This is good news for people in the U.S. like me who haven't seen this because neither Sci-Fi Channel nor BBC America have gotten around to airing it. I guess BBC video just said "screw it" and decided to release it here.
The article also mentions that they are prepping a DVD release for season three. Is it possible this means they will release it soon after it is aired in the U.K.? I would love to see this released early next year instead of having to wait an entire year for Sci-Fi NOT to air the series.
Anyone know when Doctor Who: The Waters of Mars is airing on BBC One? That might give me an idea of when BBC America will air it since they aired Planet of the Dead and Torchwood: Children of Earth very close to their U.K. airdates.

I'm actually not happy about this. The announcement of a DVD release probably means it won't air at all. I like the show, but not quite enough to buy it. Especially at the prices Warner charges for BBC content.

Especially at the prices Warner charges for BBC content. This is true, but I like watching TV shows on DVD better anyways. I'm sure you could rent it if you wanted to from either Netflix or a video store. Amazon will probably have prices for it down to under thirty dollars for it before it's released too.

To be honest, I have no interest in this show. I mean I just got into Doctor Who about a month ago, and while I know of Sarah Jane from the School Reunion episode and The Pyramid of Mars, I just do not know her enough to care.
However, do they have any plans to release these on Blu-Ray? I find it oxy moronic that they released Planet of the Dead on Blu-Ray, but not The Next Doctor, which comes out next month.

They aren't releasing The Next Doctor in Blu-Ray because unlike Planet Of The Dead it wasn't filmed in high definition (pretty sure Sarah Jane isn't either). All of the Doctor Who stuff up to Planet Of The Dead was standard definition while everything Torchwood is High-Def and pretty much perfect for Blu-Ray.

What Fone Bone said. SJA seasons 1 and 2 are not HD. The third season is announced to be in HD.
On a very insignificant note, I wonder what motivates BBC Video to issue a double-standard in box set naming? The post-revamp Doctor Who box sets are all labeled as "The Complete Xth Series," while Torchwood and Sarah Jane are labeled as "The Complete Xth Season." British naming conventions don't use "season" at all, but if they're going to cater to US market terminology, why do it for some shows and not others?

Just because it is not filmed in HD does not mean it will not be better. If nothing else, it should be done for consistency. Plus, the Torchwood Blu-Rays are only 1080i as it is, so how is that real high def anyway? Last I checked, real high def was 1080P. The only thing truly high def on the set is the audio, which can easily be done for the good doctor too.

For consistency sake. Who wants to own half a series on DVD and half of it on Blu-Ray?

I just find it weird reading Series on the Doctor Who sets when it is just a season. When I think of series, I think of the entire series, not a season set.

BBC shoots their shows on video, not film, due to budget constraints. If the episodes were originally shot on film, they could easily create HD transfers for Blu-ray releases. However, due to the use of standard definition video, an HD transfer would do little to improve the image quality. There is no extra detail that is missing from the original SD video broadcasts that could be revealed by an HD conversion.

BBC shoots their shows on video, not film.
To add to this, the few shows the BBC does shoot on film (IE: Life on Mars) are done at 25 FPS as opposed to the usual 24. This makes it unable to be transfered at 1080P without some sort of detrimental slowdown (like with the Criterion box set of Fassbinder's Berlin Alexanderplotz).
Only one Doctor Who story in its entire history (spinoffs and whatnot included and barring the occasional 35mm Kiniscope from the 60s) was shot on film instead of tape (Spearhead from Space in 1969). Its in 16mm and runs 25FPS.

For consistency sake. Who wants to own half a series on DVD and half of it on Blu-Ray? I don't own a Blu-Ray player but it's my understanding that they all play DVDs too so it's not like you'd have to own both machines. Torchwood, Doctor Who and Sarah Jane, when they are all shot in HD will still be available on DVD too for anyone who doesn't have a Blu-Ray player.

Torchwood was shot in HD to begin with due to its low effects requirements. Its always been on Blu.
