I saw these in happy meal toys, and it got me remembering them. When I was little, there were only Samantha, Molly, Kirsten, and Felicity (but the library books didn't have Felicity because she was new). I was kinda bummed when my niece told me they quit making Samantha, I liked her stories.
I was too poor to have an actual doll, though. $100 was too much for a toy. I wanted Felicity or Josefina. Any of you other girls (guys?) remember having these?

I have an American Girl doll from two christmases ago and two books: Meet Julie and Meet Chrissa: Girl of the year: 2009. A former friend of mine has a Josafina book. Pretty much next summer I'll try to go to Dallas next summer and try to go to one of there stores. I hate how they stopped making Samantha. She was so orginal.....:crying:

My best friend had a bunch when we were kids, so we always played with them whenever I went over to her house. Felicity was my favorite, though I was never interested in the books. Since she had all kinds of furniture for all her dolls, we'd pretend the dolls lived in a boarding school and have all kinds of adventures. Ah, good times of my childhood :p
I loved looking at the catalogs, but I knew I'd never get one of my own. Alas.

My friend had one when we were kids, and would always bring it to school.
I don't remember the name, but she would bring it with her everywhere.
(I'm personally wondering why the teachers never said anything about it)
Of course, I was always asking, "Why would you spend $100 on one doll...?"
lol, not much different from spending money on card games like I did.

I remember those dolls too. For some reason, I was never big into dolls of boys and girls. I prefer plush toys of Pokemon, Digimon, animals, etc, but that's just me. I also remember a book series about American girls, but I'm not sure if that's connected to the dolls or not.

The way I remember it from the catalog in 1998 was that each doll had at least five books. Depending on what you ordered, you would receive a certain book. (ex: ordering a Samantha doll comes with her first book: Meet Samantha and ordering Samantha's birthday set comes with her birthday book: Happy Birthday, Samantha.)
The books were also obtainable through a library or bookstore which was how I got to read about characters: Samantha, Molly and Kirsten. I finished the collection of both Samantha and Molly but couldn't stomach Kristens' for being too depressing.
Apart from the books and the accessories like the coconut dog, I did not like the American Girl dolls. The structure of the faces were freaky looking in my opinion and then there were the eyes...too real looking. Still, I do own a Samantha doll. It's...nice, but I prefer the picture of Samantha on the book cover much much more.

Yeah, the books tie into the whole doll line.
And I know this only because the combined 1st-3rd grade class I was in had all the Kirsten, Samantha, Felicity and Addy books.
They were actually historically accurate, and therefore they were used in class as educational material.
And, uh... I actually liked reading them.

Bingo. I couldn't get past the first one because
her friend died.

I used to get the catalogs when i was a little girl. I sort of wanted Addy, the African American girl, but those dolls were so expensive. Eventually, my mom got me one of the baby dolls that were advertised in the same catalog for Christmas. I named my doll Harriet, after Harriet Tubman, who i had been studying in school at the time (my mom said that was an ugly name:anime:).

Yeah her friend was so nice. I read all the Kirsten books except the birthday one.
