View Full Version : Marvel's Losses = DC's Gains???

With all the bankruptcy swirling around Marvel Comics, wouldn't it be cool if AOL-Time Warner purchased Marvel & all their character rights?

They won't have to totally merge the universes. However, they could introduce a new line of continuity. Just a few titles dedicated to merging DC w/ Marvel

For example: they can start a new Batman title, a new Spider-Man, title, a new X-Men title, a new Superman title, a new JLA title, etc...

Just one new title for each of the major franchises...then occassionally have crossovers.

Imagine a new Batman title: issue #1: Batman vs. the Green Goblin!!!
Or an issue w/ Spidey vs. the Riddler
the JLA vs. the Skrulls
X-Men vs. Darkseid
Green Lantern vs. Silver Surfer (actually, I think that happened)
Superman vs. Magneto
The Flash vs. Venom!
Wonder Woman vs. Rogue
Captain America vs. Ra's al Ghul
Wolverine vs. Lobo!!!
Daredevil vs. the Joker
The Punisher vs. The Hitman
Ghost Rider vs. the Spectre
The Hulk vs. Doomsday
Darkhawk vs. Mr. Freeze
Nightwing vs. Elektra
They don't have totally mix the two universes, but a regular guess shot would be sweet.

plus, if AOL-TW-WB-DC purchased Marvel, they'd finally have some decent animated series. I hope the CGI Spider-Man on MTV is good. I'd hate for it to benother Max Steel!!! Or worse...Cubix! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

I'm sure Marvelheads

How about not. How about we keep the two companies separate, so they actually have to provide quality products.

Sorry...as I was saying:

I'm sure Marvel heads would object to such a proposal.
Well, at least the old school Marvelites. I'm not sure about the newbies.

Frankly, I'd be most interested in the Batman-Spider-Man crossovers.
I've always wanted Bats & Spidey to take on the Riddler & Mysterio. I think those 2 villains combined would be very dangerous: Nygma's puzzles & riddles mixed w/ Mysterio's lethal holographic technology. Talk about a dangerous game!!! Plus I'd really love to see a Batarang lodged deep into Mysterios' dome, just before Bats cracks his shell open with a demoralizing backhand!!!

But a Joker-Green Goblin partnership would be hella lethal for Bats & Spidey. I see a nice aerial dogfight w/ GG on his Glider and Bats in the Batwing near the Empire State Building, while the Joker keeps Spidey busy at Coney Island.

(SIGH) We can dream, can't we?

Crossovers are crap.

Integrating the two universes would ruin both. You think they have continuity issues now??

Hey we can do more than dream. Funny you should mention Riddler and Mysterio, cuz i've been racking my brain trying to come up with a cool fan fiction plot involving batman spidey and those two villains.

And if you're lucky you might be able to find the two Batman Spidey crossovers that they made.
The second one involved a Kingpin/Ras Al Goul teamup that was pretty cool.
But the first one was Joker and Carnage. And I must say that was beyond awesome.

Dag they're going bankrupt again? I did hear rumors of Disney's interest in them, and it makes sense, seeing how their rival AOLTW owns the anti-Mickey= Bugs, the anti-McDonalds= Burger King, the anti-coke= Pepsi, the anti-Marvel= DC. Why shouldn't they buy Disney, its a match made in hell.

The Problem with Marvels financial situation started almost 10 years ago

I was what you would call (and still am) an old school collecter.

The shipping Unions wanted more money, and started holding back and intentionally "missplacing" or delaying shippments on massive scales. Order 500? get 50 with a slightly discounted 2nd shippment a week+ later.

The shipping Unions AND the Distributing warehouses were working together to put a stranglehold on the industry, which eventually led to the distributors taking over with the "guarantee" that things would run smoother. Unfortunatly it also allowed them to set their own pricing and labor routines, further damaging Marvel in particular.

Basicly they strongarmed/pseudo-blackmailed Marvels submission, and Marvel has been losing money ever since. :(

I have 30 long boxs and 60 medium boxs of tons of titles going all the way back to the late 50's early 60's (over 10,000 comics, all special bagged & boarded)... right up to when Marvel started the new Continuity strategy in an effort to induct new readers at a fresh starting point, without putting the burden upon them to learn all that went before.

All it did was drive away the only REAL support they ever had... the traditional collector's & their buying loyalty no matter HOW goofy a storyline might get.

It was about tradition and loyalty combined with a history & love for a title... "I've always collected this title, & I always will".

When they tossed out the past.. thousands of us left.

I was spending $400-$500 per month on ALL the various incarnations of various titles and hero's.. and they betrayed me that last time (i.e. : gimmicks....the first few were poly-bagging in plastic that will eventually destroy the comic, but drops value 50-80% when you take it out... the other was a gazillion covers for the same damn issue).

I miss what was, and every once in a while I pull some boxs out & read for days :) (sigh)

PS: X-Men vs. Darkseid has allready been done, as has Superman vs. Dr. Doom, Superman vs. Spiderman.. Batman vs. Hulk, Spiderman vs Wonder Woman, AND Superman vs Hulk :D

As much as I loved the crossovers - I think a merger between the two would cause certain chaos. This would not only destroy continuity (except if they used Access) but would probably make it incredibly tough to have any form of competition in the comics world.

Also, even if they did merge it wouldn't necessarily lead to better stories - just look at the WWF after it merged with WCW. Didn't we see the whole nWo thing a couple years ago?

No offence but none of this is even remotely true. There are no comic book industry "shipping unions." Distributors never set Marvel's prices or labor routines. Marvel's money problems came from their owners acquiring and/or merging with a number of other companies and being unable to service their debt. In fact, one of these companies *was* a comic book distributor.

All have been done
(ex. X-Men vs Teen Titans, DC vs Marvel, Amalgam)

Ghost Rider vs. the Spectre

Not EVEN in the same league! It would be more like Eternity or someone like that vs Spectre. Maybe GR vs Etrigan?

Darkhawk vs. Mr. Freeze

First, Mr. Freeze would have to file with the Missing Person's Bureau. I think Darkhawk and Sleepwalker got an apartment together in the Phantom Zone, or something.

Marvel's been out of financial trouble for years.

And if DC took over Marvel, you just know that the characters would be ruined. Not just because DC can barely manage their own characters, but also in order to spite Marvel.

Half of the reason Marvel is so cool is because they do things differently than DC. If DC took over, you'd say goodbye to Joe Q and Bill Jemas (who, in my opinion, is the Spin Doctor of comics).
