I've been dieing to buy the current DVD but I know its got next to nothing for extras so I've been waiting for a special edition or SOMETHING to come out! I know there has to be a re-release sometime and I feel like I would be wasting my money if I bought it now :(

Save your money. A special edition will happen sooner or later.
Read on the news page about Batman being the biggest selling WB title. The article also mentioned "no snappers or flippers", like the Superman SE, when it does come out. No snappers is a given, but the no flippers comment is a little misleading.
Technically, one can classify the Superman DVD as a flipper because you have to flip the disc over to watch some of the special features. Well, that is not bad in the sense that most people think of as bad when thinking of flippers. The negative connotation surrounding the dreaded flipper is when you have to literally flip the disc over in the middle of the feature. It gets to a certain scene, the screen turns black, one cusses to one's self and has to eject the disc, flip it, and sit back down to finish up the film. Well, Superman isn't like this. The movie, commentary, and a few special features are on side A, the rest on Side B; thus there is no difference between the way it is now and a 2-disc special edition. Both require an eject and disc change. So, I wouldn't mind if the Batman SE is setup the way the current Supes is. I can live without a label.

The Superman disc is a DVD-18, and from what I understand, Warner is no longer supporting dual-sided, dual-layered discs. A special edition has been rumored for quite a long time. Basically it comes down to Tim Burton's availability, but supposedly it'll be out before the end of 2003...very likely before the end of this year.
Warner's last official comment, as far as I know, from the HTF's chat last October:
<Jacob> What is the latest news on a special edition Batman:SE and is it
true that Batman Returns will get a SE too?
<Warner> Both are under consideartion. No timetable yet.
Their previous chat with the HTF said in no uncertain terms that the title would be revisited.

Actually the "no flippers, snappers" comment was just that - a comment. I was including a comment on what I would like to see on the disc, which is no flippers or snappers on the disc. The second paragraph is essentially my comments on a special edition DVD for the movie.
And the last mention of a BATMAN DVD by WB was quite sometime ago, saying they have it under consideration, although don't expect it before 2003. They also said it involves Burton's partiicpation. He currently has no big project lined up, so now would be perfect...
I think we will get it in 2003, myself.

You'd think this would have been a obvious SE movie - I'm surprised this is taking so long...!
