Okay, I admit that most FG threads on this forum lead to flame wars, so please, let this be a SERIOUS thread. I do not know if a similar thread already exists.
This is an all-purpose thread for anyone to ask "Who's THAT character supposed to be?" or "What's THAT all about?" when they don't comprehend some of the humour in FG. Hopefully someone who knows will clarify the reference. I will later use the information from this thread to create an online encyclopedia designed to preserve today's contemporary humour for future generations. Details of the project can be found HERE (http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?t=234765).

Of what little of the show I've seen, there isn't much I don't comprehend (except that $100 million thing), but I find the show funny about 20% of the time.

As I've said before, I never understood why Lois or Peter are always telling Chris to go to his room. Usually they tell him to go to his room when he hasn't even done ANYTHING wrong. What am I not getting here???

As far as Chris going to his room for nothing, it really just makes a joke of Peter and Lois being incompetent parents most of the time. They get rid of him because they can and there's probably real parents who do the same. :p

I'm guessing this had a lot to do with "the evil monkey who lives in my room".

Nah, nobody else believes that Chris has an evil monkey in his closet.
Like I said before, it's just a running gag and a sign of Peter and Lois' slack parenting. Parents send their kids to their rooms all the time for stupid and pointless reasons, plus, as I've pointed out before, in early episodes they've sent Meg to her room as well, so it's not like they're just picking on Chris. I think you guys are just reading too much into a light gag.

Remember that one scene where Brian and Stewie are playing this game? (I can't remember which one) Near the end, Brian tells Stewie to yell "Yahtzee", which Stewie does, then yells "HEY!" at Brian.
What's up with that?

The game was called... wait for it... "Yahtzee".
The joke I didn't get was this cutaway where a rebel pilot tells Luke Skywalker off for bragging about shooting womp rats. Afterwards, Luke just sort of shrugs while funny music plays in the background. I KNOW that's a reference to something, but I have no idea what.

Brian was explaining the game to Stewie. He told Stewie that when you win, you're supposed to shout "Yahtzee!" and Brian claimed that he and Stewie were going to shout it together, but it when it came time to do so, Brian didn't join him, so when Stewie yelled "YAHTZEE!" all by himself, Brian called him "Gay". Naturally, Stewie was ticked at Brian for doing that.

The only FG gag I have never gotten is the one in "Live and Die in Dixie" where Peter says he feels lower than a bow-legged caterpillar and some guy chuckles and says "Now here's Roy".
I don't watch country stuff, so that could be why.

I could be wrong, but I believe that would be a reference to Hee Haw (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hee_Haw) (the "Roy" in question being co-host Roy Clark).

It was a reference to Hee Haw, which was co-hosted by Roy Clark and Buck Owens. The guy who says "Now here's Roy" was a caricature of Owens.

Correct me if I am wrong, but the scene preceding Conway Twitty's first FG appearance in Bill and Peter's Bogus Journey ("If he wanted a pig, why couldn't he just have my wife?") is also a Hee Haw reference? Who's the character saying that line supposed to be a caricature of?

Here are two references I don't get:
-In one ep, Stewie talks about how interesting Jesus was and how he would have liked to meet him, and we cut to a very odd scene of Stewie walking in on Jesus as he's slowly and sedictively saoping himself up in a wooden bathtub. I think this may be a reference to Witness (Harrison Ford and Kelly McGillis), but I'm not sure.
-In the ep where Stewie gets a tan, there's a bit where he says to Brian "Hey, check this out...!", and then he drinks from a can of Tab(?) and then turns to the camera and smiles in slow motion. I'm assuming this is from some 80's TV commercial, but who is Stewie supposed to be?

Yeah, but is Stewie supposed to be someone in particular? I'm thinking George Hamilton because of the tan.

One gag I never get is this:
In a recent episode, Connie DiMicco is having dinner at the Griffins' house, and during the conversation, she mentions that her father passed away 4 years ago, then Peter laughs at this. In another episode, Jillian mentions at different times that her mother died of cancer and that her father is also dead. On both occasions, Peter laughs in response. Why does Peter find the fact that these girls have dead parents to be funny? Am I missing something here?

The Jawas in the Blue Harvest episode were passing Grey Poupon to each other with classical music playing in the background. Was that from an 80s commerical?
There's a scene in one episode with Stewie dressed up as a cruise ship captain and dancing with women in swimsuits as funky music plays and they chase each other around the house.

IIRC, the basic idea of the joke was that if Kurt Cobain hadn't committed suicide, no one would know who his girlfriend Courtney Love is. When Kurt introduced Love to his friend, the friend responded with "Who?", then Courtney looks annoyed. I guess that the writers were suggesting that Courtney Love is only famous for being Cobain's widow, but I could be wrong about that.

According to urbandictionary
That annoying guy that always talks about how cool he is, how tough he is, and acts like he is better than everyone. He tries to start **** with people and be a complete dork - usually unknowingly since he doesn't catch the fact that he's making a fool out of himself.
Basically the joke it about guys who know about 4 chords on the guitar, think they can write a song about nothing and somehow women will find them attractive because they think they have feelings and can play an instrument, not to mention the "College" version is the kind of guy who will drink an entire bottle Jack Daniels, Crown Royal, or other high end alcohol and save the damn empty bottle & put it on display for everyone else to see, also the College version sometimes like to put their speakers from their stereo in their window because the ENTIRE REST OF THE WORLD just HAAAASSSSS to listen to this SUM41 song.

I could be wrong, but I think it was because that was an easy way to reference the "Evil Monkey" in Chris' closet as being a reason he did not want to go to his room. I often felt a lot of the humor in Family Guy falls into the Gen-X trappings that got the show recognized in the first place. Most people in their 30's and 40's would know these things in a heartbeat, leaving the younger audience in the dust and being clueless unless they don't ask about it such as here.

Not exactly. Chris has referenced the evil monkey without being told to go to his room, and there have been "go to your room" jokes which don't involve the evil monkey at all. Plus, I keep mentioning this but no one ever acknowledges it, in some of the earlier episodes, Peter and/or Lois have told Meg to go to her room too. (To name just one example: in "Death is a 'B'-Word", Peter thinks he's dying and tells his kids to look back and remember all of his accomplishments. Meg asks "What accomplishments?", to which Peter responds by telling Meg "Go to your room.")
I'm continually amazed by the amount of confusion this particular gag has generated; so nobody here has ever been sent to their room by their parents as a kid for some pointless reason or seemingly no reason? That's just generic family stuff, like being told to "Eat your greens".
"I didn't say that, Lee Majors did!" "What?, women are things."
The joke there is that both Peter and Lee Majors are sexist pigs.

There's a really weird bit where they're in a helicopter that just crashed and is slaloming down the side of a mountain, and they're both screaming and Brian looks over and suddenly Stewie is dressed in a red devil costume (replete with fangs) and is laughing maniacally.
 "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles", only in that movie's case, it was John Candy and Steve Martin's car going between two semis while driving on the wrong side of the highway. And I thought I identified this for you before.

Ah. And I think the Planes scene you identified for me earlier was Peter reciting a John Candy speech from that film verbatim in a different episode.

I'm just not really familiar with Lee Majors is all :PGuess if I say Stevie Austin, you'll think of only the wrestler by that name rather than the character Lee Majors played on The Six Million Dollar Man (a character which was somewhat parodied on an episode of The Venture Brothers wearing his trademark red jumpsuit). You probably never seen The Fall Guy either.
Okay. Grandpa Max in the first live-action Ben 10 movie. That's Lee Majors.

I've actually never seen any of those, sadly. Does that make me a terrible person?
I'm not too sad about not having seen the live action Ben 10 movie tho :p

I turned on an episode a few days ago that had Peter listening to the song Surfin' Bird over and over. Stewie and Brian steal the record and destroy it in a slow motion sequence. It was probably refrencing something, but I don't know what.

It's a scene from Office Space(1999). In the film, several co-workers get angered at a copy machine that keeps jamming and just plain doesn't work, and they take it from their workspace and beat it to death with baseball bats, with the same song in the background.

In the beginning of The Cleveland Show pilot episode Peter says "Cleveland Jr. aged faster than Kathleen Turner." we then see a cutway with Turner talking to her manager (I think) and she has gotten a leading role in a movie. "The Babe". Then she just hits a baseball and that's it.
I don't get it.

They currently show a commercial with Lee Majors selling a bionic hearing aid on late night cable television. The tagline is "It won't cost you 6 million dollars, but you'll think it's worth it."

In the 80s, Turner was a stunning woman who specialized in playing femme fatales or 'babes' (Body Heat, for example). Over the years, she got...shall we say, heavier. Her manager meant the Babe as in baseball legend Babe Ruth.

Two come to mind:
A cutaway where Peter is in a class, refuses to take a test, and throws the test at the instructor. The intructor says "Congratulations. That was the test" with Peter running out of the classroom with some song playing. What's the reference?
In the episode where they show a flashback to Nate Griffin coming to America: The captain is asleep and wakes up on his own raft made of logs and falls into the water. A song is playing about having a great summer. What's the reference?

It's from the 1979 Summer camp movie Meatballs.

Uncle Sam's nipples.
Someone explain to me how this is funny.
This isn't a troll on the show, I'm genuinely curious as to how this is a joke.
I'm guessing it's a jab at being abnormal. I've heard people making fun of this thing before on other television shows.

The song is "I'm Free" by Kenny Loggins. I don't what the reference is aimed at. I kind of figured it might be Footloose or something (haven't seen the movie in decades).

Family Guy relies on a lot of current stuff too, with a lot of 90's movies. That's Robot Chicken you're thinking of, my friend.

How about from a circa 2001 Family Guy episode:
Peter checks his e-mail on his internet computer...
PETER: "Oh boy, I got an e-mail from Mr. Pewterschmidt!"
...then a fist comes out of the computer screen and punches/hits Peter.

lol it should be obvious by now that Peweterschmidt hates Peter.

I think he's talking about how is that actually possible that he was able to punch Peter through the computer. That's just one of those "cartoon gags that can't be explained but are funny anyway". Bonus Stage and Ed Edd n Eddy have done similar gags as well just for the "lulz".

ah I should have included that part pff. Some people just expect a lot of FM jokes to be referenced, when many are specific toward the show and are just random.

"Look, Chris, it's a family of wasps."
WASPs refers to White Anglo-Saxon Protestant. It's use to called people of elite background, social status, and presumed power that they hold. They're mostly upper class, practice the Protestant religion, are well-educated, and usually comes from the background of English, Scottish, or Welsh descent.

It makes fun of people who would actually shout "Yahtzee!" when winning the game.

Here's one from an episode tonight:
New Brian asks Lois to sing karaoke with him, she goes to and says something like "Okay everybody, Rita Coolidge's less talented sister here!" Even Stewie replies with "In what way is that a joke?" I haven't really tried to look anything up yet. I guess I was wondering if any of you guys get it.

I recall this joke being made, but I can't remember exactly which episode it was in, maybe the quote itself can spark it for you!
I think it's the one where they're applying Meg to Brown so she could get into a good college and then they speak to the Dean or something like that...I think it's the Luke Perry episode.
"Meg? It's just three letters. It's HARDLY a name at all."
"Well yeah, I wanted to name her Twiki but Lois said kids wouldn't get the reference."
He's right, I sure don't.

I'm sure it was Twiki, I remember there being a K-sound, and also because it just seems more....Peter-ish if he went for the more obnoxious choice than a simple bash at a celebrity.

I think the joke is that Lois was comparing her singing skills to Rita Coolidge (a singer from the 1970s and 80s who did adult contemporary), by using her as measure of coolness like an unhip relative would, etc.
That's all there is to it, I guess.

After all, he give Chris the middle name Cross (as in 1980's singer Christopher Cross) and Stewie the middle name Gilligan.
