Don't Sound Stupid... Stop Saying this Word! (http://www.freshbite.info/fnews_1217811316_10620.htm)

The Academy of Linguistic Awareness could stop sounding stupid and avoid joining two independent clauses together that are not linked with a coordinating or subordinating conjunction. Comma splices are, like, totally ironic.

They spelled "academy" wrong.

Well, like, I can only, like, speak for myself, but I've never, like, used the word 'like' like that, y'know? ;)

Wow, it's the condescending public awareness ad campaign I've always dreamed about but never had the money or guts to pull off!

"Like" is, like, SO nineties.

I think "You know" is the new "like". I hear it from news pundits all the time. I blame the candidates of the 2008 campaign for introducing "You know" and "Look..." into our subconscious vernacular.

Replacing all words in between the "likes" with a dot...

like.like.like.like-like.like.like.like.like.like.
like.like.like-like.
like.like.like.like.like.like.like.like.like.like.like.like.

Great scott, it's morse code!

We need to worry more about "um" taking over than "like".

Yeah, I've been guilty of doing that, like, a lot.

My speech teacher always told us stop saying "like", "um", "you know", and "uh", when we speak, but its hard not to do it when your just casually talking with friends.

I say "like" and "uh" alot but not as much as that lady does.

Its been a personal goal of mine for women to stop sounding like airheaded Valley Girls for the past decade. But that to much work for one man.

VALSPEAK IS ALIVE AND WELL:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valley_girl

Examples:
As if – lit. "as if" except it does not use a subject; expresses disbelief.
*****in' - adj. slang for excellent; first-rate.
Whatever! - short for "whatever you say"; sarcastic comeback (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comeback).
Barf me out! - "So disgusting it makes me want to vomit."
Fer shur – lit. "For sure"
Betch – lit. "*****"
Totally – "I agree" or "completely."
Grody to the max! – "As gross as he/she/it can be."
Like, oh my God – can be used many ways; expresses shock (OMG for short).
I’m suuure! or I'm so sure – "I'm absolutely positive," but usually used sarcastically.
Tre - A synonym for "very" (derived from French "très")
Tripendicular! - It can mean either "awesome" or a drug high.
Betty - An attractive woman.
So - Very; used too often and said with too much emphasis. "He's so not cute!"
Baldwin - An attractive man.
Seriously - Frequent interjection of approval.
Gag me with a spoon! - expression of disgust.Well, i know most of what im reading hasnt been spoken out of a girls mouth in over a decade, so Valspeak will maybe someday end.

"Tripendicular", where was I when that was spoken, thats just funny to hear someone say...

Gag me with a spoon! - expression of disgust.I haven't heard "grody to the max" or "gag me with a spoon" since the 80's, and even then I didn't know anybody personally who said those. But during that time, those were all over television.

"Tripendicular" is new to me.

I'm personally glad that I haven't anyone call someone a "Betty" or a "Baldwin" since Clueless went off the air; I found those expressions extremely wannabe cool and obnoxious. Whenever I would hear Cher, Dionne and Amber say those terms on Clueless, I would think, "Come on! Nobody really calls hot girls 'Bettys' and hot guys 'Baldwins'!" That sounded like something that 40-year-old writers came up with that they hoped would be imitated in real life.

I'm ashamed to admit it, but I do sometimes say "seriously" in casual conversation.

I don't mean to point any fingers or offend anybody, but I noticed that the majority of the people that use "like" every other word are the prissy-preppy teenage girls. Once again, no offense....it could be considered a stereotype, but from the people that I've been around, it sure as heck didn't seem like it.

Personally, I don't appreciate being told how to speak by an academy that I've never even heard of before. Is the misuse of the word "like" really worthy of a national ad campaign?

That is so wrong on so many levels. (That's the correct way to say it).

(Oh wait.. you want me to sound stupid? I will then add the word 'like' to my last comment..

That's like so wrong on like so many levels. (Yep it makes you sound stupid alright).

Okay welcome to the sounding stupid club (like totally).

and yeah it sounds like "Val-speak"
and I thought "Eubonics was bad... I guess this is another form of "Eubonic Plague".

Ah, yes. The dreaded "You know" that likes to slip and ruin a job interview. I manage to avoid saying "Uhhh..." and "Ummm..." but someway, somehow, the dreaded "You know" manages to slip out of my mouth.

Barf me out! - "So disgusting it makes me want to vomit."

That sounds like a sex act. Like, "I'd definitely barf her out."

I admit it. I use these frequently:

As if
Whatever!
Totally
Like, oh my God
I’m suuure! or I'm so sure
So
Seriously

Personally, I don't appreciate being told how to speak by an academy that I've never even heard of before. Is the misuse of the word "like" really worthy of a national ad campaign?Yes, it really, REALLY, is.

People always tell me how much swear words annoy them, but I find the over usage of that particular word far more annoying.

And yes, people really do talk just like this:

Well, like, I can only, like, speak for myself, but I've never, like, used the word 'like' like that, y'know? ;)

I've only done this habit once or twice in my life, when it comes to other people I can cope with it though they're kinda hard to listen to as their sentence structure gets fowled up, its kinda like driving with tires that have concrete in the treads.

I'm on the tail end of the valley girl speak, so I only say "um". But my 54 year old mom still says "gag me with a spoon".

Well I use Um, dude, and seriously most of the time. I've been trying to curb Um, but only because it makes you sound uncertain.

Pilmedium

The problem with trying to give up "um" or like" if you are accustomed to adding it into a sentence is that it may be replaced with a pause by default, providing a chance for someone to interrupt. If the words do not flow smoothly without such add-ins, making them do so may require a substantial change in thought patterns. It is not always as simple as trying to avoid one word.

I misuse the word "like" whenever I'm trying to poke fun at something.

I also like the phrase "That'll learn 'em."

I was in school today and decided to count how many times I could hear someone say the word "like" before the bell rang.

I lost count at 267 O_o
