View Full Version : Talk about your online life!

Let`s face it, it may be looked upon as nerdy and mentally/socially unhealthy by the rest of the world, but most people have quite a deep little niche in virtual-life, and have met some interesting people and places on the magical universe of the internet. So talk about them! Where do you go outside these boards? Ever met famous people on the internet? Ever come across COMPLETELY insane jerks? Whatever you feel is worth mentioning, mention it! Here we go.................

When i`m not here, i`m in palace chat (http://scythemantis.homestead.com/files/palace2.jpg) (I know i`ve linked to this image before, but it`s just SO much easier than attempting to describe the thing)I used to go to the scifi channel`s palace, which was real nice, but the company that owns palace went bankrupt and most of the commercial servers shut down. It was rebuilt by the former moderators of the place, but it went to their heads and they started banning people left and right for things that were never in the original rules... I wrote and illustrated a rather tasteless (PG-13 at the worst, I guess) story about them on this here crappy page (http://www.geocities.com/scythemantis/tms.html) which i`m happy to say they have taken in very good humor, but it isnt very funny if you don`t know them, so maybe you should just not bother. I now go to the "faction" palace set up by some of the people who were banned (the one in the screenshot up there). We`re currently arranging to all meet at the maryland anime convention which is convieniently only an hour away from me.

Then, theres...erm...X-E... the forums of www.x-entertainment.com which is NOT A PORN SITE. Anyone who`s never been there instantly assumes from the name that it is one, but it`s just a lot of hilarious -and I do mean hilarious- articles written by a guy about toys, cartoons, movies, books, animals, everything cool! I strongly suggest reading some!

But the forums...oh, heavens. How could I possibly describe the madness that is x-e forum?! You could always read the posts (if youre not easily offended some are HYSTERICAL, and it`s even a decent source for entertainment news) but I wouldnt suggest registering unless you`re the sort who throws rocks at hornet`s nests and then doesnt run away.

A psychologist would have a field day with the inhabitants of X-E. They have a subculture unique to their board and their board alone. Almost their entire existence revolves around sarcasm and tastelessness (nothing is taboo... not the WTC, not aborted fetuses, not nothing). ANYONE who takes anything on the internet seriously is immediately subjected to relentlessly harsh and degrading online pranks until they either leave the forum in tears (x-e`s favorite result... they practically drool at the thought of emotionally scarring people) or become fully hardened and desensitized and start spouting out the wisecracks themselves, at which point they are finally accepted into x-e`s elite troll collective. Theres plenty of truly hilarious posts, really good "real" conversations and I even moderate on of the sub forums (the animal one, where noone ever trolls anyway so I don`t have to do my job) but otherwise it`s a kill-or-be-killed, completely insane mish-mash of satire and an unending amount of truly bizarre in-jokes (if you laugh at the phrase "TEH AIDS!!!111", or "F*** YOU, CUDDLADD!" you`re an x-e`er.) A third of the posters arent even real... just fictional people/characters who`s accounts are controlled by others. One of the oldest regulars claims to have been "played" by over six different people, but he`s probably joking. Like I said, it`s a HUGE mistake to think anyone there is ever *not* joking.

Now I know you`ve probably seen many boards in that kind of anarchy, but I assure you, they`re all cheap imitations. X-E is the cream of the crop... I have no idea why I go there, or why they made me a mod, but it`s grown on me quite a bit and i`ve carried their in-jokes out into the real world with me. I love hearing people say "......................huh?"

:)

(I mostly just felt like doing this post because I realized after being on toonzone/world`s finest for more than a few years, i`ve barely ever talked about the rest of my life on OR off the net. It`s getting boring to be so impersonal.)

Well, I only got the Internet four years ago (*collective gasp*). Yup, that's right ^_^' Before then, I was using an old 1991 LCII Mac to do homework... *shudders*

Besides this board, I'm most often at the Cybersix Message Board (http://pub18.ezboard.com/bcybersix) , where I was recently made an administrator. It's a lot more casual than these boards, and there are rarely any topics that have to DO with Cybersix on the general board anymore. I made a lot of good friends there, we chat on ICQ, and I even met six of them IRL (Even though three of them lived on the other side of the country!). Lately though, the majority of the board members are 13-15 y/o girls, who can get kind of annoying. Ah well, c'est la vie. The art kicks though.

Well, my online life started in 96/97 on IRC - DALnet #StarTrek...
For those of you not in the know, DALnet is the 2nd largest IRC Network, and #StarTrek is one of the most successful Sci-Fi channels...@ one time I was an Operator there...(things change, I still stop by)

While still on IRC, I discovered Sev. If you browse the site, you'll see my name pop up, and if you check out the Sev Message boards, you'll see me there too..

For a while mid last year, I was big into Newsgroups...I was a semi-big participant in rec.arts.tv.mst3k.misc, and alt.games.nintendo.pokemon.....

my big push away from Newsgroups & IRC was the fact that I could only participate @ home...whereas online forums I can participate @ work as well.

=D

Back in late November, I showed up here....you know how well that turned out..

My online life, is my life, I swear, I have no offline life, I'm homeschooled, plus where I live there is nothing to do, no where to go, nothing to see, not really anyone to know, so I basically just live on-line. :D

Morning:Check Mail/ToonZone/TheJawa

Afternoon: Same as Morning (except I usually update TheJawa then)

And on friday nights, I usually do the "Evening" thing till 12am... :D

Yes..I truely don't have much else to do online..

*began on a nowdefunct Daria board caled HELPFUL CORN at the deceased insidetheweb.net server on Nov 1997

*conducted Net relationship with a girl in California in 1998...the long-distance thing is hard to make work but I think if I ever find another girl as interesting as she is I'd do it again, no question!

*gravitated here during grad school through a Pinky and the Brain website, as I recall; started writing reviews as a lark because I just like to gripe and dissect things but found it became quickly my stock in trade

*took hiatus in early 1999 when I left college; began fully concentrating on writing carrer; got home Net connection in Y2K and resumed full-time posting

*trolled a bit at another forum under a different name; was banned (my secret shame)

*first FanFic was "Spring Break in Hell" (Daria); first FanFic at TZ was "Waiting for Go-Boo"

Hmmmm, check my email first thing in the morning, log out. Get home from school, log in, go to TZ, log on AIM, and MSN, check a bunch a boards, go to some different sites. Bottom line, I spend WAY too much time on the net.

Let's see...other than here, i'm usually at anime/video game sites. Y'know, typical internet-geek activities. Minus the porn.

Let's see.....first things I do when I log on: Check mail, check the boards, check webcomics, and chat on AIM all at the same time.

Then sometimes I play Triple Triad, read fanfiction, look for dragon/batman pics, and some miscellanous stuff.

Major multitasking ^^;;;;;

and I used to lurk the WF chat....back when it worked(hint hint)

Oh and I first came on in the summer of '98 looked at a bunch of batman sites and came upon the WB boards and WF in the fall '98

We got internet in 98 and the first thing I did was to look for stuff about Zorro. Somehow I got linked to Delphiforums where they said they had Zorro-chats but I couldn't find it and ended up in a music chat.

I joined Delphi:
Monday, December 21, 1998

Since then I started looking for all kinds of stuff i liked.

The summer of 1999 I realized that I was a Batman fan and lurked at the WF batman board.

I spend my time online with reading my mail, look for stuff i like, gadgets, games and other stuff I want but will never get. Chats message boards, and since getting broadband; DL'ing anime and music...

I used to play online too - I might start again soon.

I spend too much time online, but there isn't much to do around here and I love the ppl I talk to online.

I'm far away from home so the Internet is a blessing for me, cuz now I can talk to my friends back home everyday and even listen to the radiostation i used to listen too back home.

Another thing I forgot to mention- I get all sorts of goodies at Christmas (A lot of cards, and a few presents from generous people) and a couple of presents on my birthday from my online friends. :) Isn't that nice?

Awww, that's so neat NF! Hmm, I think my online life started like in 7th or 8th grade. I have certain anime related and batman/nightwing related sites I always visit. When I had the time I worked on those respective sites of my own everyday. I would research stuff for school, chat with friends and visit the boards. I normally don't get online till the afternoon. First thing I do now is check the boards and post. I talk to whomever I feel like talking to, or whoever is on at the moment. I check out anime and/or batman places, then check the boards once again. Normally, when there are a good amount of people, I'm in the chat that I frequent with certain people at least 4 nights of the week, give or take a night. I do have an offline life, and quite a busy one at that. I love getting on the net though, since my online buddies are different from the offline ones, and there are things I'll only want to talk to them about.

Well, believe it or not I've only consistently been using the internet for about two years now, just after I got out of high school and had a lot more time to do things. I probably have more friends online than I do off, and I've met them all over the place. I own one Yahoo! Group dedicated to the Justice League, and I'm a moderator of the FLHeroes Yahoo! Group, so I make my presence felt there. I'm on a couple other forums, mostly having to do with racing. Yep, I guess that about does it...

I've been on the internet since Spring 2000. Now I AM the master of the web now. There's nothing I don't know about the web.

I love to be on forums. I'm on GameFAQs various boards (they have a board on EVERYTHING), CNX, TZ, newgroups and many many more.

Oh yeah, also, I met my "girlfriend" (I don`t really know if that`s the right word, because we`re already in for the long run but we dont plan on getting married because we find the whole concept kind of meaningless. And it seems to destroy everything. People hate eachother when they get married, no matter what, it seems) on a message board years ago. She lives six hours away in new york but I spent last summer at her house and she`s here right now just for the week. She brought me a plush of Zim, brought down her pet rat (its the cutest thing on earth) and weve been watching b-movies.

Yeah, there's quite a few online relationships at the Cybersix message board (One couple is now engaged, and an online friend of mine lost her.... you know... to her "boyfriend" upon their first meeting). I've got mixed feelings about them, but they seem to work out, for the most part- except for the long distance thing. I don't know- the thing about people online is that you only know them through their online personas. I mean, it's great that you're not being judged by your appearance, but I'm talking in terms of personality- I'm a lot more social, and, well, understandable when I'm on the Internet, for one thing. :P

Don't really do much. Just ceck out email (if I get any), post on various boards,(just joined this one yesterday) check out Fanfiction.net and see if there is anything intersting (useally no), I'm an auther their but I haven't posted a new fic in almost a year. Also surf various anime and cartoon sites. As well as fanart sites. And lurk on fourms. Not much of a poster. I'm a pretty shy person.

I've been on the net for as long as I remeber, but didn't post anything till about a year ago.

I can't pay vary many games or wach videos on the net. My computer is very old and slow.

i'm lucky enough to have an entire extended family web online. (if you caught the jeff foxworthy joke there, i admire you greatly) it all started on the bolt anime board where we worship purple oranges and the chapstick and lipstick lesbians are there to protect everyone's insanity from the namake bots. if you go there, beware the pop-up ads that have forced many of the members to leave bolt and communicate through AIM. speaking of AIM, the chats there can get pretty bad. i think thats where i finally became one of the family...amy and will got married and i am the child of them, heero, and duo. O.o i think at this point, everyone just married everyone else to try and stop confusion. or unwittingly increase it via some diabolical plan they have long since forgotten. i'm not too sure at this point. one person tried to make a family tree and they spontaneously combusted. my brother in the family is the one that got me to come here about three days ago due to some controversy about pilot canidate over on the adult swim forum. oh the joy at being the person called on to b**** at enemies.

My screen name is "SkilledNewbie". AIM or PM me when you want to game, I'd like to. I don't like public games much, and I don't know many people online. So I'm up for it, whenever.
