The Powerpuff Girls Movie will be released July 3, 2002, by Warner Bros. Pictures, and tells the story of how the world’s cutest superheroes came to be the pride of Townsville.

Supervised by the show’s creator, Craig McCracken, the film will be the first-ever feature based on an original Cartoon Network series. This collaboration also marks the first production of a full-length animated film at Cartoon Network Studios in Burbank, California.

The Powerpuff Girls Movie opens with Professor Utonium gathering all the ingredients to create the perfect little girl - sugar, spice and everything nice. But when his lab assistant, a monkey named Jojo, causes the accidental addition of Chemical X to the mix, the Professor ends up with not one, but three, perfect, though powerful, little girls.

After inadvertently wrecking Townsville in a superpowered game of tag, the Girls are treated as outcasts. In their efforts to win back the hearts of the people of Townsville, The Powerpuff Girls are tricked into abetting Jojo's plot to take over the city.

Cartoon Network began a series of on-air and off-channel promotions supporting the launch of The Powerpuff Girls Movie in January with the "You Can Be an Artist" contest. Cartoon Network asked fans to create a "family portrait" of the Girls and Professor Utonium. More than 15,000 entries were received. Ten finalists were selected, and the winning portrait was chosen through an online vote on the official move site, www.PowerpuffGirlsMovie.com. (http://www.powerpuffgirlsmovie.com/) The winner's drawing will appear in the film.

Beginning in May and continuing through the movie's premiere on July 3, Cartoon Network will blast audiences with increasing daily doses of Chemical X. Cartoon Network will add weekday strips of The Powerpuff Girls, airing the adventures of Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup several times daily. Both Cartoon Network and the Kids' WB! will team up to present all-new episodes of The Powerpuff Girls in June, leading up to the feature premiere. In addition, Cartoon Network will have off-channel partnerships in place with top retailers and licensing and promotional partners to support the launch of The Powerpuff Girls Movie.

"We think The Powerpuff Girls Movie will satisfy a broad audience, not just boys and girls but also the teen and adult fans of this smart, clever and visually stunning property."

“The Powerpuff Girls has become one of television’s hottest and most critically recognized properties,” Lorenzo di Bonaventura, president, Worldwide Production, Warner Bros. Pictures added. “Bubbles, Blossom and Buttercup are icons of cool and we are delighted to work with Cartoon Network in bringing their unique ‘girl power’ to the big screen for the first time.”

An Emmy Award-winner and named one of TV Guide’s “Top 10 New Kids Shows,” after its debut in 1998, The Powerpuff Girls airs daily on Cartoon Network. Townsville can be a dangerous place, forever subject to the criminal whims of villains like the Amoeba Boys, the Gangreen Gang and Fuzzy Lumpkins, but the dainty, daring and downright dynamite crayon-carrying crimefighters come to the rescue every time their hometown is threatened. But no matter what challenge they face, The Powerpuff Girls always manage to save the day before bedtime.

The Powerpuff Girls toys, apparel and other merchandise have skyrocketed in popularity nationwide, selling almost $1 billion at retail since hitting store shelves.
