The movie I picked to watch tonight was on Turner Classic Movies and was called Love Happy, the final Marx Brothers film with a cameo by a very young Marilyn Monroe. In the opening credits, low and behold - "Written by Frank Tashlin." Huh, how about that! Could it be the same? Afterwards, i checked www.imdb.com and yup, the same Frank Tashlin. I had no idea he's written and directed the likes of the Marx Brothers, Bob Hope, Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis.

Another of my movie choices tonight, the one i didn't pick, started an hour later on American Movie Classics - The Private Navy of Sgt. O'Farrell... another Tashlin film! Two on at the same time on the same night!

Tashlin was considered Paramount's No. 1 comedy director during the 1950s, working with both Bob Hope and Martin & Lewis. He also did "Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?" a pretty cynical (for the time) look at celebrity media hype starring Jayne Mansfield (rowr, rowr) and Tony Randall.

Some "cartoony" moments from Tashlin's features:

Son of Paleface (1952)-The drink fixed for Bob Hope first makes his head spin, then his body spins while his head stays still, then his head sinks out of sight and smoke comes out of his collar.

Artists and Models (1955)-When Shirley Maclaine kisses Jerry Lewis while he's leaning against the water cooler, the water starts boiling.

Hollywood or Bust (1956)-After trying out "Echo Canyon", Jerry Lewis comments "That was very nice.". "THANK YOU!" replies the canyon.

Yupper one and the same. I highly reccomend Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter? One of the few times the movie is better than the broadway play it's adapted from.:)

And before that, there was The Girl Can't Help It. Pretty good, but the worst movie I'VE ever seen. That is, I haven't seen all that many movies, but of the ones I've seen, that's the worst, which doesn't neccesarily mean it's a BAD film. That may sound weird, but I think you know what I mean.

While we're on the subject of TCM, I might as well get a plug in. My all-time favorite movie, Born Yesterday, is on TCM tomorrow at 3:30 PM. I wouldn't be surprised if some of you have seen it and love it as much as I do, but if you haven't seen it yet, now is the time! (especially if, like an online friend of mine in Washington, your local video store happens to not have it.) If you've only seen the 1993 remake (WHY the h-e-double-hockey-sticks they would need to remake such a perfectly-executed film is beyond me) with Melanie Griffith and thought "Geez, that doesn't seem very funny", you're in for a treat. The original is light years ahead of the remake.
Off-topic for this board, I know, but after all, if we discussed ONLY cartoons here, it would be a pretty darn one-dimensional community here.

-Andrew Paul G., Ram'bling hei-me. (Hey, that's what I AM- a heimie. I can say that about myself. Geez, I'm rambling AGAIN!) Chatty, ain't I?

Born Yesterday was an outstanding movie. It's a shame many people nowadays wouldn't even consider watching it 'cause it wasn't made recently. Why'd they remake it? That's an easy one - $
