I was very pleased to see in my latest edition of Video Store Magazine they had a two page spread for an advertisement for the new JL DVDs (one page by itself) and the other Batman DVDs coming out April 23rd. Two page spreads like this in VSM are not common, and it's impressive to see WB devoting space to these titles like this. (I only wish I had a scanner to share it with you all!)
It's an ad geared towards video store retailers and people who order product for their stores, and so it gives pointers on which audience the DVDs are marketed towards. WB predicts in this ad that 45% of the audience will be boys 6-7 (who "enjoy Justice League characters ahead of Power Rangers, Superman , and Star Wars")
The rest of the target audience WB is aiming for are adults. "Jusice League characters enjoy higher standing among adults, surpassing Star Wars, Spiderman (sic), NASCAR and Wrestling. Justice League was #2 in "Definite" overall consumer product purchase interest among adults in 2001." (These findings are from CA Walker, with the Super Heroes Awareness & Attitudes Survey/2001).
While I am glad they are gearing some of this marketing towards adults, do you think it's accurate that 45% of the audience are 6-7 year old boys? Geez, it's no wonder WB doesn't give us lavish season sets if they believe that strongly the large chunk of their audience are so young!
