I'm a big DCAU fan, but I've never watched an episode of Static Shock (Or The Zeta Project), but I do plan on eventually watching the DCAU crossover episodes.
Do any of y'all recommend this show as worth watching for a DCAU fan?
Does this show have a serious mature tone like the other DCAU shows? Are Bruce Timm, Paul Dini, Alan Burnett and other regular DCAU Production castmembers involved?

The shows not bad, it and Zeta are the low points of the DCAU and Static has some painful episodes like any "Live guest star" episode. Anyway watch a few episodes and see if you like it. At least watch the DC hero cross over episodes if you don't like them don't even bother with the rest of the series.

I loved all the DC crossover episodes. I think there was a couple of Batman ones, a Batman Beyond one, a Justice League one, a Superman one, a Green Lantern one. The rest of the episodes are kind of 50/50. Just stay clear of an episode called Hoops Squad, or something like that.

Unlike other DCAU shows, there isn't an abundance of silence, grit, and death brought up a lot. It's sort of like Batman Beyond, but not as dark. The colors are always pretty bright, and they have some bad episodes like those Romeo and NBA Players episodes, but overall it's a nice little show. If this was a DCAU show from the beginning, it's probably be exactly like Batman Beyond, but since it just "became" one, it stands out above the others.
As a fan of the DCU, no, I didn't care much for this show. I admit to not having seen a lot of it, but I felt the central character himself was too annoying and full of himself.
He attempted to try to hard to be cool, which generally made him all the more annoying. As far as the guest spots go, there's not really a lot to any of them - a lot of them seem to make the guest stars come across as stupid in order to make Static look more competant.
From what I remember, the Green Lantern guest spot was the best of them, with the Superman one being the worst.

To be honest, they both suck. Static's decent in its own right, but as a DCAU show, it really blows overall. Imagine season one STAS-era Jimmy Olsen getting superpowers. Not turn him into an urban stereotype.
Zeta is just a pain in the ass. Season 1 was like the second episode of Batman Beyond that had him, only more repetitive and not as interesting. Don't remember what season 2 was like.
This sparks another question: If there were a DCAU "crossovers" DVD special set that had all of the series' crossover/guest star episodes, would anybody buy that set instead of Zeta and Static Shock dvds? To be honest, all I want Static for is for those crossover eps and the eps that constitute his origin.

Ooooh! I would like that!

I would watch the 7 crossover episodes, you can skip the series entirely otherwise.
In terms of crossovers:
Batman/Tim Drake and Joker
Batman and Poison Ivy and Harley
Superman and Toyman
Batman Beyond with the Cobra's
Justice League Pt. 1 with Brainiac
Justice League Pt. 2 with Brainiac
Green Lantern with Sinestro
Watch those 7 eps.

Seriously, a show doesn't always have to be edgy to be good. If you watch it and expect DCAU quality then you will be disappointed. Watch it without expectations of the DCAU and you should at least get some entertainment out of it.
The show is not on par with the rest of the DCAU however it is still a good show. It has a few bad episodes but overall its mostly good.

I think the crossover episodes are some of the worst in the series actually. Except for Future Shock I didn't like any of them. So don't watch the crossover episodes to get a "feel" of the show. Those are some of the worst episodes.
As for Zeta Project I've only watched the first episode and the crossover and I enjoyed them a lot.

Meh Im not a fan of the show, in fact I've said some harsh things about it in the past. If you want you could watch the crossovers as they're more tolerable..to an extent and gives a taste of what the show is about. But yea his guest spot in JLU was far more entertaining than his whole show for me.

I agree with you. I wouldn't go into Static Shock expecting it to be like the quality of the rest of the DCAU. It's generally a light and fun show, at least from how I understand it. While I think that most of the crossover episodes are enjoyable, I would watch some of the early episodes to get a real feel for the series. If you don't like it from there, then I suggest to either watch the crossovers to see if you like those better. If that doesn't work, then the series might just not work for you.

I can understand that. Some of his crossovers, mostly the ones with pop stars and the Hoop Squad, were kind of weak. I enjoyed most of superhero crossovers, mainly the JL, Batman Beyond and the GL crossovers.

Season two of Zeta IMO was a huge improvement over the first season.

Agreed, it was a serious jump. The only problem is The Zeta Project has no real ending. Its bittersweet in a way since Zeta finally meets Dr. Selig in the last ep but his ship gets shot into the water.

yeah those episodes werent bad especially the future shock episode which I actually thought was realy enjoyable.
As for Zeta I've only seen the BB crossover and that was decent enough IMO.

I really liked Static Shock. I agree that it's not like most of the other DCAU shows but it wasn't supposed to be. I like the fact that as a new hero, Static screws up a lot. I wouldn't rate it as highly as the other DCAU shows but I still like it. One of the more interesting aspects of the show is how the city of Dakota gained all of it's mutants; they even have a logical reason why most of them are villains.
My favorite episode is Hard As Nails. It's a cross-over episode with Batman.
My least favorite episode is Hoop Squad. Not only is it an awful story, Static is completely out of character. I can only figure this was a lame attempt to spin-off a show starring NBA players as superheroes or something. The NBA players made lousy voice-actors, too. This is the only episode that I do not recommend watching. The episodes with Lil Romeo and Shaq are not brilliant but there is some logic to the stories. For example, in the Shaq cross-over, Shaq knows Static's father and comes to visit. Shaq doesn't get super-powers or even do anything unbelievable.

I never watched Static Shock, but can someone please tell me how Batman and Robin guest appeared on one episode and then Terry guest appeared on another? Doesn't that just tear holes in the DCAU timeline or something?

Personally I would recommend the first two seasons, from the third season Hard as Nails, Static in Africa, Consequences, Troubled Squared, Flashback, and Blast From the Past, and only Fallen Hero from the 4th season. I personally think that this series is underated and it isn't as bad as everyone says it is. It was better at the "contemporary teen superhero" than Batman Beyond. It started off very strong with good episodes and in keeping with the spirit of the original comic. In the last two seasons they pretty much dropped all of the storylines that they developed in the first two seasons and the series became a victim of the corporate money making machine and deviates from the comic.
I would watch the 7 crossover episodes, you can skip the series entirely otherwise.

I've been watching some old episodes of Static lately and I must admit it's a lot better than I remember. Certainly not the best DCAU series, but it reminds me of STAS in its tone.

I enjoyed the show (aside from a few crossovers with real life people [Hoop Sqaud and others]) Most of the villains are explained as all having one origin. It also makes sense why most became villains (they were all gangbangers and bad people BEFORE the Big Bang. Heck, I would say that the gas drove some of the gangsters crazy when they became supervillains (Shiv). If this show was treated as a DCAU show when it began, it would have probably have been better (with all of the dark tones of superpowered gang members it could have thrown out). Alas, it didn't start out that way so it shouldn't be graded on the same level as say BTAS and STAS. However it was indeed a fun little romp...
