I got a new DVD burner, and would like to burn some DVDs, I need to know which format is better, DVD - R or DVD + R, my DVD players plays both.

What I am trying to burn is Torrent video files, a mix of AVI and MKV files.

I don't think there's really that big of a difference, and what there is is probably only of interest to technophiles. The average user would probably be oblivious to them. I've used both, but I mostly use either TDK (http://www.amazon.com/TDK-4-7GB-DVD-R-100-Pack-Spindle/dp/B0009RKL5S/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1229121551&sr=8-1) or Memorex (http://www.amazon.com/Memorex-16X-DVD-R-100-Pack-Spindle/dp/B0009MX5R4/ref=pd_bbs_4?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1229121551&sr=8-4) DVD-R. Some just for making data back-ups, others for making full-on DVDs, and I've had no problems.

I've never seen differences between the + or -, i'm not sure why they have it different, but my DVD players play both unless they're in format that can't be understood. Instead of what format to buy, I do suggest you get the better quality dvds. The ones that I think good are Sony and TDK, the really cheap ones seem to freeze sometimes. If your burner and DVD player can use both, I don't think it really matters.

I have somewhat older DVD players, so I use DVD-R only. They're the most consistent in terms of readability across DVD manufacturers.

At home I buy whatever is cheaper or has a prettier case. :p

At work, I tell them to buy dvd-r because their Sony DVD+-RW drive occasionally has trouble with dvd+r (and their Nero refuses to use it). I mostly use Roxio at work, and only in a blue moon does something go wrong with a +r. And of course that happens when it's a rush job...

I use -RW generally, but I occasionally use -R too.

I never use RW, even though my DVD recorder supports it. Don't they wear out if you use them too much?
