather typical anime with robots piloted by 14 year olds to fight against the bad guys. as the show progresses, it is so much more than that. it is about the characters and as leaping larry jojo, said everyone on the show is whacked in the head. the story of the eva and the angels is just a plot device to move the show along.
did you now that the creator of the show, hideko anno, was depressed when the show was conceived? that probably explains why the tone of the show is the way it is. there were some fans who did not like the ending to the series, which is kind of insulting in a way because it was his way of talking about his depression, and the fans wanted more from the ending. although it does leave the story about the angels and the 3rd impact hanging, i still liked the ending. anno, through the pressure of fans, made End of Evangelion, which i also liked. it is argued that the last 2 episodes and EoE happens at the same time which seems likely.
there some theories of evangelion that i would never considered before reading them on an eva message board. one theory was that episode 1 through 26 happens inside shinji's mind. if you remember from episode one, shinji was about to use the phone and he saw rei on street. he thens looks up at the sound of the birds and when he looks back down, rei disappears. supposedly, the point throughout the series was so that shinji would lower his AT Field so that he de-evolve with the rest of humanity and return them to state before anyone become a human.
some praise evangelion as the one of the best anime out there while others say it is mental nonsense. eva is an acquired taste whether it is good or not depends not on the popular vote, but rather their own opinions.

Well, NGE is a good anime. and I'd like to say a few things that I found out like..
The Eva's were made after angels in the bible (I can't remember the verse now..).
There are a few more relations into the bible with this. But I'm not sure if they were done delibrately.

Anyone see Kare-Kano yet? I consider it an extension of Evangelion--the lead heroine is kind of like Asuka, and the psychology is still pretty intense.
Still, it's lighter, funnier, and more palatable in some ways.
