From Comic Book Resources (http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=22164):

First to be published will be "BONE: Tall Tales," coming in Summer 2010, written by Jeff Smith and Tom Sniegoski, and illustrated by Jeff Smith, featuring new art and stories with favorite BONE characters. In addition, Scholastic will publish a highly-anticipated expansion of the BONE world—the Quest for the Spark Trilogy. Overseen by Smith, the trilogy will be written by Tom Sniegoski and illustrated by Jeff Smith. "BONE Quest for the Spark: Book One" (Fall 2010), "BONE Quest for the Spark: Book Two" (Spring 2011), and "BONE Quest for the Spark: Book Three" (Summer 2011) represent the first time Smith has continued the adventures set in the valley since the publication of Rose, the prequel to the BONE series—to be released by Scholastic/Graphix in August 2009.

I am SO TOTALLY there. I do have to ask whether this is why RASL seems to be so late these days, though.

Not to bring up this debate again (http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?t=232630), but just to be clear here: these are new Graphic Novels, not individual comics, right?

And they are going to be full artwork "graphic novels", right? Not written novels, with pictures by Jeff Smith in them, right? The reason I ask is because he's never had a cowriter before, (am I right?) so why now?

I loved Bone. So I'm very interested about this.

Pretty sure they're really original graphic novels, not individual comics or illustrated novels, but the PR is just vague enough that it may not be comics in some form. Smith also collaborated with Tom Sniegoski for the Stupid Stupid Rat Tails mini-series, featuring Fone, Phoney, and Smiley's ancestor (and really blatant double-entendre) Big Johnson Bone. I thought it was just about as good as the main series, so I'm not too worried that these are going to suck.

EDIT: More from The Beat (http://pwbeat.publishersweekly.com/blog/2009/07/23/exclusive-more-bone-on-the-way-from-scholastic/):

We managed to catch up with Smith this morning and he confirmed that the first volume of the trilogy will include Smiley Bone and Bartleby in a series of “Bone Scout” stories, with a trio of young scouts telling tale tales (in the grand comics tradition of the Junior Woodchucks.) More will be told at this afternoon’s Jeff Smith/Terry Moore panel.

I finally sat down and read Bone this summer (all in one sitting XD) and wondered why I hadn't read it before! X)

They're re-releasing Rose? Sweet! :)

I got into Bone by buying the one-volume edition, so at that point all you could find was the main series in all of it's many versions without resorting to online buying. Never got a chance to read Rose.

I'm there for all of this.

News from Jeff's blog:

Last night I announced two new BONE projects; BONE: Tall Tales and BONE: Quest for the Spark.
Tall Tales, pictured above, is a major repackaging of a book I did with Tom Snigoski a few years ago called Stupid, Stupid Rat-Tails. This new book, which takes place after the Bones have returned to Boneville, revolves around Smiley and Bartleby telling tales around a campfire to a group of young Bone Scouts (their names are Ringo, Bingo, & Todd!).
One of the tales will be the long out of print story I did for Disney Adventures that was not in the BONE books, and will now be returned to the BONE cannon with a beautiful coloring job by Steve Hamaker. Another will be the The Adventures of Big Johnson Bone, Frontier Hero, which appeared in black & white as Stupid, Stupid Rat-Tails. Tom Snigoski, who wrote SSRT, has written two new Johnson Bone stories, both of which are pretty incredible. All now in glorious Hamaker colors! I will be writing all the new Smiley and Bartleby stuff.
BONE: Quest for the Spark is a slightly different kind of thing. It is not a comic; it’s a novel. A series of three novels written by Tom Snigoski that follow a new generation of Bone characters into the Valley.

I was a bit unsure about this project when Tom first suggested it, but when I read the first book I laughed so hard, I agreed to do it. Scholastic was so blown away by it, that they decided to make it available in hardcover and wanted the illustrations, of which I think I’m going to do about twenty, full bleed and in color.
While not an official sequel to my comic, it will be fun to see some the characters again, like the stupid rat creatures, and Roderick the racoon.
BONE: Tall Tales is scheduled for Summer of 2010, and BONE: Quest for the Spark volume one, is set for 2011.

Yep, Quest for the Spark will be a novel with some illustrations. Still looking forward to it, though, as Jeff liked it.

I just got into Bone last year (currently a little over halfway through) and am thoroughly enjoying it. I'd better hurry and get to finishing it so I'll be ready for these new stories!

I can't wait either. Bone's one of my favorite American comics.
