The "6th Annual Toon Zone CBC Awards" are now over...and now at last, we come to our Final Theme Week!

For Week #7, we're dedicating this week to the winner of the "Best Mini-Series of 2008" category:

We're started by changing the Logo at the top of the Comic Book Culture forum. You might've noticed it: it's the one that says "Secret Invasion Week"! ;)

Next, with each Theme Week, we're pinning a discussion thread to the top of the CBC forum, (in this case, I'm stickying the talkback thread for the mini-series "Secret Invasion" to the top of the forum!! (http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?t=208512))

We're also celebrating by having the mods try out different "Skrull" avatars from Secret Invasion tie-in issues from the last year! Join in and show off your own avatars featuring Skrulls, (from the last year or from years past)!!

You've voted it to be your "Favorite Mini-Series" of 2008, now drop by the thread and tell us WHY it's your favorite! Also, feel free to discuss Skrull stories from years past as well!

Topics for Discussion:

1. If you had your way, who would've been revealed as a Skrull this last year? Who shouldn't have been revealed as a Skrull? I'd like to know if any of you think that a Marvel character needed a "reboot" via being revealed to be a Skrull? Or were you happy with all of the Skrull reveals?!?

2. With so much "Secret Invasion" content published this last year, how about a miniature version of the CBC Awards for our "Best Mini-Series"? What was your favorite "Secret Invasion" tie-in mini-series, one-shot, or story arc from a Marvel comic? Best Writer of a "Secret Invasion" arc? Best Artist? Favorite Hero against the Skrulls? Favorite "Super Skrull" design? And finally: Best Fight Scene?!?

Feel free to vote for any of the various tie-in's, one-shots, and story arcs, including the main "Secret Invasion" mini-series itself!!

Further activities for this Theme Week will be posted soon, (and don't forget, someone will win the chance to give their own "Pick of the Week" in the "This Month In Comics" thread)! In the meantime, feel free to drop by here and post your comments on all things "Secret Invasion" related!!

1. I was generally happy with all of the Skrull reveals -- especially Spider-Woman/Veranke. Despite my dissatisfaction with the ending of the event, that was still one of my favorite twists. It painted everything that had transpired since the "Breakout" arc in New Avengers in a completley different light, that not only had Jessica Drew been a Skrull all this time, but that it was the leader of the invasion itself.

2. If I had to pick, Secret Invasion: X-Men # 1. I love how the Skrull contingent thought that taking San Francisco and California by extent was going to be a cakewalk. Then the X-teams and the no-nonsense, post-Whedon Cyclops show up, issue an ultimatum, and then start tearing into them. Good fun.

if iron man was revealed as a skrull, i wouldn't hate the character as much as i do now. but i dont actually want to like iron man. so, i'm glad he wasn't a skrull.

In addition, Tony being revealed as a Skrull would have been too obvious and cliched; a way of pandering to the Civil War backlash against the character.

I actually like how the whole Iron Man thing is playing out. I like the whole "fall from grace" thing, and how he's trying to redeem himself after all of this. It's much better than a "Oops! Skrull!" thing, and it gives some decent character growth.

As for Secret Invasion? Gotta say, I've got a soft spot for it. Before it, I think the only Marvel comic I was getting monthly was Captain America. I kept up with what was going on in the universe through Wizard and stuff, but not really reading any of it. But I thought the concept of Secret Invasion was interesting, so I grabbed the first issue for the heck of it, and ended up getting the rest. I kind of credit it with me getting more back into Marvel.

It gets a ton of crap, and I can't really argue with it, because I have no real basis to compare it to, but I guess as a "casual fan," I can vouch for it being good.

I'm sorry I didn't respond any before now, but I've had a bit of a cold lately. Anyway, I figured I'd wrap things up with my own answers to the questions above:

1. I have to admit, the revelation about Spider-Woman took me totally by surprise. If anyone remembers those New Avengers issues drawn by Frank Cho, Spider-Woman is approached by Nick Fury to report to him while he's underground in hiding...apparently Nick Fury didn't do as good of research as he should have! I'm actually surprised that wasn't more of a plot point...

I'm also left wondering why Spider-Woman/Skrull felt the need to take the body to Iron Man, other than to seed mistrust among the Mighty Avengers...but then, wouldn't it have been better to keep them in the dark? Or maybe she needed a plausible reason to abandon the New Avengers, (now that they knew of the Skrull plot)...

I honestly thought that we were going to end up with one of the Mighty Avengers being a Skrull, (my bet was on Wonder Man, because Bendis seems incapable of doing anything creative with him).

I also don't like Bendis bringing back Mockingbird from the dead, (I hate continuity inserts)...she was very clearly dead, last I checked.

2. Here's my Mini-Secret Invasion Awards:

Best Writer: Jason Aaron, for the Black Panther tie-in issues. The plot twist ending was very much fun, and proved to me that Aaron could write a successful Black Panther book.

Best Artist: Dougie Breathwaite, for his "Secret Invasion: Thor" issues. I love the guy's artwork, and was surprised he wasn't put on a more high profile Marvel project by now, (but hey, having him on a Secret Invasion doesn't hurt)!

Best Super Skrull Design: The "Martial Arts" Skrull, from the Black Panther issues. He's got Iron Fist's hands, Bullseye's aim, and Wolverine's claws!! And he still wasn't able to beat the Black Panther!

Best tie-in: The New Avengers and Mighty Avengers single issue stories! These were a refreshing change of pace for Bendis! I love "single issue" stories, I feel like I'm getting my money's worth, which is somewhat of a rare thing when it comes to Bendis, (the master of "story padding"). I mean, some of the single issues weren't that great, but I actually looked forward each month to seeing what new plot twist Bendis had come up with!

I'll leave this stickied up to the top of the forum for a couple more days, because I wanted to ask: Is there any suggestions you guys have for the Theme Weeks, for next year? Any ideas you may have are welcome, and we the moderators appreciate the input!

Feel free to send me a private message if you have any comments, and thanks again to all who participated in the CBC Awards, and in the Theme Weeks!!! See you next year!!! ;)

Wizard had a pretty big article, maybe 13 pages or more, with commentary from Bendis and Yu starting from New Avengers 31 all the way to Secret Invasion 8...very cool stuff.
