I was surfing Seanbaby's Superfriends website ( http://seanbaby.com/super.htm ) when I noticed that Joker didn't appear to be a member of the Legion of Doom! Is this true? And why the heck wouldn't he be? What were the writers in those days thinking???

It's true. Joker was not a member of the Legion of Doom. I don't know what the writers were thinking, but I'm sure they had their reasons.

Wasn't the Joker back to killing people by the time Superfriends was on the air? I'll bet that's why he wasn't included.
Oh well, they had Scarecrow and the Riddler. Batman was well covered.

Toyman was sort of a Superman/Batman villain. They put better members in the Legion of Doom then the Joker like Sinestro, Grodd, Giganta, and Capt. Cold.

I believe what nothing is hinting at is that the Joker is more of an uninvited guest. I guess Lex never asked him to join but he just showed up anyway. Sounds like the Joker to me.

According to an Alex Toth animation sketch book, the early designs of the Legion of Doom showed the Joker (and the Penguin) as a member of the Legion of Doom but I guess he ultimately was dropped from the line-up probably due to Filmation having the cartoon rights to the character at the time for their New Adventures of Batman series. They instead included Riddler and Scarecrow, two villains that didn't appear in that series. It wasn't until 1985 when the Joker made his Superfriends debut after reruns of that show had long ceased airing (Superfriends had a weird production schedule after 1981). Ironically, Challenge of the Superfriends was supposed to be the Superfriends debut of Captain Marvel and Dr. Silvna but they were dropped for that same reason, even though Filmation didn't use the Marvel characters for an animated series until three years later in the Kid Super Power Hour with Shazam (Both characters did appear in Hanna Barbara's Legends of the Superheroes, although CBS was airing reruns of the live action Shazam on and off during that time).

No, Joker isn't a member of the Injustice Gang. He was not "invited" by Luthor.
That's no surprise. *I* never get invited to those Metropolis Picture Store showings either... even if I'm also the best in the world at what I do. Ah, well...

Capt. Cold, lame rip off of Mr. Freeze? Well I hated them both anyway. What comic was Capt. Cold from?

Capt. Cold first appeared as a Flash villian in the late 50's-early 60's, a few years after Mr. Freeze.
However, Freeze and Cold both debuted after the Icicle, a cold-gun carrying Golden Age Green Lantern villian from the 40's.
Incidentally, a "pseudo" Icicle (named Dr. Blizzard) will appear in the JL two-parter "Legends."
