View Full Version : Does 3D work on TV?
Is it possible to make single print of the two separate prints needed to make a 3D picture so that one could watch a 3D movie or cartoon on TV and actually have it work? Just curious.
I think it would be neat if CN did that and made a little event of showing 3D cartoons like "Ace Of Space" or "Lumber Jack Rabbit." Too bad they don't have the rights to show UPA stuff, I heard that "The Tell Tale Heart" was made in 3D. It could be like that "Smellovision" event they did a couple years ago, people could send away for the glasses...

a. I doubt it for technical reasons (frequency of the cathode beam)
b. If it were possible, someone would have done by now (and it probaby been just a big a success as smellovision was in the 50's)

Hi. I'm sorta a new member and I'll be making my own page and I'll post a link to it so everyone can know about me. But that'll be later. Right now, the issue of 3D on tv.
Actually, yes, 3D does work on tv. I recall in either the late 80s or very early 90s shows like A Pup Named Scooby Doo (My favorite incarnation of the Scooby series) marketed 3D glassed for use on a particular scene in several episodes. The reason for this is most likely cost, seeing as how it'd be unrealistically expensive to produce an entire show in that format, and there is unfortunately no real interest in seeing a show made that way. (Though there's no real interest in making shows we die-hard fans want to see, anyway. It's a big popularity contest for ratings.)
As for showing older cartoons in the correct format, they'd probably need lots of work done on them to make them viewable in both 3D with the glasses and 2D without the glasses (As the shows and comercials of the 80s were and as I presume they would still be today) and we know for the few cartoons that were originally filmed during the 3D fad hardly any major company will spend that much time reworking films. But one can always hope and complain, I guess.
Thanks and welcome to the board, JaGSQ! I've actually seen a lot of non-movie things in 3D, like cerieal boxes, childrens books, and even an art history book done in 3D. I think it would be neat to see a cartoon in 3D, since I don't know of any local theaters that do that...

Polarized and "red/green" 3-D work on TV.
One episode of 3rd Rock From The Sun used the polorized effect. and it looked fine without glasses.

Also, there was a Diet Coke ad in 3D during halftime of Super Bowl XXIII. I didn't have the glasses, and it looked fine.
And, does anyone know if they air those eps of a Pup Named Scooby Doo on CN? If so, what changes did they make?

When 3D movies enjoyed a brief revival in the early 1980's (anyone remember Comin' At Ya! or Jaws 3D?), one of the local TV stations aired Revenge of the Creature and Gorilla at Large in 3D, distributing the glasses at convenience stores. And Rhino has released Cat Women of the Moon, Robot Monster, and The Mask (1961) on video in 3D

The 3D scenes in A Pup Named Scooby Doo must have been the kind of 3D effects that look fine without glasses, because every scene in every episode is in focus.
