Welcome to the 21st century, folks:

WASHINGTON (AFP) – The Twitter accounts of US president-elect Barack Obama, singer Britney Spears and other prominent figures were hacked on Monday and fake messages sent out in their names on the micro-blogging service.

Twitter founder Biz Stone, in a post on the official company blog, said a total of 33 Twitter accounts had been hacked including those of Obama and Rick Sanchez, a CNN television anchor with tens of thousands of followers.

"We immediately locked down the accounts and investigated the issue," Stone said, nothing that because of "transition issues" Obama has not updated his Twitter account since winning the US presidential election in November.

"These accounts were compromised by an individual who hacked into some of the tools our support team uses to help people do things like edit the email address associated with their Twitter account," Stone said.

According to reports on technology blogs, other prominent "Twitter-ers" whose accounts were hacked included those of Fox News television and singer Spears.

The message from the fake Obama invited recipients to take a survey and win 500 dollars worth of gas while the CNN anchor purportedly told followers that he was "high on crack" and would probably not be coming into work on Monday.

Twitter was also the target of a phishing attack over the weekend in which scamsters attempted to obtain passwords and other personal information from Twitter users.

Stone said Monday's hacking incident was unrelated to the phishing scam.
Twitter, which allows users to post real-time updates of 140 characters or less, has an estimated four to five million users according to a recent study.
Launched in August 2006, it has been embraced by a number of celebrities including Obama, who has more than 150,000 followers, and four-time NBA champion Shaquille O'Neal of the Phoenix Suns.

It's a micro-blogging site.

Basically you post things like you normally would, except you do it in 100 words or less.

Huh. I used to do live journal, and I was one of the first in my area to have a myspace page, but you know, I've never heard of micro-blogging. Maybe it's because I have more of a life now than I did back in 2003.

Sorry, that came out snotty. I mean no offense to anyone.

Twiiter is just a continous stream of myspace status updates.

The beauty of twitter are the clients and cell phone access. You can twit (ie post an update) by text message from any phone.

You never know what kind of stuff the Internet throws at you.

It should be easy to find the culprit. Just do a search on every Twitter account posting from the day of the incident and find out who posted a message like "5:28pm: I just totally hacked Obama's Twitter."

...

Hrmm... "Twitter" sounds vaguely dirty.
