In your opinion, which of these well known and popular cartoons (which have lowered in quality severely) did you like better when they were in their golden years (when they had reached the peak of quality)?

I honestly can't decide. Simpsons and Spongebob are both shows to me that are alright to watch when they come on, but if they quit playing them it will take quite a while for me to start missing them.

Simpsons by a country mile.

I've never really stopped watching reruns of golden era Simpsons episodes, while I've lost pretty much all interest in Spongebob, even the older ones.

I think since I've been watching Simpsons reruns since I was a little kid, it's just become part of my life so I won't really tire of them ever. But anyway I liked Spongebob at one point but never anywhere close to how big of a Simpsons fan I've been.

The Simpsons. Spongebob might be considered one of the best animated television series of all time, but the Simpsons is considered one of the best, if not the best, television series of all time period.

Eh, whatever. Spongebob I guess. My parents always hated it when I would watch it. :p My first episode was Bubble Stand and you can bet the 'pelvic thrust' went over well with them.

Absolutely no competion in my opinion. The Simpsons was consistently great for its first 8 years, while Spongebob never really amused me at all. I've never understood why it's supposed to be so great. It just sort of seems like a typical kids' show with a bit of a slight, watered-down Ren and Stimpy vibe. The characters are fairly annoying to me.

Simpsons, hands-down.

The Simpsons was one of the best shows period in its golden years. Spongebob was and is a very popular kids cartoon, but its not one of the "best" shows out there.

For The Simpsons, I would say the golden years were 1989-1997, and for SpongeBob, 2002-2005. Now, it's kind of difficult to compare a kids' show with a non-kids' show, but The Simpsons isn't TOO raunchy, and SpongeBob has some stuff that appeals to non-kids.

Anyways, overall I'm definitely going with The Simpsons. What can beat it? Best American animated show of all time in my opinion.

The Simpsons, but i like both shows. Indeed considering the amount of times i've seen Simpsons reruns of classic episodes, Spongebob is usually favorable to me although, considering the shows from a purely artistic viewpoint (as in art of perfection, not of creativity) i'd say The Simpsons is the better show due to various fairly unimportant factors... So to be honest i like them both fairly equally and only choose The Simpsons because i have to choose.

I choose Spongebob, I love the artwork and characters, and the originality of the concept. In its first three seasons, the writing was just about the funniest I've ever seen in a kids' cartoon.

I don't like The Simpsons, it's not an original concept (the dysfunctional family thing has been done at least a million times before it), it uses the same jokes and plotlines over and over again, and the artwork is extremely bland and boring.

Before I rebuttal this post, I just want to make a disclaimer that I love the first 2 1/2 seasons of SpongeBob.

I don't like The Simpsons, it's not an original concept (the dysfunctional family thing has been done at least a million times before it), I'll sort of give you this one; SpongeBob is a very original concept in more ways than one, while The Simpsons has a very familiar premise. However, I would argue that the ideas they make with the premise are just as important (if not more so) as the premise itself. It's not really fair to say, "Oh it stars a family; we've seen that before, therefore it sucks!"
it uses the same jokes and plotlines over and over again, I need some clarification here. Are you saying the golden period of The Simpsons reused jokes and plotlines? Because it didn't. In the grand scheme of 20 seasons, sure, but in the first eight or nine years, I was amazed how they managed to keep it fresh. And outside of a few catchphrases, the show didn't recycle jokes either.
and the artwork is extremely bland and boring Maybe compared to SpongeBob, but there are some bits and pieces of good facial expressions throughout the series, and even some cartoonier moments once in a while (watch Treehouse of Horror IV and V if you don't believe me). And besides, I'm of the philosophy that a cartoon's writing is just as important as its artwork. If a show has great animation but unfunny jokes and bad writing, what's the point? (I'm not suggesting SpongeBob IS this way; I'm just speaking hypothetically)

I pick Sponge. I had some awesome summers because of that little yellow guy.

Is there really a debate here? The Simpsons is a show that in the 90's redefined what a cartoon could be. It's a show that the entire family could sit together and would absolutely love. Spongebob is a potty humor show that's place in history rivals Ren And Stimpy.

Spongebob is a potty humor show that's place in history rivals Ren And Stimpy. Have you even seen SpongeBob? It has barely any potty humor. At least, not to the extent of Ren & Stimpy.
