View Full Version : Hidden "Inappropriate" Content in Cartoons
Well, I've heard of F-bombs and whatnot being hidden in "Whatever Happened to Robot Jones?" but I never noticed it myself.
Also, I was watching a Code Lyoko episode, and was curious about what was in this image:
http://img.codelyoko.fr/galeries/48_esprit_frappeur/Esprit_frappeur_007.jpg
So, I googled it. I thought it was a French word... But apparently, it's a slang term for marijuana.
It could be coincidental, I don't know.

It could have just meant the paper had an anti-drug ad on the back (I don't know but they could be common in French papers).

Just go watch a Bob Clampett cartoon. You'll find plenty.
I remember 2 instances in He-Man's original cartoon that made me say, "WTF". I was watching it with a friend a few years ago over some chinese food and there was a scene where the guy with the interchangable eyes had He-Man in a full nelson headlock and both men were grunting loudly and it sounded erotic, then He-Man said........."It's time for me to GET YOU OFF!" and they were swaying in a motion that looked......questionable, if you know what I mean. Then in another episode of He-Man the crew of bad guys who were led by Skeletor were trying to get into Greyskull but were met at the gates by He-Man and company, when Skeletor complained about being caught He-Man went ahead and said, "Next time why don't you slip into my BACK DOOR Skeletor!". I spit out my drink to say the least......

apparently there was an old looney toons episode where the grandmother from the sylvester and tweety segments was putting on hats and becoming different historical figures in front of a mirror. She'd become Lincoln and say something like "4 score and 7 years ago..." then she puts on a washington hat and go "i can not tell a lie" and then she put on a napoleon bonaparte (sp?) and said "not tonight dear" because apparently he was impotent.

:D Rewatching Beast Wars, I found Black Arachnia to be veeeeeeeery inappropriate.
Examples include
Her flirting sequence with the Waspinator possessed Star Scream, and allowing his advances.
Taking a unreasonable long time to tell Tarantulas to get off the top of her when they were blown back by an explosion. I think she said something along the lines of "Fun's over."
And don't forget Airazor when she was kneeling at Optimus' feet, rubbing his inner thigh...A very memorable scene. :D

In the Dexter's Lab episode where he and Dee Dee had decoder rings, Dee Dee said something like "Your club is of K-D-I-C's" (anagram for "dick").
Also in that episode where she was going to get a tatoo, there was a had flipping the bird on the wall. Go look up "Getting Crap Past the Radar" on TV Tropes. I think there was a picture. The censors must of caught it because I have a recording of that episode from 2005 and its not there.

Another Beast Wars example:
Upon his return from a patrol with Blackarachnia, Silverbolt is questioned by Rattrap:
"Find any new positions?"
or words to that effect
But seriously, anyone who is trying hard enough to dig up questionable content will find it in anything. What they find often says more about the one doing the looking than what they're looking at.

In Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs:
- Sid tries to milk a yak, then the yak makes a face, and is then seen chasing Sid, who is saying "I thought you were a female!"
- Diego and Manny are being pressed up against each other, when Diego says, "I feel all tingly!" Manny says, "Don't say that when you're pressed up against me!" "Not that kind of tingly!"
- Buck says (referring to a rainbow-colored butterfly) "I knew him when he was a caterpillar, before he 'came out'!"
- He also mentioned the time he turned a T-Rex into a T-Rachel.
- When a baby is born, Sid says, "It's a boy!" to which Diego replies "That's a tail!"

There's another one. The one where Schnitzel and Chowder make a delivery to that guy that lives on top of a giant. While they're scaling the Giant, and they're near his waist line, they both notice crabs, Chowder asks where they come from, while Schnitzel said "You don't want to know" in his Radda Radda talk. In one of the last episodes of the 1987 Ninja Turtles mini-series, Bebop and Rocksteady are trapped in a zoo cage, and one of them calls April "You little bimbo!" I never noticed it until watching it at a friend's house a few years ago, and we both started laughing. We had to rewind the tape to make sure we'd heard it right. Haha!!
Anamaniacs had a whole bunch.
The one I always remember the most is where they sing a song about a particular lake (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_Titicaca) on the border of Peru and Bolivia. I saw that with a friend at his apartment one day after school, and when his older sister heard it she was like, "Are they singing what I think they're singing?" :D I think it was obvious the only reason they did that song was because they could get away with it, being that it was the lake's real name after all. LOL!!!
The entire Powerpuff Girl's episode featuring Dick Hardly.
Though I suppose the inappropriate content in that episode wasn't exactly hidden. I mean GEEZ, how did ANY of that stuff fly past the censors?

I can't think of any quotes off the top of my head but Fairly OddParents has a lot, the Total Drama series as well. And then there is Spongebob.
Chocolate With Nuts
Spongebob: (Reading Billboard) Eat Barnacle Chips, They're Delicious!
Spongebob: They are most certainly not delicious!
Patrick: Not the way I use them.
Spongebob: Patrick, we need a new approach. A new tactic.
Patrick: I've got it, let's get naked!
Spongebob: No, let's save that for when we're selling real estate.
Sailor Mouth
Spongebob: Hey Patrick! How the *Dolphin Noise* are ya?
Patrick: Pretty *Dolphin Noise* good Spongebob!
Your Shoe's Untied
(Spongebob is watching a show with some sort of weird dancing plant and Gary comes in the room)

Speaking of Rocko, I'm surprised one particular thing hasn't been brought up yet. The name of the fast food restaurant was called "The Chokey Chicken." Nick did eventually notice the joke behind the name, and later episodes changed the name to "The Chewey Chicken."
Like others have mentioned, Animaniacs also had a few such as:

Yakko: "What? I've never even kissed a girl!"
Beethoven: "I am a pianist!"
Yakko: "Looks like someone needs their mouth washed with soup!"

Since you mentioned PPGs, there's the infamous 'You'll need one of these' scene where Bubbles slips something into the Professor's pocket when he's going on a date. Cut from every other showing of the ep.
Slightly older, on Road Rovers, they did the Russian Naming Song...basically an excuse to get 'Sonyonovitch' on the air. Again, cut after one airing.

Earlier someone mentioned Rocko's Modern Life. Of course, the amount of "inappropriate" stuff that they've managed to slip past the censors could fill an entire thread by itself, but one short sticks out in my mind: "Closet Clown". I'm surprised Joe Murray managed to get that story on the air; it wasn't until I got older that I noticed how overtly they were using being a clown as a mirror metaphor for homosexuality.
From the beginning, with Ed Bighead's initial prejudice against clowns ("We don't like your kind here, with your big floppy feet, and..."), then his secret desire to be a clown himself, then when his boss Mr. Dupette finds out and reveals that he himself is also a clown ("Don't tell me you haven't gone public yet?....If this is part of you, Bighead, you're going to have to accept it sometime; it might as well be now!"), then finally to the end of the short, when everyone else begins confessing secrets about themselves, Rocko confides that he's always liked rainbows*, and everyone else is shocked and outraged and chase him out the trailer park with pitchforks.

The amount of content they got away with on Rocko's Modern Life was astounding and I still ponder to this day how they were allowed to, all I can think is that back in the mid 90's, Nickelodeon was a lot more laid back in terms of content, especially considering they were too busy making sure Ren & Stimpy was clean enough since that series was a lot more in your face with their adult content and where as Rocko was a more about hidden/double entendres.
It's strange to see how uptight Nick has gotten ever since the 2000's about this kind of sly adult humor. Ren & Stimpy, Rocko's Modern Life, and The Angry Beavers were all full of the kind of humor that kids would never bat an eye at but adults would revel in.
And Rocky & Bullwinkle was one of the most groundbreaking animated series in history, showing that adults could genuinely enjoy a cartoon long before The Flintstones or The Simpsons came out.

Jumping back into this thread reminded me of one instance in Justice League. It was the episode where John lost his ability to operate his Green Lantern ring after a fight with Despero & Katma suggests is retraining him to use it. He disagrees at first and then Katma says something to the effect of:

That one is pure gold, because it's not only a "getting crap past the radar" moment, but it's also a genuenly clever joke. A lot of the other jokes that people point out in this thread might be funny, but they are often only funny because of the "oh my God, did they actually put that one into a childrens show?"-aspect of it. Like, imagine if the jokes mentioned in this thread had come from an adult cartoon like South Park or Family Guy, in other words shows that are completely allowed and expected to have stuff like that in them. Many of the jokes don't seem as funny then, do they?

Green Lantern says "Kiss my ax" in a Justice League episode (can't remember the name). Then again, it aimed for an older demographic.
In the Powerpuff Girls episode "Super Friends", Robin tells Professor Utonium that she was an accident, too (Professor's face...)
A Rugrats episode featured Angelica's love of cookies as an addiction. It ends with her eating several cookies that have fallen into a soapy bowl of water.

You were probably watching A! on Nicktoons TV, where the line was always cut. Here's the uncensored version:
"This Pun for Hire" - a parody of The Maltese Falcon about a Maltese Pigeon that looks like Squit from The Goodfeathers.
Hello Nurse: Give me the bird!
Dot: We can't, this is a kids' show.
Interestingly, this gag was used earlier in one of the FOX episodes, "Turkey Jerky":
Miles Standish: (who is hunting the Warners' pet turkey) Giveth me the bird!
Yakko: We'd like to, really, but the FOX censors wouldn't allow it!

This gag is older than you think. I remember being it used in the 1942 Bob Clampett cartoon A Tale of Two Kitties, where two Abbott and Costello-esque cats are trying to catch Tweety.
Babbit: Give me the bird!
Catstello: (to camera) If da Hays Office would only let me... I'd give him 'da boid' all right"

I remember "A Tale of Two Kitties" with Babbit and Catsello, and you're right, that gag has been around for a long time. I guess comedians have been fighting with the censors for decades. ;)

From Dragonball Z (Dub)
Frieza (after Captain Ginyu gives him the Dragonballs): Having these balls makes me feel something that resembles joy, I think. I want to caress them.
That sounds so wrong.

Thank god FUNi improve a lot after the Frieza saga.
Man, for the first 2 season of DBZ FUNi Dub, man. That was bad.

The SpongeBob episode "Hooked" was one huge innuendo, and it took me until now to realize it. Think about it..
-"Hooked" is a slang term for "addiction", as in drugs.
- Spongebob and Patrick got "high" ---in the air, that is, when riding on the hooks.
-Patrick kept pressuring Spongebob to play "hooky"
-Mr Krabs didn't want Spongebob and Patrick to go on the hooks and fired Spongebob when he did get hooked.
When I realized all of those undertones, I smacked myself on the forehead. :p

I always thought that the joke was that hooky means ditching, but the episode actually used hooks. I guess I'm just not that deep.
One Animaniacs episode
Yakko: I got the beans
Wakko: I got the franks
Dot: I got the buns!
Teacher: I'll conjugate with you
Yakko: Goodnight everybody
The Batman
Batman: Joker just needed a an opportunity to get to somebody in her position (Talking about Harley after getting fired from her talk show)
Batgirl: Next batman discovers the fruedian implication's of Penguin's umbrella.
and one Rugrat's episode
Phil: A kid should be out with his friends not in the house boppin his boppo

Like others have said, Rocko's Modern Life has enough to be its own thread. I never understood what the whole deal with Closet Clown (especially the ending) was until high school.
It took me a long while to figure out the meaning behind the name "Chokey Chicken"--and why it was changed to "Chewy Chicken" in its fourth season.

In The Powerpuff Girls, when the Professor is going on a date, the girls are putting on his tie, flower, cologne, and so on. Then, Buttercup puts something in his pocket, but you don't see what it is. She describes it as "And some of these!". Would that be condoms?

In the I Am Weasel episode "A Tree Story", all the trees are having a meeting to discuss the abuse they've suffered at the hands of people.
Leader: The chair recognizes the birch.
Birch: Well, actually, my son wanted to say something.
Leader: All right, the chair recognizes the son of a birch.
Its sister series Cow and Chicken had a lot of gender confusion humor as well.
One episode had Cow and Chicken's dad at the mall shopping for their mom...from buying new dresses to getting a pedicure.
Another episode had the Red Guy at the supermarket buying several packs of pantyhose...which it turned out were to filter his coffee.

One I just saw on, of all places, the What's New Scooby Doo? Halloween Special. A blonde girl is making time with and hitting on Fred the whole episode and at one point she tells him it's her birthday.

Another running gag in Cow and Chicken involves Cow's favorite dolls - Piles the Beaver, Crabs the Warthog and Manure the Bear.
Every so often one of the characters mentions one of her dolls, briefly pausing after saying the first word of its name.
For example, in "The King and Queen of Cheese":
Chicken: COW! WAIT! I'VE GOT CRABS...THE WARTHOG!!
And again in Night of the Ed, featuring the new family pet, Ed the runaway rabid jackal:
Cow: It's upstairs! HE COULD BE EATING MY MANURE!
Chicken: The Bear doll!
