I was wondering, is there anyplace on the internet that has a picture of a real repeating background (the kind where the beginning and end of the painting look similar so that it looks like the characters are running past the same objects over and over again)?

I've never seen one, even backgrounds I remember seeing repeat in cartoons show up in books and on websites as being the same size as non-moving/panning backgrounds. Is the "mystery" of the repeating background some sort of trade secret kept under wraps  :p

Probably. I do remember that we had a disscussion about a Droopy cartoon with repeating backgrounds on the VERY old board on bseen.com (at least I think that's where it was).

Other than that I don't know of any websites that feature pictures of repeating backgrounds from a cartoon.

I hope this helps.

Thanks, Pietro. I find it really wierd that I've never seen one in a book, or online. You'd think repeating backgrounds would be common. Hanna-Barbera cartoons used them all the time, as did a lot of theatrical cartoons (the Road Runners being a good example).

...must be a conspiracy.

There's a music video on CN that airs as part of the "Groovies" series, featuring a group called Soul Coughing. The song is titled "circles", and essentially makes fun of the whole repeating-background concept in Hanna-Barbera cartoons (Yogi, Top Cat, Flintstones, Quickdraw, etc.)
