Just saw SHREK, but I wasn't impressed.

Ok, the critics forced me into this one (as well as a lot of people on these boards). The reviews weer just TOO good for me to avoid this film, so I went out and watched it on cheap movie night (Tuesday), but honestly, I didn't see what all the hype was about.

Granted, it was a unique, creative, and mildly funny spoof of fairy tales (especially Disney), but throughout the entire course of the movie, I only found myself laughing 3 or 4 times. I think this movie is totally geared at adults, 'cause the majority of the jokes are references to pop culture that most kids just wouldn't get. I understood all the jokes, but I guess I didn't find them funny 'cause I'm a product of the MTV generation (even though I don't get MTV).

The main reason I think I thought Shrek was only ok was because my expectations were high, and I was expecting to laugh a hell of a lot. Unfortunately, movies like Austin Powers (both), American Pie, and Scary Movie have limited my vision in terms of comedy. Maybe it is just me, but the person I went with also thought it was just ok.

Did everyone out there just totally love this movie? (Note: I didn't "not like" the movie, I just thought it was ok. Seemed overrated)

This is why I try to avoid any kind of hype before I see a movie. I want to judge it on it's own merits, not based on expectations raised from what others have said. Typically, I will build up something in my mind that the movie cannot provide, and more than likely I will like the movie just fine by myself without listening to the hype.

I liked Shrek alot--it is one of the few movies I have gone to see more than once at the theater. As for the humor--well, Shrek did add some mild gross out humor because nowdays those whose humor palates have been dulled by the likes of 'American Pie' and 'Something About Mary' expect vulgar comedy. But Shrek is as much about relationships as it is about jokes. It is essentially a story of love and friendship and belonging and the humor follows this.

Yes, Shrek's humor is multi-layered, but I found this to be a good thing. From the nod to pro-wrestling to the parody of Riverdance to the skewering of Disneyworld, there is something for everyone if they pay attention. Even a sly reference to Babe. I hope Shrek leads to bigger and better writing for the animation field! I hope it opens the door to the adult market! :D :D
