This is tough. There are a lot of great video games, it's truly hard for me to say which one I think is the best. I have a number of favorites.
Well in terms of platforming I'd say
Super Mario Bros, LittleBigPlanet, and Crash Bandicoot.

Well, I wouldn't say I've owned this game for 2 years....but out of all the games that I have, including both console and handheld games, is Pokemon Platinum. Of course I could change my mind within the next year, since I'm waiting for 3 certain games to get for my Wii.:anime:

Psychonauts. It's one of the few modern games I actually played multiple times, all the way through. I love the atmosphere, I love the characters, I love the level design, I love the abilities you get, and even the story is actually pretty good.
This could easily be my favorite game of all time.

Super Mario Bros. 3 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles for me. Nothing comes close to their perfection, IMO.

Wow, that is tough, but I have to agree with the poster above me, SMB 3 definitely should be way at the top. Others I would consider would be Sonic 1 and 2, Super Mario World and Super Mario 64, and Pokemon Red and Blue.
Although if I'm reading the top rule right(is that the game you've played the most?) then it would go to something like Krusty's Fun House, although I don't agree with that being one of the best games of all time.

2 years is a little extreme if you ask me. Not that I really have a problem with it but, I've actually never held onto a game for more than a year (few exceptions), especially now. I have a tendency to trade my games in (regrettably) after I've beaten them. If it's not an rpg, it don't take me more than a week or 2 to beat them. (And I'm not much of a completionist either.)
Anyway, I do still have a few games that I'd say are the best I've ever played.
Shenmue - This was the first game that I've played that had QTE's and, that was the hooking point for me. I like having my reflexes tested. Also, I'm just a sucker for Japanese settings. (And any game that heavily deals with martial arts) Mainly because of the whole samurai-ish nature... I don't know lol. Gameplay, while the camera can get a bit tedious at times I loved the fighting. And then the game gave me a serene feeling. Not many games can calm me down when dealing with stress the way Shenmue does. (Okami comes close but I've never finished.)
Final Fantasy 8 - My very first RPG. (5... Working on buying it yet again.) I've traded this game in as many times as I've played it. I didn't play this for its story. (I don't any rpg for story. I'm slow in the head and won't grasp it until years later.) I played it for its attacks and whatnot. I'm a graphic person so I can't help it lol. Seeing all the pretty magic attacks was a treat. And then the limit breaks themselves was great to see for the first time. The hooking point for this though, was definately Squall himself. His "whatever" attitude at the time to me was great to see because I was going through one of those phases where everybody was pissing me off daily and had to hold back on what I would say. (I had the mouth of a sailor 5-6 years ago lol.)
That's it for now.

Super Mario Bros. 3: Hands down, one of THE single greatest Mario titles ever. Lots of fun levels, tons of secrets, obstacles and hidden stuff, many challenges to explore. Even the irritating levels like Ice Land (World 6) and the Pipe Maze (World 7) could be bypassed with the handy-dandy Warp Whistle. I remember trying endlessly to get through a Koopaling airship without losing my add-on costume so I could get one of the specialized messages from that level's King; I never did it, but my brother did it once with the Tanooki suit.
Mortal Kombat 2: The pinnacle of the MK series, IMO. It introduced Kitana, Kung Lao, Baraka, Mileena and Jax (though this was before he got his metal armed makeover), introduced the Friendships and Babalities and was the first game in which Shang Tsung and Reptile were playable. Again, there was a ton of hidden and unlockable stuff to keep me playing and re-playing this game over and over again. (Did anyone actually play 250 VS matches to unlock Pong?) The Mortal Kombat series peaked with 2 and never achieved this same level of greatness since.
Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest: My personal favorite of the DKC series. Once more, the levels were really fun and challenging and there was a ton of extra goodies to keep me interested even after I had completed the basic game. Plus, the music in DKC2 as awesome sauce. I would only ding DKC2 one point for not being able to play as Donkey Kong; I enjoyed both Diddy and Dixie, but Donkey is the title character of the franchise.
Street Fighter Alpha (Zero) 2: My 2 bros and I just kept playing this title over and over again. (My younger brother had kind of a thing for Sakura at the time.) The gameplay and challenge here were good, but what really sucked me into this title was the backgrounds and music; they were AMAZING. SFA2 was one of the last SF games in which the backgrounds were personalized to each character, and man were they cool. My personal favorites were Ken's, Sodom's and Charlie's. This game featured my all-time favorite orchestrations of Chun-Li's and Zangief's signature music. Plus, SFA2 had visual things like Dhalsim's wife Sally clapping her hands when Dhalsim hit his opponent or turning her head away when Dhalsim himself got hit in his stage or where if a character got hit with a fireball or whatever, their face portrait on the status bar would flame up too; those kinds of subtle nuances show me that the creators care about their work and are having fun, and that's the sort of thing which pulls me in to games.

Two Konami titles come to mind:
Turtles in Time and SunsetRiders (both SNES) - Yes, both of these games were basically "walk to the right while hitting/shooting people" scenarios, but as simplistic as this formula may have been, it worked. My brothers and I would while away many a Summer afternoon playing these 2 games, despite the fact that we've beaten them many, many times before. Also, the music in both of these games was cool. They were just plain fun to play.
Also, Marvel Super Heroes (Arcade and Playstation) - This game doesn't get much love from fans, as it's usually ignored and/or overlooked in favor of later Capcom fighters such as X-Men VS Street Fighter, Marvel VS Capcom and Marvel VS Capcom 2, but don't laugh when I say that MSH is on of my all time favorite video games. The graphics were top notch (for it's time) and the gameplay was solid. The characters were fairly evenly matched, the Infinity Moves were cool, and the addition of the Infinity Gems was such a great innovation that I'm truly surprised that it was never repeated. My only nitpick with MSH was with the casting. I wish that Thor had been playable and I personally would have taken Storm and Phoenix over Blackheart and Shuma Gorath, but those complaints are minor. Marvel Super Heroes was just plain fun to play. I actually purchased a Playstation for the purpose of playing MSH at home.

Ninja Gaiden Black- Honestly, I am still amazed at how much this game impresses me to this day, even now when its 4 years old. Its easily my favorite action game of all time, and that has a lot to do with how extremely well polished it is. Aside from looking and playing absolutely amazing for a game on the original XBOX (you can tell that it seriouslly pushes that hardware to its limits), its probably one of the only few games that I've actually found to have such a high re-play value, that I actually have had more fun playing its higher difficulties than just being able to breeze through without too much frustration on normal mode. This game is 100% skill based, and I guess the reason that I like it so much is because it always just felt so rewarding to me whenever I ended up getting good enough to beat a part that I had felt was nearly impossible to overcome, at an earlier point in the game.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time- Yeah, yeah, I know that everyone else over here will just say that its overrated and outdated, but I don't care what other people say. I personally still find this game to be just as fun as it ever was, even to this day, and before anyone asks me why I'm not listing Twilight Princess as one of my favorite Zelda games, I'll just go ahead and answer that I still have yet to play it (but, believe me, I REALLy want to ;) ).
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island- Out of all of the platformers that I have played on the SNES, this one is by far my favorite. I found its concept and execution to be so unique when I first played it, and I really enjoyed its creative boss fights, especially when compared to most other Mario games. I also discovered how much fun it could truly be to play as Yoshi as opposed to just playing as Mario or Luigi as usual. This is also one of those rare games in which there isn't a single level that I disliked. I mean, even in games that I love, there are at least 1 or 2 levels that I downright hate (like in the first 2 DKC games), but no matter how much I try, I can find very little to complain about when it comes to this game. In fact, my only real gripe with it is baby Mario's annoying crying sound that the player is forced to endure whenever he gets knocked off of Yoshi, until you get him back. :p

Well, gotta go with my Top 2.
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Hands down, OoT, revolutionized 3D adventure games if not gaming in general in a way SM64 had done before it but in a much different way. You literally felt like you were Link in one of the most epic adventures in video gaming to date in my honest opinion. From the timeleap, to the dungeons, to the final showdown with Ganon; this is it, the Greatest game.. of all time.
My runner-up and a game everyone should play, even if horror games aren't their thing.
Resident Evil 4
By far, it change the face of survival horror.
And yes, to me RE4, is STILL classified as a Survival Horror game.
From the pacing and the mood of game, everything felt right.
I could go into more detail but there's enough praise already.

Deja Vu (NES) - I've owned this game for about 5 years now and before that a friend of mine owned it for about 10 years, so I've played it quite a few times.
I still remember that when my friend and I first tried to play the game we couldn't figure out how to "solve" the mystery, and how everytime that we went to the cops we were arrested.
I finally figured out where we were going wrong after writing a letter to the Nintendo counsellors about 8 years after my friend and I first started playing the game. And to this day I still love the "mystery novel" approach that the creators took to the game and I still have not been able to find another mystery/detective game that comes near to the level of Deja Vu. The Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys: The Hidden Theft games are the closest to getting this type of storytelling, but they are not quite close enough.

Lost Odyssey
Microsoft's Game X Studios & Mistwalker
Microsoft's first push into the major RPG genre. ME, ME2, Too Human etc... they don't con't. But Lost Odyssey, it had everything that was in a FF series
emotional storyline
great FMV scenes
battle system
---
Final Fantasy IX
SQUARE EA
Sorry Cloud and Squal fans, but this was my most fav FF of PSOne. It had a really emtional storyline.

Half-Life - Epic gameplay; even as good as the sequel is this is still the better game.
X-Com - Play it: the gameplay still stands up just as well as it did when it first came out.
Baldur's Gate Bhaal Spawn series - The games (well along with the original Fall-out games) that all PC/Western-style RPGs are held to the standard of and rightfully so.
Civilizations series - Endless hours of entertainment; most say II is the best but I actually prefer the interface refinements in IV.
Honorable Mention: Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri - Sci-Fi Civ.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2: Many will put Sonic 3 & Knuckles above it, but Sonic 2 had more charm for me than 3&K ever had. The level designs flowed, and were fun to go through. It mixed up exploration and speed quite nicely. And, of course the introduction of Super Sonic. And, playing as two player at once for the first time is pretty neat, as well. But, all in all, I pretty much had more fun with this one than 3&K.
Super Mario Galaxy: For a 3D platformer, it got everything right for me. The art direction, the music, level design, etc. I literally couldn't put the darn Wiimote down. It was a step up from Super Mario Sunshine, and honestly, even Mario 64 (...though I have to say...I never really finished that one :(). The retro powerups were a fun edition, too. It was one of the first games to use the Wii to its fullest (...or at least for what I played at the time).
That's all I could think of at the moment.
EDIT: Didn't read....these are the only ones that come close to two years. :(

Most of these appear to be console games, so I guess I'll try to balance it out:
Ultima VII: One of the first sandbox RPGs that included numerous side tasks and plots in addition to the main storyline. The best part was finding all the hidden treasure, bugs, and cheats.
X-Wing and TIE Fighter Series: The two series were some of the best space sims of their time with dozens of missions and integrated voice acting. The iMuse music system changed the pacing and tone of background music to match mission events; that was a nice touch.

Well, for PC Games, I guess my Top 5 "Best Video Games" would have to be:
1. Star Trek Voyager Elite Force
2. Nancy Drew: Last Train To Blue Moon Canyon
3. The Godfather 2
4. Star Trek Elite Force 2
5. Star Trek Armada 2

Golden Sun for the GBA.
I first got this game back when I was 13, as an Easter present, and although I hadn't been much of an RPG fangirl at that point, this game made me become one.
The graphics and music, to start off, are fantabulous and beautiful. The characters are just as interesting as the introcate, greatly detailed plot within the game itself, and I never honestly had one single boring moment while playing it. The use of olden, medieval age themes mixed in with mythology and magic and alchemy never got dull, that's for sure.
It's one of those games you can seriously engross yourself in and almost feel like you're actually a member of the group you're controlling, walking around with them. It's been my favorite game for going on 9 years now, so yeah, I give this my vote as the best game evar.
Also worth noting is it's sequel, The Lost Age, as it was fun and engrossing too. Then of course there's a Golden Sun DS title coming out fairly soon I do believe, the latter two definitely worth checking out and playing, and I expect the DS one will be as well.

All of this is why I like SMB3 best out of any Mario game.
Also, when it comes to the Pokémon games, I like G/S/C and R/S best, both for the new 'mons they offer and for the cleaner graphics compared to R/Y/B. Something about G/S/C and R/S just makes both games feel "darker" than the first generation of Pokémon games (especially R/S), and I like that feel — not to mention all the special abilities that many of the 'mons now have. I don't have a DS, so I've yet to play D/P.

I actually have a few:
Final Fantasy 6-This game has been extremely underrated compared to 7 but this game was the swan song of the classic FF era and it was epic. The number of characters was just overwhelming for a FF game and the fact that the game kept up with everyones individual stories was a mastery of RPG storytelling. The score was the SNES at it's best and a lot of memorable themes came from this game. The melancholy atmosphere of the game I think in many places out angsts 7. I think behind 7 and possibly 8 or 4 or 10 this cast was the most memorable.
Final Fantasy 7-I still have to give this games it props. Killing off a main character. The Eva-esque atmosphere and the legacy establish. While I do like 8-10, and 12...I guess this game set a bar that all of the sequels have yet to top.
Super Mario Galaxy-I would pick Mario 3 or Mario 64 but this game took the elements of both those games added a lot of original concepts and spun it into something just freakin' EPIC!!! This is the definitive Mario game and a worthy addition into any Mario fans collection.
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past-Much like how FF6 was a send-off to the classic FF era this game was that for the Zelda series. Introducing the concepts of dark worlds (which came through in spades in Twilight Princess) and one of the more compelling storylines in the Zelda series. (It also happens to be the only major Zelda game I played all the way through).
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarnia of Time- Bringing Zelda into the 3-D era what makes this game so awesome is it takes the aging Link concept from the first two games and makes it a major plot point in this game. The scope of Hyrule just became expansive and fully realized the concept of exploration that Miyamoto used to pioneer the series.

"Thank you, kind raccoon. Please tell me your name."
Yep, that was the one. I saw that message one time in real life, outside of a game magazine. :)
FTR, the other special messages were:
Frog Suit: "Oh me, oh my. You've been transformed! Shall I change you back with this wand?"
Hammer Bros. Suit: "Hey, you. How about lending me your clothes? No dice? What a drag."
Super Mario World is actually much better than Super Mario 3, IMO. It introduced my favourite character, Yoshi, and the level design was a huge step up from the somewhat-bland SMB3. "Outrageous" in the Special World is my favourite level in SMW.
Super Mario Bros. 2 is highly underrated too... not the original Japanese one, the Doki Doki Panic one. Sure, it doesn't fit the Mario canon, but a lot of the characters from SMB2 have actually entered the Mario canon, like Shy Guys, Pidgets, Birdo and Wart. It was a lot of fun to play and had possibly the best level design out of all the early games. I also enjoyed having my choice of which character to play, which has always been sorely lacking in most of the traditional games.
Outside of the Mario series, I greatly enjoyed all Madden games pre-2007. This was back in the era when EA actually had competition and committed themselves to putting out a good product, and it showed. Football games have never been better than this era of Madden. I still play the newer versions of Madden but I don't get nearly the same level of enjoyment as the earlier ones.
MVP Baseball 2005, however, is the pinnacle of all sports games. I remember leading the Devil Rays to a World Series sweep of (who else?) the Mets. It sticks out in my mind due to the realism of the game and just how many options I had. A few well-placed and fair trades and I was a contender. You don't get any better than that.

Well...three of those games are because I'm a Star Trek Fan.
The Nancy Drew game...I'm a Hardy Boys Fan and the Hardy Boys appear in the game.
As for The Godfather 2...I like the Wii The Godfather Blackhand Edition, and it is unfortunate that EA is not making a port of The Godfather 2 for the Wii.

It has probably been mentioned already, but I pick "the Legend of Zelda: the Ocarina of Time", no contest. I love the graphics, the characters, the storyline, the music, the dungeons and the other places (Hyrule Castle, Zora's Domain, Death Mountain Crater, etc), everything. Now, I love a majority of the Zelda games, but this is my favorite of the series, and without a doubt my most favorite video game of all-time. One thing I especially love about it is that even though you are playing a video game, you feel like you are in it, it is that charismatic, and it is not boring for a brief moment. Yes, no game is perfect, but its faults are trivial to anything else.
I also nominate "Super Mario 64", that is my most favorite video game of all-time either, and my most favorite of the Mario game series. I love it for the same reasons, but I do not like the plot that much though. I love what you can do it, such as go into paintings for certain objectives. It is awesome, no doubt.
