Comic Book Culture fans, here it is:

The 6th Annual Toon Zone Readers Awards!!

The Nominations Thread (http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?t=220768) has wrapped up, and now it's time to cast your actual votes! This special "End of the Year" event has occurred 5 times previously, and we're out to continue the tradition!

For those that want to take a look back at prior year's voting events, you can check out:

1. The 1st CBC Readers Awards thread. (http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?t=95913)

2. The 2nd CBC Readers Awards (http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?t=127628)

3. The 3rd CBC Readers Awards (http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?t=157070)

4. The 4th CBC Readers Awards (http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?t=180569)

5. The 5th CBC Readers Awards (http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?t=202808)

And now to cast this year's votes...Unlike the Nominations Thread, you are only allowed to cast one vote per category. The 1st few categories have choices that you should pick from in casting your vote, (these are your nominations from the previous thread)...now if you don't like any of the nominations, in addition to voting for a nominee, you can also make an "honorable mention" for a choice you'd rather vote for, but it's from the pool of nominees that we will declare winners.

And remember, once again, this year we will be counting the votes for the top categories, and the winners of those categories will receive a Theme Week dedicated to the winner in January/February of 2009!

1. Best Continuing Comic Book: Action Comics
2. Best Writer: Geoff Johns
3. Best Artist: Gary Frank

4. Favorite Hero/Heroine: Superman
5. Favorite Villian: Joker
6. Favorite Team: The Justice League
7. Best Limited Series/Mini-Series: Secret Invasion

8. Best Multi-issue Storyline or Story arc, (in an ongoing series)
9. Best One-Shot: Justice League The New Frontier Special (I think some people might have forgot about this one ;) )
10. Best Cover: Batman #682 (http://comicbookdb.com/graphics/comic_graphics/1/307/152850_20081205005250_large.jpg) & Amazing Spider-Man #573 (Colbert Variant) (http://comicbookdb.com/graphics/comic_graphics/1/294/144620_20081015174629_large.jpg)
11. Best Cover Artist
12. Best New Title of the last 12 months
13. Best New Character, (male or female)
14. Best Supporting Character: Jim Gordon (The Dark Knight)
15. Best Fight Scene
16. Best Romantic Couple
17. Most Improved Book: Action Comics. I enjoyed the Legion of Super-Heroes arc, but I felt it was a slow start for Johns and Frank. I wanted Superman, with his supporting cast, his villians, and take place in his present. After that, words really can't describe the greatness of Action Comics. At least after the Legion story and before "New Krypton".
18. Worst Book: All Star Batman & Robin
19. Most Underachieving Artist
20. Least Enjoyable Writer: FRANK MILLER. For the innapropriate langauge controversy in All Star Batman #10 and the upcomming The Spirit movie.
21. Least Enjoyable Story: Speed Racer: Chronicles of the Racer. This was just dissapointing and stupid. Aside from that, why IDW is investing time into Speed Racer: The Next Generation is beyond me.
22. Best Comic Book Related Merchandise:
23. Best Publisher: DC

wow. left alot of choices blank, i'll get back to it later. there is a reason why i'll leave some choices blank or not say anything about my choice. for the past 3 (counting this one) years i've had the feeling that comics in general have been mediocre at best. i have an indifferent attitude because nothing is happening. even when things do happen, it's been already done before and i'm tired of it. i've had enough of "life changing" events, crossovers, ect. seriously, what is "dark reign"? guess what marvel, i don't care. secret invasion concludes and before you can put down the last secret invasion issue you have some irrelevant post secret invasion crossover which will no doubt lead into the event of 2009. which as of now i don't care. same for you dc. what is the next crisis you have in mind? "future crisis"?

the only comics right now i can say that i'm truely excited about are/is action comics. even then i still don't have much to say. this year i've gotten more excited with idw publishing (star trek, speed racer, transformers, ghostbusters) and dynamite entertainment (man with no name) than i ever did with marvel and dc this past year. things just seem to get "worse" every year.

i really don't know what i want dc or marvel to do right now. everything they do seems too gimicky. i just want stories with a start and finish. not one big elaborate epic that was planned before a writer begins a lenghty run and spans over course of 60 issues, 8 different story arcs, and various other titles the publisher publishes.

hopefully 2009 will prove better. at the rate i feel we've been going, it doesn't look like it.

*Surprisingly: "Amazing Spider-Man" is on the list of best ongoing comic book and not "Incredible Hercules"
*Didn't know there is so little love to the new "Captain America" as a character/hero/Flag carrier
*Since "Booster Gold" is so great and "Chucky Dixon" wrote some of it I might read it, after all; Chucky is one of the better writers of this time

Actually, the "Death of Captain America" arc actually got me back into Marvel Comics. Easily the best Cap story every (for me, at least), and at this point, I wouldn't mind it a bit of Steve never came back and Bucky stayed.

But Lantern's "Secret Origin" was just really, really good.

I meant to get around to posting my picks before now, but real life kind of got in the way. Anyway, there's some tough choices this year, so let's get to this, (and add some commentary!):

1. Best Continuing Comic Book:

B. Action Comics, (written by Geoff Johns, with art by Gary Frank).
Without a doubt, the biggest surprise DC title of the year was "Action Comics", which found new life with Geoff Johns and Gary Frank at the helm. Gone was the taint of the never ending "Last Son" arc, instead we got stories that represented Superman at his best, and artwork that reminded us of the greatness of the Christopher Reeve era of Superman movies.

2. Best Writer:

D. Geoff Johns, (writer of Green Lantern, Justice Society of America, Action Comics, and co-writer of Booster Gold).

See what I wrote above about "Action Comics", but also apply that Booster Gold, Green Lantern, Justice Society of America, etc....the guy's on fire, (and he can actually use DC continuity to his advantage, instead of ignoring it as a hindrance)!

3. Best Artist:

D. Gary Frank, (artist on Action Comics)
This was the hardest category to vote for, this time around, as Mark Bagely, Dan Jurgens, and Marcos Martin all swept me off my feet, but Gary Grank deserves to win for this panel alone (http://forums.toonzone.net/showpost.php?p=2901857&postcount=3).

4. Favorite Hero/Heroine:

D. Booster Gold, (starring in Booster Gold).

What can I say? I always vote for the little guy, (it's who I voted for last year as well). :)

5. Favorite Villian:
A. The Skrulls, (starring in the pages of Secret Invasion and all Secret Invasion tie-ins)

Tough call, between the villains of Secret Invasion, and the guy who ended up "winning the war", (Norman Osborn). In the end, I have to go with the Green Men, not the Green Goblin. There was so many different, yet unique depictions of the Skrulls this year by various Marvel writers and artists, you couldn't help but find at least one title with Skrulls in it that made you smile. :)

6. Favorite Team:

C. The Thunderbolts, (Norman Osborn, Songbird, Radioactive Man, Venom, Bullseye, Penance, Moonstone, and Swordsman).

I'm mostly voting for this time because of Christos Gage's work on the title following Warren Ellis' departure. Under Gage, the characters seemed more in tradition with their previous depictions, and the "Secret Invasion" tie-in was really fun as well.

7. Best Limited Series/Mini-Series:

B. Marvel: 1985, (written by Mark Millar, artwork by Tommy Lee Edwards).

If the vote was for the entire "Secret Invasion" event, and not for the "SI" mini-series alone, I might've voted the other way, but as it stands, I'll vote for "Marvel:1985". Sorry, but the main "Secret Invasion" mini-series wasn't anywhere near as good as the various tie-ins, and "1985" had a great deal of nostalgia and charm to it, thus overcoming it's flaws, (I'll need to start a talkback thread for it eventually).

And now for the rest of the categories, (again, only one vote per category please):

American Comic Book Related Categories:

8. Best Multi-issue Storyline or Story arc, (in an ongoing series):
Ghost Rider #20-23 "Hell-Bent and Heaven-Bound". Jason Aaron exploded onto the pages of Ghost Rider with this opening story arc, making for a wild acid trip of a story! Runner Up: "Dead Mothers" in the pages of "Scalped"!

9. Best One-Shot, (a stand alone comic book, or a one-issue story from an ongoing series).
Astro City: "Beautie" one-shot. Kurt Busiek's lone venture back into Astro City this year was worth it, featuring a tearful story of an andriod's search for her creator.

10. Best Cover:
Solomon Kane #1
http://images.darkhorse.com/covers/100/14/14921.jpg (http://images.darkhorse.com/covers/400/14/14921.jpg)

There was too many to choose from, (including several from my pick for "Best Cover Artist" below) but I eventually settled on picking this cover by John Cassaday. Seeing Kane kneeling in prayer, with his flintlock pistols still in hand, this is a great summary of what Kane's all about: divine retribution.

11. Best Cover Artist: Marko Djurdjevic. It seems Marvel's relying on him single-handly to do covers for all Marvel comics these days, and for good reason! Check out one of my favorites by him:

Ghost Rider #22:

12. Best New Title of the last 12 months: Captain Britain and MI:13. FINALLY, somebody figures out how to tell a decent story featuring Captain Britain, (we had to suffer through 2 different "Excalibur" titles by Christ Claremont to get here though, didn't we)?

13. Best New Character, (male or female): Screwball, (from the pages of Amazing Spider-Man). Perhaps Dan Slott's biggest strength in writing Amazing Spider-Man is the new characters he introduces. Screwball's a fun villian: she's not another dark psychopath, just a fun-loving attention seeker out to cause Spidey trouble!

14. Best Supporting Character: Amadeus Cho. He's not the star of the "Incredible Hercules" book, but he does steal the show more often than not!

15. Best Fight Scene: Hercules vs. the Skrull Gods in "Incredible Hercules #120". On the Skrull God's homeworld, (circled by the dead gods from all the worlds the Skrulls have conquered) Herc fights to the death!

16. Best Romantic Couple: Scott Summers and Emma Frost. This was another tough category, (it's also the first time in a while that Peter and MJ can't be considered...well, unless you go with Peter and MJ from "Ultimate Spider-Man"). And Luke Cage and Jessica Jones have spent most of the year seperated and arguing. So for my tastes, the two leaders of the X-Men have shown more commitment and love than any other couple.

17. Most Improved Book: Ghost Rider. Having Jason Aaron on board as writer has turned this book around into a must read!

18. Worst Book: Hulk. There's really no excuse for this travesty: After the wildly successful "World War Hulk" mini-series, Marvel follows up with Jeph Loeb's silly smashfest, (complete with a return to "Stupid Hulk"). And by this point, does anyone really care who the Red Hulk is?!?

19. Most Underachieving Artist: Ed McGuinness. Really, I don't expect a masterpiece from him, but does 1/3 of the story need to be splash pages?!?
20. Least Enjoyable Writer: Jeph Loeb. See my comments for "Worst Book" above.

21. Least Enjoyable Story:
Squadron Supreme Vol. 2: Thanks, Marvel, for ruining the great concept JMS and Gary Frank set up a few years back!

22. Best Comic Book Related Merchandise: The "Incredible Hulk" movie, (and by extension, the DVD)! Move over "Dark Knight" and "Iron Man", I know who the real winner of superhero movies was this year!

23. Best Publisher: Boom Studios. I'm not going to reward Marvel or DC for their behavior, (the price gouging on Marvel's part, and the incomprehensible mess that is DC's continuity surrounding "Final Crisis)...so instead, I'll once again tip my hat to Boom Studios, for releasing such impressive Cthulhu stories, (and some of their other stuff is starting to attract my attention as well)!

Other categories, (because superheroes don't dominate the industry!)

24. Best Manga Book: Vampire Hunter D manga, (FINALLY! But these are just japanese adaptations of the books, wait till the all new stories come out next year from "Devil's Due")!

25. Best Newspaper Comic Book Strip: Garfield....what can I say? I don't follow the newspaper strips that much anymore, so I'll vote for an ol' favorite.

26. Best Non-Superhero Book, (romance, western, sci-fi...any category!): "Fall of Cthulhu", from Boom Studios! It's definently the best horror title I've read in years!! Runner's up: "Conan the Cimmerian" from Dark Horse, and "Scalped" from DC's Vertigo line!

Haven't had as much time as I'd like to hit the other categories, but I wanted to make sure I at least got in what votes I could for the main event:

1. Best Continuing Comic Book: No vote. Don't read any of the nominees, I'm afraid.
2. Best Writer: Ed Brubaker

3. Best Artist: Marcos Martin, though that's more from his older work.
4. Favorite Hero/Heroine: Booster Gold. Going with the underdog.
5. Favorite Villian: Darkseid. I did read the Fourth World Omnibus editions this year, after all.
6. Favorite Team: No vote. Don't read any of the titles of these teams.
7. Best Limited Series/Mini-Series: No vote, but I'll put the write-in for Atomic Robo: Dogs of War, though.

Might backfill the other categories if I get a minute tomorrow.

I think you need to recount the votes a bit, as Spider-Man is ahead of Superman, (though yes, Booster Gold is in the lead)...

THE COMMENTARY:

If the votes are to be believed, Action Comics had a stellar year, with it winning in the "Best Ongoing Comic" category, the "Most Improved" award, and with Geoff Johns winning "Best Writer".

The Justice League wins "Favorite Team" for a 2nd year in a row, (marking it as our first returning champion to win in a category a 2nd time)! Strangely enough, no one participates in any Justice League talkbacks here...this makes me question whether people here voted for the traditional concept of the Justice League, rather than the current title on the stands.

Moving on, for the 2nd year in a row, we couldn't manage to get more than 2 nominations in the "Best Mini-Series" category. That's a category which will need improvement next year.

Also, poor Batman: He's popular enough to get nominated, but can't score any votes in the actual voting thread.

In the lesser categories, it appears more people here are united around what the hate, rather than what they like, (although "Deadpool" appears to be a favorite). But Jeph Loeb, Greg Land, "Batman R.I.P." and "Ultimates Vol. 3" apparently all induced negative feelings among the fans here at Toon Zone.

Anyway, look for the first "Theme Week", (featuring "Action Comics") to begin this Monday!!!

So what do you think of the winners?!? Did the results turn out as you expected?!?
