This is sort of a spin off of "Rude Employee Stories." However, the perspective isn't you as a customer, but you as an employee. Have you ever had moments where your boss was just irrational? Or maybe you had a moment when they did something you were really proud of. I'm sure anyone who has been employed has seen both sides.

I work in a restaurant, and I have to say that 2 out of the 4 managers I currently have aren't all that great. They just seem to be temperamental some of the time (one of them throws things [like forks and one time a glass against the wall] when they are angry!) and let their emotions get the better of them. Granted, they are human so it's not entirely expected of them to make decisions based on logic rather than how they feel.

Anyways, moving along...the schedule for the next week is posted on Thursdays. Due to school my availability has been just Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and it has not changed. However, I had to attend a serving class about three weeks ago because I, well, wanted to become a server. This took place on a Wednesday, which I normally wouldn't be able to work because I have class until 5 and I usually use this as a study day. However, this week when the schedules came out my manager decided to schedule me Tuesday and Wednesday (along with my actual available days). I didn't mind working Tuesday, as I didn't really have any huge homework assignments, but Wednesday was a bit out of the question. If only because I have a test in Psychology the next morning and normally I don't get out until 1 or 2 AM. I immediately brought this up with my manager, explaining that my availability says I can't work during the week, but Tuesday would be fine. She just got really upset with me and starting going off about how "all servers are so unreliable." She then asked, "Didn't you train during a Wednesday?" And I explained that I did, but it was an exception and I hadn't changed my availability.

I was just wondering the whole time...what is the point in having an availability sheet from each employee if you are not going to use it. This seems like a small issue, but this happens with quite a few people and it really has become a large problem within the restaurant. So anyways, she in turn tried to tell me that I was obligated to work that day since I was schedule. So I took this to my head manager and she basically agreed with m entirely and said not worry about it, she would take care of everything. I'll just say right now it is a great feeling to have the one really in charge agrees with you.

I'm sure I have better stories than that one, but this is the most recent and I was pretty upset by it because she really DID go off. I could most likely understand had I gone to her the day before the scheduled day to say something, but I thought I did the right thing mentioning it the day the schedules came out. Perhaps I am wrong.

Now a good moment...and I swear this won't be nearly as long.

In a restaurant, there are three different types of 'Wait,' you can go on...

1) Because there are no empty tables, this is self-explanatory.
2) There are not enough servers.
3) The kitchen has 'crashed,' and they can no longer keep up with the amount of food being ringed in.

Nobody really ever seems to understand the third option, and I suppose that is understandable for those who have never worked in a restaurant. However, this one guy just took things a bit far when he started cussing and yelling at me for telling him that we were on a 5-10 Minute wait. Honestly, 5-10 minutes really is not that long, and I am not even the one who decides whether or not we go on a wait. Perhaps he didn't know this, but it was still uncalled for to get so upset. Thankfully, my head manager came to the rescue and told the man he needed to calm down, or leave. Well...he got even more upset and started just yelling all over the place, saying vulgar things with little kids around, etc...And my manager ended up having him kicked out.

In general this manager is made of win, she is really nice and knows what she is doing. Why she hired the other two...I will never know, but maybe she doesn't do that.

Your turn.

Where I work we're always understaffed. The going story is that our store director gets a bonus whenever we are. So we're supposed to tell customers, as our higher-up do, that people are being hired, and that people are coming in, all the while being told that we're not going fast enough and that we're supposed to keep people happy.

I liked my boss at my last paper, but I heard she got a bonus every year if she kept overtime down. And since we still had to work overtime to meet our ridiculous deadlines that meant we worked all of our overtime in exchange for unpaid "comp" time. That means if you work 8 hours of overtime, instead of getting that 8 hours of time and a half pay you get to sit at home 8 hours the next week and get your regular pay for it. Yeah, that's an even trade.

I hate managers who refuse to hire a person because they have little previous work experience.

Do managers not realize how senseless that is?!

Back in August of 2000, I had been working in a supermarket as a bagger for nearly 13 years when the then-manager said he got a complaint from a customer that one of the baggers had not been practicing good hygiene habits, and he singled me out. He sent me home early. I did not return to work that day [He ultimately was transferred to another store owned by my then-employer's family. He was recently fired for something].

depends if it's an entry level position. Some of it is just HR BS. They don't want to hurt people's feelings so they tell them that they aren't going hire them for something like lack of experience. Although, it might be warranted.

You could rat the company out to OSHA...

As for me, I had 2 bad managers, but I'll just tell about my most recent one. I was working a trial period at a store. I would come in for 1 hour every week. She seemed happy with me, until this previous Thursday. She said I wasn't catching on fast enough because I didn't know all the merchandise or recognize repeat customers. The problem? I only worked 8 hours, which is the equivelant of 1 work day! Of course I wouldn't know all the merchandise or customers!
