I just picked this up today, and it's a great series and all, but I can't help but feel a little ripped off. The book only collects the first four issues, and it's $12.95? I thought one of the POINTS of these TPBs was to be a break in the price? I specifically waited for the first few issues to be collected in a paperback rather than buy them. Now I've just paid $12.95 for a book that collects four issues which collectively would have cost me $9.74. Do Marvel TPBs usually screw you as such?

One partial reason for the higher price is the glossy paper they use in the reprints. The regular comics use regular paper, but Marvel ups the ante by using glossy. But don't worry - prices in their TRP are being cut by 2 - 3 dollars beginning in either May or June. Apparently they are listening to fans are will be dropping prices on some current tpb and any upcoming tpb by 2 - 3 dollars.

Consider yourself blessed. The E is for Extinction TPB is $12.95 too and it only collects 3 issues.

I thought it had 4 in it: 114-117. Because, really, issue #117 was a part of the storyline. It also had Grant Morrison's X-Men proposal in it.

Personally, I've stayed away from Marvel's trades, except for maybe the Ultimate titles, because they are roughly the same price. I can't wait for the price cut, because I'd rather buy some of my comics in trades (the weekly buy is just getting to be too much) and that way I can buy my stories whenever I wanted, instead of getting them now because there's little chance they'll be on the shelves next week.

Ah, okay.

About that price thing, I did some math on recent Marvel TPBs. It was a nice diversion.

(Exiles, New X-Men, etc) 4 issues for $12.95 = $3.23 per issue
(Punisher: Welcome Back, Frank) 12 issues for $24.95 = $2.08 per issue
(Punisher: Army of One) 7 issues for $15.95 = $2.27 per issue
(Daredevil: Born Again reissue) 7 issues for $17.95 = $2.56 per issue.
(Ultimate Spider-Man: Learning Curve) 6 issues for $14.95 = $2.49 an issue

So to recap:
X-related titles are ridiculously more expensive than the others
How did Born Again get so costly? It couldn't have been that much before.
Comics were better in the old days when 200 glossy pages sold for $14.95
