Well, it's official. Paula (http://twitter.com/PaulaAbdul) Abdul (http://news-briefs.ew.com/2009/08/04/paula-abdul-announces-leaving-american-idol/) is (http://votefortheworst.com/20090804/paula_abdul_says_she_has_quit_american_idol) leaving American Idol.

Fox says this:
"Paula Abdul has been an important part of the 'American Idol' family over the last eight seasons and we are saddened that she has decided not to return to the show. While Paula will not be continuing with us, she's a tremendous talent and we wish her the best."

Well, Idol will take a little hit, but not a cataclysmic one. We've all pretty much known she was gone since Kara came in. I'll miss her.

Thoughts?

I never really watched American Idol that much at all, but it was always cool to see Randy, Paula and Simon up there judging everyone. I think it took a turn for the worst when Kara came along (I liked it better when she wasn't there )
But hey, she can't do it forever.

Who didn't see this coming? I'm not a big Idol fan but I'll miss Paula.

On one hand, she can't do it forever.

On the other hand, it could very well be a bargaining tactic.

Everyone has something better to do than watch or be a part of reality tv.

Even when you're getting paid millions to do so?

The Idol producers allowing that stalker of hers to audition and later commit suicide outside her house is probably the biggest reason. Paula had announced she was going to quit after the eighth season back in November IIRC, and that's why Kara was brought in.

The show won't suffer much from this. The only crippling blow the show could suffer is if Simon left, and even then, it would still probably be the most-watched show on television.

These days, I always see people quitting their roles in the entertainment business because they don't even ENOUGH millions.

This isn't just any reality show, though...this was one of the biggest phenomenons of this decade, and without it, Paula would still be a has-been most remembered for dancing with a cartoon cat. Honestly, even with all the unpleasantries over the years, I think she should keep the job as long as she can for the sake of her own career.

Once she's not there, people will forget about her just as fast. Unless she gets her own talk show. ......Y'know what, that's probably inevitable........

I won't miss her, no. I hardy watch American Idol as it is but I felt she was crazy so I'm glad she left. Maybe it will become watchable for me again.

I think the title is a bit misleading. First off Paula Abdul's contract was up with American Idol. You can't quit something when you haven't signed a new contract to do so. Next you had that while both her and Kara were on last season, Paula and Randy said a lot of similiar things from a singers perspective, so you got a lot of repetition. Why keep doing something when you're being beat to the punch?

The only true bad thing about her leaving is that now her and Simon can't bicker with each other on the air.

Am I sad that she has chosen to go elsewhere? No, I can't say I am. I only watched one season of Idol in its entirety. She has the musical talent to continue remaining successful without Idol. Good luck Paula.

You know, bigdan, you're right. The title is misleading. Can we get a mod to change it to Paula Abdul Has Left American Idol, please?

Thanks.

I wonder if this has anything to do with her scene in Bruno. Where her actions made her look like the biggest hypocritical moron in the world right infront of millions of people.

Not that people didn't already know she was an idiot.

While Idol will definitely feel different without Paula, how it'll affect the ratings is up in the air at this point. Paula has practically become tied to the "American Idol" name in the past few years of her public image, and vice versa. I don't know how the majority of the public will respond to an "Idol" without a Paula. Then again, plenty of people were sick of Paula and her odd demeanor.

I for one had nothing against Paula, but man, was she annoying. Her constant tendency to beat around the bush and never give a straight answer was annoying not because she was trying to be nice, but because it extended the overall judgment for what seemed like an eternity. It also showed that she was unfit to be a judge to begin with. The judge's job is to critique, not to cushion the blow from what the other judges might say. Besides, I doubt that hardly any of the contestants would take Paula's judgment seriously. She gives standing ovations and great judgments to every other contestants; so much that it became instantly predictable and meant absolutely nothing because no one believed it was an honest critique.

And what was up this last season. Practically every time her turn came to give a judgment, she'd try to scavenge out some fancy word, which would make her critique even longer than it already was since we had to wait for her to find the "perfect word". Was she trying to make herself sound smart in response to how the media portrays her as a dim-wit. Well, to be honest, doing that whole "fancy word" thing just made her look dumber.

I think Idol might feel differently to me without Paula, but I'll probably get used to it. I got used to Kara pretty quick. Besides, her routine spats with Simon were the farthest thing from entertaining anyways.

Bruno basically had her come into his house to do an interview and since he had no furniture he had the Mexican house cleaners come and sit on the ground, having Paula sit on top of them so she wouldn't be on the floor. To top it off though, she talked about her "humanitarian program" of making poverty-stricken people's lives better, WHILE SITTING ON A LIVING HUMAN BEING.

It also was not a staged part of the film.

The show won't last without Simon. He made the show a hit in England then brought it here and also made it a hit. You can't get rid of a guy like that and expect the show to last.

There is talk. On Ellen he described his experience on American Idol as a great dinner with a great bunch of people. But, he said, the "dinner" has to end at some point. Plus he only has one year left on his contract, and who knows if wants to resign. Look at this article, I think Simon might be done after next season.

It would be such a shame too. American Idol just hit a new high with their finale. Any show that can get KISS, Rod Stewart, Cyndi Lauper and Queen (just to name a few) is clearly a big deal.

So in other words, Paula kept her promise to leave after Season 8. Hmmmmkay, that does make some sense, but I don't think much of the media even remembers that announcement from 9 months ago.

Also, she'd just hired a new manager about a few weeks ago, and I read an online article earlier that says that "Idol" producer Nigel Lythgoe is talking about Paula moving over to "So You Think You Can Dance". Anything to keep her on the payroll, I suppose, especially considering this would play more to her dance background.

Who? You mean the guy who was only in the first few episodes of season 1 as a co-host with Ryan Seacrest? He probably has been better off since he left the show.

He's not even in TV shape anymore either. Have any of you guys seen him recently? He's gone fat and old in just a few years.

Did Paula commit career suicide? (And what she can learn from Jay Leno) (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/tgoodman/detail?blogid=24&entry_id=45030)
http://tvtattle.com/images/idol.paula25.jpgDon't bet on the former "Idol" judge appearing on "SYTYCD" or any other hit show, says Tim Goodman. "Listen, this is very simple: You're not going to see her on Fox again," he says. "And, if there are still miracles in this industry and she manages to pop up on another network, it will be an inferior product and she'll look like she's slumming. That much is obvious. This much probably needs to resurface as a reminder: Abdul has no obvious talent to monetize anymore. Her star was always hitched to "Idol," even when her personal behavior seemed hell bent on ruining it. She was printing money over there and, given the events of the last couple of days, apparently highly unaware of how blessed she was."

She's already been offered a job at So You Think You Can Dance.

That guy who wrote that article is a moron. It's obvious American Idol is a sinking ship. Its popularity is slowly declining as people get tired of the repetitive, shallow product it's always been (but of course it'll be revived again in another 15-20 years) Some may not see it just yet, but Abdul actually has the foresight to see the signs. IN fact, this is the smartest thing she's done in years. And I'm not even a fan or hers.

The ratings may be declining, but no more than any other show on network TV. American Idol is still the highest rated show on network television. Though, I will agree with you that the guy who wrote that article is a moron.
