HOLLYWOOD -- Universal (http://www.variety.com/profiles/Company/main/2008125/Universal%20Pictures.html?dataSet=1) will release Ridley Scott (http://www.variety.com/profiles/people/main/28457/Ridley%20Scott.html?dataSet=1)'s take on Robin Hood on May 14, 2010.

The Russell Crowe-Cate Blanchett (http://www.variety.com/profiles/people/main/32056/Cate%20Blanchett.html?dataSet=1) starrer was originally titled "Nottingham." Indications are that Universal will change the title to the more identifiable "Robin Hood," (http://javascript<b></b>:zodInfuser.FillDescriptions('&quot;Robin Hood.&quot;');) but for now studio says the pic is untitled.

Universal's move fills out the May 2010 calendar.

Paramount and Marvel Entertainment (http://www.variety.com/profiles/Company/main/2124400/Marvel%20Entertainment.html?dataSet=1) open "Iron Man 2" on May 2, while Par/DreamWorks Animation (http://www.variety.com/profiles/Company/main/2015176/DreamWorks%20Animation.html?dataSet=1) go out with "Shrek Goes Fourth" on May 21. Disney unspools "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time" on May 28.

Scott is skedded to begin lensing in the next two months.

Crowe stars as the legendary figure known by generations as Robin Hood, whose exploits have endured in popular mythology and ignited the imagination of those who share his spirit of adventure and righteousness. In 13th century England, Robin and his band of marauders confront corruption in a local village and lead an uprising against the crown that will forever alter the balance of world power. And whether thief or hero, one man from humble beginnings will become an eternal symbol of freedom for his people.

The untitled Robin Hood adventure chronicles the life of an expert archer, previously interested only in self-preservation, from his service in King Richard’s army against the French. Upon Richard’s death, Robin travels to Nottingham, a town suffering from the corruption of a despotic sheriff and crippling taxation, where he falls for the spirited widow Lady Marion (Blanchett), a woman skeptical of the identity and motivations of this crusader from the forest. Hoping to earn the hand of Maid Marion and salvage the village, Robin assembles a gang whose lethal mercenary skills are matched only by its appetite for life. Together, they begin preying on the indulgent upper class to correct injustices under the sheriff.

With their country weakened from decades of war, embattled from the ineffective rule of the new king and vulnerable to insurgencies from within and threats from afar, Robin and his men heed a call to ever greater adventure. This unlikeliest of heroes and his allies set off to protect their country from slipping into bloody civil war and return glory to England once more.

I like Robin Hood and would like to give this the benefit of the doubt seeing as how Ridley Scott is directing it, but it's starring Russell Crowe, so . . .

Hard to back a guy who's phoned in almost all his performances in the last decade and is quite the jerk in real life. Now if he made a movie with a certain tugboat...then we got somethin.

I wonder if there'll be a theme song who'll be done specifically for this movie, just like Bryan Adams' "Everything I do (I do it for you)" was made for "Robin Hood: princes of thieves" with Kevin Costner?

At least they figured out a way to hide Crowe's bulge in the costume.

I'm a little confused, what happened with the Sheriff Nottingham premise? Is this take that Robin Hood/Nottingham are the same?

They decided not to do that.

I still say this will be great, and I think the Crowe skepticism is misplaced. Gladiator and A Beautiful Mind were many things, but "phoned in" acting was most certainly not one of them.

It's been awhile since Robin Hood came to the big screen, so I'm really anticipating this.

TheVileOne

So is there not even a Sheriff of Nottingham in this?

Some months ago there was talk of Crowe trying to get Ridley Scott fired, even though they were apparently good friends and had worked together multiple times before.

He's in it but not played by Crowe, who was supposed to play both parts.

Nothing is confirmed, but rumors say Matthew MacFadyen.

DarkAngel

They decided not to do that.
And I'm really disappointed about that. I was looking forward to a different take and the thought of focusing on the sheriff with the title "Nottingham" seemed really intriguing to me. Now its seeming very standard, just another Robin Hood movie. I'm not nearly as excited as I once was.

TheVileOne

Seems pretty pointless since I thought that whole premise was the reason to do the movie. I mean what's the point if they aren't going to do something different?

There have been so many derivative takes on Robin Hood already.

Okay, never even heard of it. Probably because I live in the USA where we don't get BBC. I mean, it is the British Broadcasting Company. If we get any British shows on television around here, it's because someone at an US broadcasting company made the effort to bring it over.

As for the movie trailer . . . . meh. It's intense, but I don't get a real "Robin Hood" vibe from it. Probably their intention, though. Pull in the people who wouldn't normally see a Robin Hood movie.

I'm partial to the old Errol Flynn technicolor version.

That said, I do like Crowe, always have. His jerky-ness only enhances my enjoyment of him.

He is however, getting a little too fat. Guy needs to hit a gym ASAP.

I do love Robin's costume in that one. It pays tribute to the classic look, but in a more modern-looking way that makes it really cool. Patrick Stewart's cameo is great, too. :)

I rented the Errol Flynn Robin Hood several years ago, but I only made it about halfway through before I finally had to stop it.

To me, Robin Hood should be younger man at least in his mid 20's to early 30's with a slim and toned look.
But Ridley has never really disappointed me aside from Hannibal (and only slightly due to a lack of Jodi Foster and different ending) and Kingdom of Heaven felt very "meh" to me.

I like Russell Crowe, even while he's throwing stuff at me; the man is a very good actor.
So I'll remain optimistic.

It's definitely not for everyone. It is a little dated for most people. But it looks fantastic and its cartoonish tone suits me.

I was excited initially when the movie was reportedly to be titled Nottingham with a focus more on the Sheriff as protagonist, Robin Hood contributing somewhat secondarily, potentially more as an antagonist, and the highlighting of an interesting love triangle involving Marion. It seemed like we were headed for something different, an exploration of the material from an unexpected perspective. My interest was piqued and I was quite excited about the possibilities.

It's been with much dismay that I've followed the development of this project away from something that seemed fresh and towards the mundane land of The Already Well-Explored. Nottingham became Robin Hood (seriously, could they have chosen a more boring title?), representing the shift back to the more predictable choice for protagonist.

From wikipedia:

Scott had a different interpretation of the story from "the script, [which] had the sheriff of Nottingham as a CSI-style forensics investigator".[3] (http://www.galacticsenate.com/#cite_note-romp-2) Scott elaborated the script portrayed the Sheriff of Nottingham as being Richard the Lionheart's right-hand man, who returns to England to serve Prince John after Richard's assassination. Though Scott felt John "was actually pretty smart, he got a bad rap because he introduced taxation so he's the bad guy in this", and the Sheriff would have been torn between the "two wrongs" of a corrupt king and an outlaw inciting anarchy.

*sigh* That sounds a heck of a lot more interesting then what I think we're getting. I'm sure the Sheriff will now be the predictable despicable bad guy that the great and noble Robin Hood has to take down.

With the trailer keying in on Scott as the director of Gladiator, and with Crowe pretty much sporting his Maximus look from that movie, it feels like Gladiator, part II, and not in a good way. With Scott directing, I'm sure we can expect a well-directed and produced movie, but that's what Body of Lies was, and while it kept me interested for a couple hours, that's all it did. Like that movie, I'll probably only end up seeing Robin Hood if it happens to playing on a week I headed to the theater with friends and nothing else stands out.

Boy, that's a much different and better trailer than the U.S. one. I'm a big Ridley Scott fan and I think he really excells at genre type films (Alien, Blade Runner, Gladiator, his director's cut of Kingdom of Heaven) and think his "modern age" films like Black Hawk Down and Body of Lies are good, but not great. American Gangster though I really liked. Never saw Thelma and Louise and Hannibal was a bad film.

Scott had said before filming that his vision of Robin Hood was to be a more realistic, hard edged, action oriented take on the story much like his Gladiator. So I'm hoping that we'll get an R rating for this. Just based on some of the action scenes and fighting scenes in both trailers, it looks like it could swing this way.

Oh dear, now Ridley Scott wants his Robin Hood movie to be converted to 3D.

http://cinemablend.com/new/Ridley-Scott-Wants-Robin-Hood-In-3D-16297.html

This is a terrible idea. A movie has to be shot specifically for 3D. The pseudo-3D created in post is all kinds of horrible.

don't forget Rocket Robin Hood, a 1960s cartoon featuring a descendant of Robin Hood in the 30th century (the serie who was in constant reruns in various tv stations in Canada until the late 1980s and Teletoon Retro re-aired some episodes), I mentionned it in a thread in the retro section  http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?t=232720
