View Full Version : Do you think Sonic Universe will last long?
In all of Sonic's comic history the second comic never lasted long Super sonic specials only lasted 15 quaterly issues Knuckles only lasted 36 and Sonic X only lasted 40 which had me thinking how long will this one last? I don't think it will go past 50 issues seeing as that would be an aniversry issue.
Knuckles and the Super Specials were canceled due to low sales. Sonic X, on the other hand, was ended because they wanted to "quit while they were ahead" and try something new, thus Sonic Universe.
Heck, if drivel like Sonic X can have strong sales from beginning to end, there's no doubt in my mind Sonic Universe can.

Personally, I find it amazing that the Sonic X comic lasted as long as it did. I mean, the actual cartoon ended 2 1/2 years ago.
Sure, the main series with nearly 200 issues originally based loosely on a 26 episode Saturday morning series that ended nearly 14 years ago, but they have at least gone with a universe not solely stuck on SatAM mode. The Sonic X comic, from what I saw, stuck solely in the universe and spirit of the source material.
Sonic Universe, if the name implies what I think it does (and I don't have much else to go on, since the mentions of it have been very vague other than a 4-issue Shadow arc), then it could be a breath of fresh air. Literally, they could jump all around the multiverse, doing stories set in the actual cartoon universes and even side-stories in their own (I'm still hoping they can manage to get the license to use Fleetway characters in this anthology series).
I'd say it'll last, at the very least, about as long as the Knuckles comics, but I hope it lasts at least as long as the Sonic X comics.

considering sonic Universe is basically a compainon to STH I think its good to say it'll have a decent run I could see it lasting 50 isssues easy' I mean STH is coming close to #200 so theres no reason a spinoff can't last long as well (& The only Reason Knuckles was Cancled was because off sales dropping in the last year & Archie's financial trouble.)

The number of ways Sonic the Hedgehog's storyline deviated between issues 60-100 is what forced me to drop the book entirely. Things just kept changing too much, and not in ways I liked.
I continue to peek in on StH every now and again. I'll definitely check out Universe when it goes on sale. But if it's too closely tied to the main book then I won't be able to get into it.
Regardless of my feelings on the matter, I'm happy to see the comic continue to have a large fanbase and be making it all the way to #200. It was a huge part of my childhood and it's great that new generations also have access to it.

Welcome to the club. You're far from the only one who felt that way. However, a lot of people I've spoken to have begun picking up the book since the brand new creative team has taken over. Ian Flynn has done a fine job "cutting the fat" and undoing all the horrible aspects the book has been suffering from the past several years. I consider issues 160 and onward to be a silver age for the comic.

Well, Universe is basically a supplemental book tied directly to the main one (i.e. the Specials and mini-series). Take that as you will.

And so, the Archie continuity version of Team Dark has finally formed. I wonder if Team Rose'll form any time soon (I don't think they've made an Archie version of Cream yet and Big hasn't appeared in a long time).
Not that, you know, I want Team Rose to form or anything. Team Dark, I'm fine with, but please, keep Big out of the spotlight. Though, since Sonic Universe has finally introduced Omega, I hope they somehow incorporate Cream into this.

The thing about Cream is SEGA Didn't give archie permission to use her in STH they only allowed her to be in SonicX, because that comic was essintally segasonic. Theres a few other characters like that too they can't use Mephilis from 2k6 or Chip or any of the robots/ enimes used in sonic Unleashed. Plus there still Trying to Get the liscense to use Dr.Nega (eggman nega) in the comic, for now they can just mention him. But besides that they can use any sonic character from the Various continuites & games how & when they want.

I don't really see how Cream would enhance the Archie Sonicverse. She was practically useless in Sonic X.

She could put band-aids on their boo-boos or give them biiiiiiiiiiiiiig hugs to raise their morale. ^__________________^
Yeah, she's useless. I hope she stays stuck in Sonic X land where she belongs.

Well, they've included even more useless game characters in the past...
*cough*Bomb and Heavy*cough*
Though, yeah, I'd rather have Tails Doll than Cream. Just seems a bit odd how she seemingly got skipped over when it came to incorporating newer characters.

Bomb could explode. Cream can't do squat.

I oddly can't find Sonic Universe anywhere, not even at the places that I know had Sonic X...
Guess I'll have to finally put down a subscription to a comic, because I'll otherwise have to trek down to the comic book shop in the city every month (if even they have it, it's the only place I haven't checked).

You may have to subscribe soon; the second issue is due to be shipped out in a few days, so issue 1 might not be sent to you.
I really never had a chance to read any of these Sonic Comic books. Should I start off with this "Sonic Universe"? Or stick with the "Sonic the hedgehog" thats been running?

Will future issues of Sonic Universe sometimes feature solo stories with certain Sonic the Hedgehog comic characters?

Either or. Sonic Universe is more of a supplemental book to Sonic the Hedgehog, the main book. I'd say check 'em both out.

Shadow is featured in issues 1-4, Mobius 30 Years Later in issues 5-8, and Knuckles starting with issue 9.

Sonic Universe #2 takes place between Sonic the Hedgehog #198 and #199, so I think its better to collect both Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic Universe.
Also, if you're new to the Sonic comics, it'd be a good idea to start collecting the Sonic Archives Trade Paperbacks since they're reprints of the older Sonic comics.
Questions:
How faithful are the Sonic comics to the original games?
The story: Good, bad? Which is your favorite? And can you give me a quick run down whats going on?
What did the comic book added? I see a lot of characters/plots that are not base in the Sonic video game.

The stories are pretty good. The early issues were very light-hearted with slapstick comedy, but they got darker and serious later on. The original Robotnik was wiped away from existance in Sonic the Hedgehog #50 and a roboticized version of Robotnik from another zone, Robo-Robotnik, took over around Sonic the Hedgehog #74 under the name Dr. Eggman.

It's about time they brought Omega into the Archie Sonic universe and it looks like this issue takes place during Sonic the Hedgehog #199.

Haven't read an issue since '01.

There seem to be a lot of people out there who haven't read the comic in a while.
The comic is doing better than ever. All of the writers and artists that brought the book down for the last several years (Karl Bollers, Ken Penders, Ron Lim) are gone, and longtime fans Ian Flynn and Tracy Yardley have taken over as head writer and artist, respectively, along with several other young newcomers, including Matt Herms, who has recently taken over the book as head colorist.
Also, not only do we have a second supplementary Sonic comic continuing monthly (Sonic Universe), we also have Sonic Archives and Sonic Selects, which are reprinting all of the old, rare issues. Plus, the last few years Sonic has participated in free comic book day, and an encyclopedia of the series is set to come out this November.
So yeah. Now is a good time to be a Sonic fan.

Interesting...
BTW, Is Universe just a more focused re-telling of past Sonic games, or is there more to it?

Its a spin-off and it pretty much focuses on characters other than Sonic. So far we know that issues #1-4 will focus on Shadow, issues #5-8 will be a story set 30 years into the future, and issues #9-12 will focus on Knuckles.

Yeah. Pretty much think of Sonic Universe as an ongoing monthly mini-series.

Wow, that Sonic kid and what I'm guessing is older Julie-Su on the cover of Sonic Universe #5 both look very Art Mawhinney-ish, in a good way. And that off-panel comic was pretty entertaining... Hmm. Maybe I should take another look at the comic. I was a devoted subscriber from issue #29, after having bought a few issues before that, but after #50 I gradually felt that it went downhill, until I found myself just hating most of it by about #130, which is around where I stopped. (interesting that I stayed with it for almost exactly 100 issues)
In retrospect, the earlier pre-Endgame stories that I thought I preferred weren't really as good as I thought, and the post-Endgame/ Mobius World Tour storylines weren't as bad as I thought, either. But Once Robo-Robotnik took over as the villain (I still hate calling him Eggman), I do think it went drastically downhill, especially with the lame attempts at imitating a manga art style with non-manga character designs, and the long stretches where nothing much was accomplished for the characters.
But anyway, yeah, I'm tempted to check out the latest few issues. I've been getting the Free Comic Book Day ones anyway, cause, you know, they're free.

Yeah, since Sonic #160, the stories have been getting better (especially since current head writer Ian Flynn and current head artist Tracy Yardley! hopped onboard)
Here's what we had since #160:
-Sonic #160: Bean and Bark's comic debut.
-Sonic #162 -164: The return of Ixis Naugas; the end of the Ancient Walkers and birth of the Neo Ancient Walkers.
-Sonic #168 -169: General D'Coolete passes away; ADAM possesses Tommy Turtle through nano machines; Tommy sacrifices himself to destroy ADAM.
-Sonic #170: Feist (huge panda being) gathers a different colored Chaos Emerald from each of the seven planets and rewards one to who can complete his tasks (like a special stage); Tails reunites with his parents and brings them back to Mobius.
-Sonic #171: Shadows rediscovers his past with the help of NICOLE and stops working for Eggman.
-Sonic #172: Fiona breaks up with Sonic and joins Scourge (the Chaos-powered Evil Sonic).
-Sonic #173-174: The wedding of Bunnie and Antoine.
-Sonic #175-177: The destruction of Knothole and the birth of New Mobotropolis.
-Sonic #180-184: The return of Enerjak.
-Sonic #189-197: The showdown between the Freedom Fighters and Scourge.
-Sonic #198-200: The final showdown with the Eggman Empire.
Ian Flynn and Tracy Yardley are becoming the Chris Claremont and Jim Lee of the Sonic comic. :)
